Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I'm reading Shiver. I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would. The whole vampire and werewolf craze annoys me, so I was a little reluctant to pick it up. But I like the author's unique perspective on werewolves.

message 2102: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Elizabeth Kimberly, I'm glad to hear you're liking it, because I think I might pick it up next. I have it from the library, and God knows someone's probably got it on hold so I won't have it for very long. LO

message 2103: by Audrey (new)

Audrey | 4 comments Just finished Me Talk Pretty One Day, which was amusing but, for the most part, I felt like it didn't have much of a point. Just something to read to pass the time when there's nothing else around, I suppose?

message 2104: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (andrewjross) I just finished The Hunger Games and was kind of let down because I had such high expectations (perhaps unreasonably so). I still thought it was a good story and could definitely make for interesting discussion. I am about to start The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie which has also gotten good reviews recently.

message 2105: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I had a hard time deciding what to read today. I finally decided on Therese Desqueyroux because it's pretty short, so even if it's not fantastic, it won't be a lot of wasted time. I'm having a really hard time getting back into On the Road, which I had really wanted to read with the group. I still have a few weeks left before the end of the month though...

message 2106: by Jess (new)

Jess Andrew, I loved The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie! I hope you enjoy it too. I haven't yet read The Hunger Games, but that's good to know.

Li, I tried to read Perdido Street Station but gave up. I'm ashamed to say that I don't really regret it.

I'm currently reading the 2 1/2 Pillars of Wisdom Series by Alexander McCall Smith. I think it's adorable and hilarious.

message 2108: by ClaudiaSilva (new)

ClaudiaSilva I just finished reading The Hunger Games and now I'm reading Catching Fire and The Story of Edgar Sawtelle.

I agree with you I also had high expectations for The Hunger Games and I wasn't really impressed, the premise it's really interesting, but the writing wasn't up to it.

I loved that book. One of my favourite from Haruki Murakami.

ClaudiaSilva Tami wrote: "I started Anna K at lunch today, already 30 pages in. :) so much more to go."

I started reading that book and I was really into the story, but I stopped reading when I came to the long descriptive pages of russian economy and agriculture, and never picked it up again.I really have to finish it though because the story is really good.

message 2112: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Lauren (ashleyllauren) I just started into The Crystal Shard by RA Salvatore. My boyfriend adores the author, and I've read a few of his other books, but I just can't fall in love with his writing style like others have.

message 2113: by Steph (new)

Steph | 9 comments I'm currently reading Tell-All by Chuck Palahniuk. I just picked it up today and I'm actually really excited to get into it. I didn't read his last book, Pygmy, because the subject didn't seem interesting at all and I'd been really disappointed by the previous book Snuff.. but this looks like it might be somewhat getting back to his earlier books. I don't have any delusions that it'll be on par with Invisible Monsters, but if it at least gets back to a Rant level I'll be okay.

Please, Chuck, don't disappoint me again. ):

message 2114: by Tamara (new)

Tamara (tamaralee) I am about to finish Bed of Roses by Nora Roberts. I can't wait to start the 3rd one.

Frances, I had to put The Bell Jar down because it hit a little too close to home at one point. I did appreciate Plath's writing and how she managed to put me in such an uncomfortable position but I know that its going to be a while before I can finish that book...

I'm about 13% (thanks kindle) into Anna K and really liking it. I love the all the courting and ball stuff and I studied a lot of Marx in school so even the economy stuff is interesting (haven't gotten to any huge discourses yet though). Do we have a thread for this book?

Lianne (eclecticreading) | 71 comments R wrote: "Li, I tried to read Perdido Street Station but gave up. I'm ashamed to say that I don't really regret it."

I totally understand, I ended up skimming the remaining pages I had left. I was very disappointed with it, there was nothing that held my attention in the novel, everything was so diluted in jargon and stuff (I could go on, which I won't, lol).

I finished reading Charles Dickens's Little Dorrit and I absolutely enjoyed it =D

It was my first and it was great! Any suggestions for what to read from Murakami next?

message 2119: by Jacqueline (last edited Jun 13, 2010 07:52PM) (new)

Jacqueline Quackenbush Been on kind of a non-fiction kick since summer startedf and am currently read The Cosmos by Carl Sagan and I think it is absolutely amazing!Despite being a scientist by profession I truly think Sagan writes more beautifully than majority of the novelists I have read.

message 2120: by Kelly A. (new)

Kelly A. | 499 comments I started The Winthrop Woman but could only get about 180 pages in before I passed out from boredom. It's a library book, and I put a little note in towards the end that says "If you managed to get this far, I applaud you."
Life is too short to read boring books!

message 2121: by Sonja (new)

Sonja (crvena_sonja) | 78 comments Haha, Kelly, its great that you put a note in the library book. I'm sure that'll give the next person a chuckle, if they get that far...

Hahaha. I have that book but haven't read it yet. I think it will now be pushed farther down my to-read list in my head. Hahaha.

message 2123: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Williams (mrslaurenwilliams) | 425 comments I'm now reading The Commoner. Seems pretty good so far. Not really historical fiction though, the author pretty much borrows a few China royalty names and just makes a story. What the hey... I like a little fluff reading once in a while :)

message 2124: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I started Water for Elephants last night and it's pretty good so far. I'm glad I bought it.

message 2125: by Jess (new)

Jess I hope you like it, Lori! I unexpectedly liked it (though I despise circuses, which is why I delayed reading it for so long).

I finished Robert Alexander's The Kitchen Boy: A Novel of the Last Tsar this morning, and I'm about 60 pages into G. Willow Wilson's much awaited The Butterfly Mosque: A Young American Woman's Journey to Love and Islam, which I have been dying to read!

message 2126: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Jess, I'll admit that the main reason I picked it up is because I saw that Reese Witherspoon is in the film adaptation. I'm really bad about buying a book if I see that an actor I like really loves the book or is going to be in the film.

I am about 1/4 of the way through Anna K. I hoped to have read a whole bunch during the 8 hours I spent in the car this weekend, but I was getting sick each time I tried. Too bad.

A bunch of you have been reading or just finished books we have had in past group reads. Check out the discussions threads. I would love to here what you all have to say about the books.

message 2128: by Robb (new)

Robb (robbfarago) Just finished reading Tell-All and really enjoyed it. Now I am getting into some classics again with The Island of Dr. Moreau and Waiting for Godot

Allie :: literarilythrilling (literarilythrilling) I just completed The Other Boleyn Girl, which I enjoyed and am currently finishing up Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen and starting The Piano Teacher. I'm hoping to get my hands on Breakfast at Tiffany's soon (which I just realized was a group read!). I read through about half of it at Books-a-Million the other day and fell in love with it.

Kelly A. | 499 comments I just finished The Reader and am starting The Book Thief, which I've heard such good things about on here!

message 2132: by Sonja (new)

Sonja (crvena_sonja) | 78 comments I just finished Reading Lolita in Tehran which I really loved! I think its beautifully written and the classics are tied into Azar Nafisi's life story really really well. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to read about another culture or see certain books from a different perspective.

message 2133: by Hali (new)

Hali (hahlee) Since its the summer I'm reading fun books before next semester. I just finished The Book Thief which was so amazing! and Soldwhich I finished in an afternoon and was quite interesting. I'm going to the book store tomorrow to find some more quick summer reads :)

they are making a book out of Water for Elephants? Sometimes I feel like I like under a rock

message 2136: by Jess (new)

Jess I started Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games tonight and I'm already more than 100 pages in! It's so hard to put down, but I think I'm going to head to bed soon. So far it's really interesting though. Kind of like the movie The Island meets Children of Men meets 1984. Oh, dystopic fiction.

Oooh, you make it sound really interesting and like something I would like... Maybe that means I'll have to pick it up then! Let me know what you think when you've finished :)

message 2138: by Amelia (new)

Amelia (sun_doll) I'm just starting on The Hand that first Held Mine, because I am a very lucky girl and won a copy from the publisher...

message 2139: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Sonja, sorry it took so long to get back to you, I was away this weekend. I didn't like it because I just thought the way it was written was incredibly boring. The subject matter shouldn't have been, but I found it dull and uninteresting.

Don't feel bad. I didn't know until Sunday when I got onto People.com and saw the bit about Reese.

message 2141: by Jess (new)

Jess Jules, I just finished The Hunger Games! I loved it. I need to pick up Catching Fire (book two of the trilogy) ASAP.

I'm going to take a break from popular new fiction and re-read East of Eden. It's about time! It's been four years since I last read it.

message 2142: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 308 comments Just finished Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close! This book was awesome, and very meaningful! I think I'm going to start The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie now.

Kelly, I hope you enjoy The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie! Flavia de Luce is one of my favorite characters ever.

message 2144: by Dash (new)

Dash Hmm, I've been reading the Sword of Truth series from Terry Goodkind. I'm currently on Soul of the Fire. When I finish this series I am moving onto the Hunger Games books now that Mockingjay is so close to being released.

message 2145: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) I started reading Little Women and am really loving it so far. I had seen the movie about three years ago and ever since I'd wanted to read the book.

message 2146: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I finished reading Flyte (Septimus Heap, #2) by Angie Sage . I am now reading Physik (Septimus Heap, #3) by Angie Sage .

message 2147: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Elizabeth I'm finally reading Rapture of the Deep after having it since September. After it, I think I'm going to read an Agatha Christie... I love summer reading.

message 2148: by Heather (new)

Heather (andshewontsleep) I'm just about finished with The Keep which has been a quick and interesting read. I'm also reading Three To Get Deadly. I've been trying to read some lighter stuff to get myself prepared to participate in reading either Anna K or East of Eden... or perhaps both. That'd be nice.

message 2149: by Bex (new)

Bex (min_deore) I've embarked on a scary intense sort of reading binge in which I've finished 8 books in the last 10 days. This pace of reading is such a far cry from my typical reading style that its almost scary, but also incredibly exciting. First Westerfeld's Leviathan. Then Gaiman's Coraline and The Graveyard Book (that one joined in with my absolute favorites of all time). After that I absolutely inhaled Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which was so awesome I hate to have to leave the world behind.

Next up and actually starting this very moment is Pillars of the Earth. I'm hitting it head on while this binge is at its top strength and for the first time ever, I've suddenly become really excited about reading it.

message 2150: by Jess (new)

Jess That's awesome, Bex! It sounds like you've got a great variety of reading in, and I hope you continue! :D
