Anna Shumaker (annashu) Just finished In the Woods and the ending was disappointing but thanks to Allison's spoiler I was kinda expecting it so it was ok. My boss lent me The Little Giant of Aberdeen County so I think I'm gonna go start that.

message 752: by Anna (new)

Anna (heyannahey) | 67 comments Haha, my boyfriend is reading In the Woods now, and I kinda ruined the ending for him in the same way.

message 753: by Janet (new)

Janet I just started reading Angels & Demons since the movie comes out on Friday. My boyfriend and I listened to it on a road trip but we didn't finish and it was awhile ago...so I am just starting from the beginning. I am really excited because I really, really enjoyed The Da Vinci Code, both the book and movie! So I am excited for the book and movie of this too!

message 754: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I don't think it really ruins it all that much

message 755: by Sonja (new)

Sonja (crvena_sonja) | 78 comments I'm working my way through Lolita and, as others have said, its kinda hard to stomach. I now have Slaughterhouse Five, The House of Spirits, and The Hunger Games (which I won in a giveaway!) waiting for me...

message 756: by Ted (new)

Ted Magnuson (tedmagnuson) | 7 comments Jamie, You read 'Lolita.' While I haven't read that book, I have read "Reading Lolita in Tehran." An interesting spin on the Nabokov's storyline...

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Sonja wrote: "I'm working my way through Lolita and, as others have said, its kinda hard to stomach. I now have Slaughterhouse Five, The House of Spirits, and [book:The Hunger..."

I loved The Hunger Games! I hope you enjoy it. Its one of the best books I've read this year.

message 758: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Though I'm working on Love in the Time of Cholera, I'm about to start Lolita (I want to finish this book once and for all and it was May's group read for another group) and Count of Monte Cristo (which I'm reading with some friends from another group).

message 759: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I just picked up Stiff The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers again after putting it down months ago. It's interesting, but it's hard for me to sit down and read it for a long period of time - there's not really an engrossing story line. After this, I hope to pick up The Hours again and then start getting into all the various group reads: Slaughterhouse-Five, Lolita, I Capture the Castle.

message 760: by Allison (new)

Allison I finished Between Here and April and Living Dead in Dallas today.

Between Here and April was interesting. It was told from a different perspective and there was a different twist to the book than I had expected. I picked it up expecting it to read more like a mystery, so it was a bit of an adjustment when it wasn't, but I still enjoyed it.

Living Dead Until Dark was one of those books I just couldn't put down. I had finals today, so there were long breaks between tests, and I got a good chunk of this read. It's such a nice, fun and easy read.

message 761: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) | 71 comments Finished Heller's Catch-22 today (it was all right, pretty hilarious, although I think I might have to re-read it at some point because I kind of got lost at some points *blushes*).

I'm currently reading Andromeda Romano-Lax's The Spanish Bow, which is quite awesome from what I've read so far. I've also started reading Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray =)

message 762: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Li, Don't feel bad about getting lost in Catch-22. A lot of people do. However, most of them don't finish it. I'm glad you finished and liked it because it's one of my favorite books.

message 763: by [deleted user] (new)

I finished I Capture the Castle and am now reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. After that I will finish Ink Exchange...

message 764: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) Just finished Galapagos and loved it. I've said before that I usually don't like apocalypse books because the end is always the same, well I found one that breaks the rules.

message 765: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Annashu, you should check out Anthem by Ayn Rand. It breaks a mold as well.

message 766: by Allison (new)

Allison I finished Deadliest Catch Desperate Hours. It was a very quick read, especially since my fiancee and I are huge fans of the show.

Just started Booked to Die, and I'm only a few pages in, but I think that I'm going to enjoy this book and the whole series.

Just finished Lolita and now onto Slaughterhouse Five.

message 768: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I finished reading "Hunted" by P.C. and Kristin Cast, an hour ago. I am now reading "City of Glass" by Casandra Clare.

message 769: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I recently started Shattered Dreams My Life as a Polygamist's Wifeand am surprised by how good it is. I bought it because it was on sale and the subject interests me but for some reason I didn't except it to be so good.

message 770: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) Finished Stephen King's Just After Sunset and now I'm reading Rosamunde Pilcher's Flowers In The Rain & Other Stories...I'm enjoying it so far.

message 771: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I finished Love in the Time of Cholera yesterday after years of trying. After a lot of wasted time, I picked up The Rum Diary. I'm also slowly but surely reading Count of Monte Cristo for another book group. I can't wait to be able to start reading Summer Challenge books (I'm really feeling The Sun Also Rises) but there's just a little over a week left and I think we can all make it until then.

message 772: by Silvia (new)

Silvia (silverware) | 436 comments Lori I LOVE THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO! It is one of my favourite books. I finished We Need to Talk About Kevin, which was very long, semi engaging, and poorly linked the nature/nurture debate into the story. I am starting Sex and the City, but the reviews on here do not look good!!!

Did you like Love in the Time of Cholera? My history teacher a few years ago said it killed his love for Marquez, so I have been a little hesitant to read it.

I am currently reading The Dream of a Unified Field by Jorie Graham, and I love it! I just finished The Cave by Jose Saramago.

message 774: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Jessica, It was the first Marquez I read, aside from one short story, but I liked it. I think it appealed to me a lot because I was at my grandparents' house when I read the bulk of it and it was really nice to see firsthand and in the book people who have been in love for over 50 years. I'd recommend it, but I don't know how it compares to his other stuff.

message 775: by Liz (new)

Liz Since I last posted here I'vef insihed Got You Back, The Worst Witch, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Beowulf (reread). I'm working on The Aeneid and need to start rereading Romeo and Juliet.

Okay, thank you so much Lori! I'll have to pick it up from the library sometime then :)

message 777: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'm over halfway through The Rum Diary and I've realized what I like about it! It's a lot like Hemingway. The characters live modestly, drink a lot, and somehow get opportunities through meeting other drunk people. I wish I could give up my roots and possessions to be able to wander listlessly like that.

message 778: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) Lori, I think you've gotten it exactly right. I first started reading Hemingway because a guy came in to my store and told me that he was on vacation so he was going to try and be like Hemingway and be drunk the entire time to see if he would have some break through and become a great success. And I thought to myself this Hemingway fellow doesn't seem half bad I'll give him shot. Since then I've read a few books but mostly I think I want to take part in his shenanigans, and I got the same feeling out of The Rum Diary. Sorry this got so long but basically glad you are enjoying it.

message 779: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Annashu, I'm so glad to know that I'm not the only one who got that from Hemingway and The Rum Diary!

message 780: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished my Textbooks for finals, hahahaha, NOW hoever I am seriously reading/engaged in The Eye of the World (The Wheel of Time, Book 1) by Robert Jordan by Robert Jordan.

I've decided to finish the series, since I own a good number of the paper backs, and not re-read Harry Potter for the third year in a row. Haha.

message 781: by Tami (new)

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
but you have to re-read them right before the new movie comes out! :)

message 782: by Janet (new)

Janet I just finished Angels & Demons and really, really enjoyed it. Now I am going to start on Bitter is the New Black Confessions of a Condescending, Egomaniacal, Self-Centered Smartass, Or, Why You Should Never Carry A Prada Bag to the Unemployment Office. I have heard good things about it so I am excited to read it!

message 783: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I just finished Shattered Dreams My Life as a Polygamist's Wife and really liked it. The author had a great personality which made it so much better than expected. If I had been raised believing in, what she calls, "the principle" I feel like I may have acted similarly.
I also finished The Little Giant of Aberdeen County and really liked it as well. There is something about southern books that make them so easy to slip into.

message 784: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen I finally finished Cedric the Forester and started on Handle with Care by Jodi Picoult. I have to finish by Friday because I need to return it to the library!

message 785: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I just finished The Rum Diary. I'll probably waste the rest of today trying to decide what to read next...

message 786: by Daniel (new)

Daniel | 14 comments Starting The Trial by Franz Kafka.

Just finished Slaughterhouse Five and am now going to start I Love Everybody (and Other Atrocious Lies) True Tales of a Loudmouth Girl

message 788: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I just finished I Capture the Castle and started Mercy.

message 789: by Liz (new)

Liz I've recently finished The Worst Witch Strikes again and The Cherry Orchard. I'm planning on starting The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Vol. II tonight.

message 790: by Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner), The Founding Bookworm (new)

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 4407 comments Mod
Justine: How did you like I Capture the Castle? I just bought it recently.

message 791: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) I'm reading I Capture the Castle right now. I like it. It's a bit slow, but I think it works because it is the journal of the narrator, and I suppose that journals are very much like that--sometimes slow, sometimes fast. The narrator is very likeable, too, at least in my opinion.

message 792: by Spencer (new)

Spencer (spencerafreeman) I just finished reading Suite Scarlett. It was a cute YA quickie. Prior to that I read The Poisonwood Bible, which was amazing! It got so in depth, and the different point of views really added to the intricacies of the book.
Right now I just started A Thousand Splendid Suns which as been on my TBR list forever. When I saw they finally came out with a paperback version AND that it was on sale at Walmart, I took it as a sign! I'm only a few chapters in, but so far so good!

message 793: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I'm reading The Bridge Over the River Kwai A Novel. I haven't gotten very far into it yet because of night class, but it's only 150 pages long, so I think I'll finish this weekend, in time to start the summer challenge.

message 794: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) Jamie, I thought it was okay as a story about how seventeen year old girls have been the same for decades but I didn't love it.

message 795: by Lynnie (new)

Lynnie I'm almost halfway through The Sun Almost Rises. I was going to wait until June but ... I just couldn't. :]

I didn't expect to like it at all considering things friends have told me about it but I'm enjoying it pretty well! The only other thing I had attempted to read by Hemingway was Snows of Kilimanjaro. bleck. Didn't like it at all.

message 796: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (ashtheviking) I just finished The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie (aka the actor who play House), it was really good, laugh out loud funny/quirky. I could definitely here Laurie's voice as I was reading it. I guess just another facet of his awesomeness.

Hmm that's so interesting Ashley. I didn't know he wrote a book! I'll have to check it out!

message 798: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen I saw that and wanted to read it! I'm glad it was good.

I just finished Montana 1948. It was good; a quick read too.

Just finished I Love Everybody (and Other Atrocious Lies) True Tales of a Loudmouth Girl which was the most hilarious book I have ever read!

And now starting The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society for my first book of the Summer Challenge!

message 800: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I just finished The Women and was pretty frustrated because it was told backwards so the first 2 portions were pretty confusing because some of the characters aren't introduced until the end. After finishing it kinda makes sense that they couldn't start with the beginning but you have to read the whole book to understand that.
I'm thinking about starting Travels with Charley In Search of America for the summer challenge.
