Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments OK! I need help choosing which book to read next. I just recently bought several new books and I'm having a hard time choosing which one to read first. (I bet none of you have ever experienced this. lol) Which one do you all think?
1. Troy
2. The Book Thief
3. Ender's Shadow

message 552: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Kimberly, I haven't read any of those. But I've heard of The Book Thief and the people who've read it that I've talked to seemed to like it. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

message 553: by Anthony (new)

Anthony Finished reading Kingdom Coming The Rise of Christian Nationalism by Michelle Goldberg which was good until her final chapter and then she started to go a little overboard with her main thesis (not sure if making New York City its own state is the best of ideas...)

so far i'm on the italy part and really enjoying it..i'm with you so far..she has been able to articulate some things i have been feeling/have felt. i'm excited to read the other parts although i really am enjoying the Italy journey because it's making me reminisce about my time in Italy :) i'll let you know what i think of the rest of it.

message 555: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I just finished reading "Runaway" by Wendelin Van Draanen and I am now reading "Marked" by P.C.&Kristen Cast.

message 556: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) Just finishedTwilight, wasn't super impressed but interested enough to start the second book...quick, simple reads are necessary at times.

message 557: by Matthieu (last edited Mar 22, 2009 08:44PM) (new)

Matthieu | 130 comments I recently finished A Sorrow Beyond Dreams. I picked it up about two weeks ago, and finished it in about two days. It's quite short (96 pages), but rather dense. It's better to read it over a few days in order to really savour it. Then again, I can see how tempting it might be to finish it in one session.

message 558: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Ashley, I really like the House of Night series. I'm on the second one but haven't managed to find the time to get more than halfway... but I guess they get a lot better/more complicated as the series progresses (according to a friend of mine).

message 559: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) Janet, I finished Water for Elephants and thought it was great.
Lynn, what didn't you like about it?

message 560: by Veruca Salt (new)

Veruca Salt (mynameischrista) I am reading Marked right now. It's good for what it's about so far but I wouldn't say it's great!

message 561: by Keara (new)

Keara Clifford (KearaClifford) | 22 comments I love Jane Eyre. My mum is an english major and everytime she sees it in the bookcase she goes on a tangent about how great it is.

I'm reading Pretty Birds by Scott Simon for a human issues class and The Bachelorette Party by Karen McCullah Lutz for pleasure (she co wrote Legally Blonde).

message 562: by Greg (new)

Greg (greg1) Just started reading Candide, or Optimism. I'm 5 chapters in and I love it.

message 563: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) I've become obsessed. Just finished New Moon.

message 564: by Molly (new)

Molly (slinkyxo) | 153 comments just finished The Book Thief..now on to Jane Eyre.

message 565: by [deleted user] (last edited Mar 29, 2009 08:21AM) (new)

Jane Eyre is amazing!

My fellow feminist friend gave me a book called 'Cunt: a declaration of independence' to read. I read the first chapter of it this morning. Wow....I have never been so proud to be woman! My friend said the book changed her life, and I can see why.

message 566: by Michelle Kay (new)

Michelle Kay (dinosaur) | 56 comments Ive never been up for the popular hype on books. I usually like to take on my on choices on what to read. But this year i'm giving into all the hype series I never read. i've just finished up the Twilight Saga. And now, i'm giving it a go at V.C. Andrews, Flowers In The Attic.

message 567: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I am trudging through Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. So much of it is just...boring. The good parts make up for it, but it's very slow going. I have about 320 pages left and I really hope I can finish it tomorrow (even though the first 460 pages took me about 4 days).

message 568: by Anna (new)

Anna Shumaker (annashu) well I finished New Moon last night and startedBreaking Dawn. For the past week I've tried to read The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao but couldn't get into it (I think it was the language and footnotes) I think I'm going to give it another shot later but until then I've started Tipping the Velvet.

message 569: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) Michelle, V.C. Andrews is one of my favorite authors and Flowers in the Attic is an awesome book! I hope you like it!

Kayla, I am so glad you liked the Gargoyle. I really enjoyed the book and so far have only been able to convince one person to read it. :( Hopefully more will take my suggestions!

message 571: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Flowers in the Attic was a good book, but it disturbed me a little. But then again I was only 13 when I read it, I might have a different opinion now.

I finished When You Are Engulfed In Flames and have now started my giveaway win, The Gnostic Mystery.

So far, really like it. I am wondering if it would fit in the "other religion" category in the challenge. It is about the formation of the Catholic Church and another "rival" branch way back when. Kind of an Indiana Jones meets the Davinci Code. Well so far anyways......

Tami | 3103 comments Mod
Okay, so I will ask you what I have asked others that have said they read it. Did you read through the food list for the Christmas party or just skim it. So far, we are about half and half. I laughed clear through it.

message 574: by Spencer (new)

Spencer (spencerafreeman) I've always wanted to read a VC Andrews book... How are you liking it so far, Michelle?
Kelsey- have you read all the VC Andrews books? Do they all connect?

message 575: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) 48 more pages and I will be done with Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. It's been almost a week. It's really good, I just need to read something else.

message 576: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) Yes, V.C. Andrews books are pretty much all sort of disturbing in their own ways...

message 577: by Michelle Kay (new)

kelsey, i did very much like this book. and am setting out today to get the next in the series. i just couldnt put it down.

It was a very disturbing book, but it was captivating and compelling at the same time. I'm 21 now, and have just read it, so i doubt if you were to pick the book up again that it would give you any other impression.

Michelle Kay (dinosaur) | 56 comments Flowers in the Attic

I am speechless about this book. I'm not sure where my head is, or is supposed to be, after finishing it. But I can't wait to open the next part of the series.

I finished The Gnostic Mystery last night. I was pleasantly suprised. When a book is about religion it usually is a difficult long read, but this was a quick and easy. Not sure how I feel about the subject matter discussed, but found the story compelling and the characters likable enough.

Have a presentation due in 3 hours, so as of right now, I am currently reading nothing. Except some excerpts from reports for the presentation. :)

message 582: by Kelsey (last edited Mar 31, 2009 01:30PM) (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) I'm glad you liked it! =)
Make sure though, if you get into more V.C. Andrews, that you think twice about reading the most recent stuff. V.C. Andrews died awhile back, so her family has a ghostwriter writing under her name. The stuff he's been writing lately is complete crap.
These are the books she actually wrote:
-The Dollanganger series (Flowers in the Attic, Petals on the Wind, If There Be Thorns, Seeds of Yesterday, Garden of Shadows)
-My Sweet Audrina
-The Casteel series (Heaven, Dark Angel, Fallen Hearts, Gates of Paradise, Web of Dreams)

After that, the ghostwriter wrote The Cutler Series, The Landry Series, and the Logan Series, which are all pretty awesome too.

He also wrote the Hudson series, which wasn't too bad. Everything else that he wrote just went completely downhill. I don't know if he ran out of her original ideas/manuscripts or what, but the books after that have just been abysmal.

Haha sorry for this massive V.C. Andrews history lesson. I'm just a huge fan!

message 583: by Spencer (new)

Spencer (spencerafreeman) Lol, I'm glad you told me... I think your last post convinced me to read VC Andrews asap. And good looking out about the ghostwriter thing- I wouldn't have even known if you hadn't said anything :)

message 584: by Michelle Kay (new)

Michelle Kay (dinosaur) | 56 comments wow. a ghostwriter? is that even legal? hahah.
well thank you for the heads up.

I would say Twilight isn't anything super special. I read it maybe three years ago (WAY before it was famous) and considered it a cute vampire love story. But it didn't jump out at me. The ending leaves you pretty much hanging and I wasn't all that interested in reading the next book.

All in all, I wouldn't get too caught up in it, you can try the first one to see if you like the story line but don't expect it to be AMAZING because the movie and franchise EXPLODED.

message 586: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia (anastasia13) Anastasia wrote: "Soooooo.... I finished Twilight! AND I went out and bought New Moon before I was completely done w/Twilight so I would have it to read when I was done. After I finished Twilight last night I cracke..."

Ooh, I didn't read further down the post to see that you LOVED it, maybe my suggestion was misplaced, glad some story has you reading though. =)

message 587: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) Anastasia, I didn't even see your question about them all connecting! There are just a whole bunch of different series, so within the series, obviously they're connected. But the different series are completely different from one another. The only one that is a stand alone book is My Sweet Audrina (which is amazing). =)

message 588: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (readerandwriter) I finished reading "Marked" last night. I am now reading "Betrayed". I am addicted to the "House of Night" series.

message 589: by Molly (new)

Molly (slinkyxo) | 153 comments just started The Time Traveler's Wife for my first group read with this group! :)

message 590: by Justine (new)

Justine (paperbackheart) I just started Lamb The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal and The Time Traveler's Wife. I'm doing The Time Traveler's Wife as an audiobook - it's pretty good so far, but the lady reader pronounces library like li-berry.

message 591: by Greg (new)

Greg (greg1) Finishing up Candide, or Optimismin my western lit class.

Just started The Firm as my personal read.

message 592: by Keara (new)

Keara Clifford (KearaClifford) | 22 comments i just finished Revolutionary Road by Richard Yates and actually really liked it. It took awhile to get into it but it had a very good ending.

message 593: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Justine, that would bother me so much haha.

message 594: by Spencer (new)

Spencer (spencerafreeman) I'm reading Nefertiti A Novel. Only on chapter 8, but it's really captured my attention so far.

message 595: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments I am reading Fablehaven Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary. I've really enjoyed the series, and this one is really good so far.

message 597: by Michelle Kay (new)

Michelle Kay (dinosaur) | 56 comments just finished Fight Club A Novel

And now I'm halfway through Midnight Sun

message 598: by Janet (new)

Janet I finished The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. It was ok. Everyone kept saying it was really good but I thought it was ok. It kept me interested but I did think it was going to be a lot better! Oh well!
Now I started The Bean Trees. My friend gave it to me to read, so we'll see!

message 599: by Tahleen (new)

Tahleen Janet, I loved The Bean Trees! I love Barbara Kingsolver, especially the ones that are set in the southwest, there is just something about that region that I love.

I'm reading The Canon A Whirligig Tour of the Beautiful Basics of Science for class. I love Natalie Angier, she's a great writer, but I don't know how far I'd get in this book if it weren't for class since it's about science haha.

message 600: by Liz (new)

Liz I'm about halfway through a novel called Beyond Ragnarok right now--the characters are juvenile and the fact that the plot actually moves is what has kept me reading it (that, and I hate quitting partway through a book!).
