Janet, is that for a special education class you're taking? For my major we're required to take Teaching Children with Exceptionalities (I would say it's Intro Special Ed but there's actually another class called Intro Special Ed. So I'm not sure what the difference is. haha) and we had to do a book report and my second cousin read Curious Incident for hers. She really liked it.
I finished Witch of Portobello. It was amazing. I wrote a review of it, so check that out.Now I've moved onto: Journals (my read during lunch book), Lolita (my read before my first class book), and The Story of Edgar Sawtelle A Novel (my read in bed at night book). I'm really liking all three of them so far.
Yeah I like it so far. Lynn, I am a Special Ed. major so yeah, it's for a special ed class. Haha. Are you a gen. ed. major because that sounds like the class they would make you take! YAY Sped!!
I just finished "The Wednesday Letters". It was a very quick read... read the book in like 3 days. I am now reading "Forever" by Judy Blume.
I'm a speech pathology major but we have to take several classes that ed majors have to take too. Like Exceptional Children and Developmental Psych. Excep Child is the only ed class we're required to take, but I've also taken Children's Lit just for fun and I'm always hanging out in the ed dept. Some of the students even think I am an ed major! haha.I really loved taking Exceptional Children. Our profesor was the BEST! She loves special ed. You can just tell by all her actions/words/etc. For each section we had to do an "experience" so it was like we had the disability/disorder. I remember for the MR one I was about to cry I was so frustrated. And for LD, I just gave up halfway through. I just couldn't do it anymore. It was too hard. We had to write a paragraph about each experience and I admitted to giving up in the LD one b/c I just couldn't take it anymore. I though she would be upset, but when I got the paper back she had written things like "EXACTLY!!" and I was like "Oh wow. I understand now!" The class was a huge learning experience and a lesson in compassion and patience!
I finished "Forever..." by Judy Blume and I didn't like it at all. I am now reading "Dinner with Anna Karenina" by Gloria Goldreich
I'm currently reading Watchmen by Alan Moore in prep for the movie. It's pretty good so far, very multi-layered and the art definately adds to it. I'm normally the type who skims over the pictures and just reads the words.
I started (for real this time) reading The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman for my own little book group :) It's really good so far, very different and original and I kinda wish I had written it haha. Plus there are really creepy illustrations that are awesome.
Just finished Watchmen, so so good. Now I am onto Bright Lights, Big Ass A Self-Indulgent, Surly, Ex-Sorority Girl's Guide to Why it Often Sucks in the City, or Who are These Idiots and Why Do They All Live Next Door to Me? which I definately would never have ordered if not for this group and someone's glowing recommendation. I forget who, but I'm psyched to read it.
April and Lynn- I bought the first one of that series and still have yet to read it but I am really excited!!
Finished Starvation Heights A True Story of Murder and Malice in the Woods of the Pacific Northwest and was a little let down. Picked up Franny and Zooey because i wasn't quite ready to go to sleep and didn't feel like going downstairs to get my other book.
I just started The Reader by Bernhard Schlink. I picked it up at the library this morning (My name finally came up on the reserve list... it's been out of the library nonstop since the movie first came out!) I'm already almost halfway. It's pretty good. I don't think the writing itself is amazing (but it's also just a translation so I should take that into account) but the story is very intriguing.
Lynn, I bought a copy yesterday and I plan on reading it this week. I heard it's a really quick read.
I just finished "The Reader" by Bernhard Schlink and I am now reading "Runaway" by Wendelin Van Draanen.
I finished The Graduate last night. The movie is almost exactly like the book. I had a hard time dealing with the questions that didn't have question marks. He'd write, "What." Anyway, it's a quick read if you're at all interested.
Just finished The Inferno for my western lit. class. Currently reading Lone Survivor The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10 while I'm on spring break.
just finished Love Me by one of my very fav authors - Garrison Keillor for the challenge (5 points; 85 total)I have to finish Dorothy Day's autobio The Long Loneliness in time for class on Tuesday. Hopefully I'll finish it this weekend
Just finished Zola's Germinal (BRILLIANT!) and Brautigan's In Watermelon Sugar (HORRENDOUS!). Finished them a few days ago, actually.
Currently plowing through Rushdie's Midnight's Children but I don't think it's working out. I might just pick up this month's selection if that's the case.

How's Lolita for you? That's one of my absolute favorites.

I buckled down today and finished Franny and Zooey(hated it but can now tell people I read it all the way through)When You Are Engulfed in Flames (not great but I did surprise myself by laughing out loud a few times) The Reader (turns out I read this book several years ago and forgot...it was still good the 2nd time though)...might start Twilight next
Aww Anna that's too bad. I adored Franny and Zooey! I've been meaning to read The Reader before I see the movie, but is it incredibly sad? I don't know if I can handle incredibly sad right now...
I didn't think it was incredibly sad. Yes it was a sad subject, but, in my opinion, it was written in such a detached way that I didn't feel really strong emotions about anyone.
A Great Idea at the Time The Rise, Fall, and Curious Afterlife of the Great Books by Alex Beam Just finished reading this book:
Easy read and definitely interesting about the Great Books of the Western World and how they were created and became popular for a short while. A book about why people judge what is worthy of being in the canon and why. Thought it was funny was that these books were marketed towards the middle-class and they were basically unreadable (9 pont font, double columns on a page with no footnotes). I definitely learned about new educational theories and about little St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland (and Santa Fe, New Mexico) and how they only teach from the humanities/Great Books.
Currently reading:
Kingdom Coming The Rise of Christian Nationalism by Michelle Goldberg
and The Brethren Inside the Supreme Court by Bob Woodward
Audrey, I am only about half way through it, and while the writing is great, I really don't like any of the characters, so I am having a difficult time wanting to finish it.
Anna, I didn't hate Franny and Zooey but I am far from liking it. I really didn't understand anyones attraction to that book. What a bore. I am thinking that maybe I will pick it up again. I was reading it during my busy time at work and school, so maybe I just rushed through or didn't get everything out of it I should have.

I just finished Alice Waters and Chez Panisse The Romantic, Impractical, Often Eccentric, Ultimately Brilliant Making of a Food Revolution and loved it. I did some research about edible schoolyard a few years ago and had forgotten about her involvement. I might have a new idol. Also I told myself I couldn't buy her cookbook until I finished her book and I just got paid so its present time...again.
Chez Panisse? That's the super-pricey restaurant some blocks thataway (westish)? I've never been (because ~$80 per person is not something I can do), but I'd like to try before I go.I don't think she works there anymore, and I've heard it's overrated, though. : /
gosh...hadn't realized i'd been mia for so long.stupid school..
when i'm not reading books for my ya lit class, i've been plugging through Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. it's slow going, but i really enjoy the story.
i've also recently picked up I am Scout The Biography of Harper Lee and Mockingbird A Portrait of Harper Lee. the author is coming to my library in april for a book signing and talk. i'm so excited because harper lee is one of my all time favorite authors (although she only wrote one book) and is such an interesting person. i am scout is the ya version of mockingbird, but both are good thus far.
It is not so much the restaurant that interests me but more Alice Waters' commitment to sustainability and local/seasonal foods.
I'm reading Eat, Pray, Love One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia and Wasted A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia..liking both so far!
Man I've heard a lot about Eat, Pray, Love. I kinda want to read it to see what the fuss is all about.
I'm reading Lost Boys A Novel. I love Orson Scott Card, and this book is really good so far. Anyone else read it?
Just finished The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. SOOOOOO good! Love that Sherman Alexie!!I guess I should finish The Long Loneliness
Lynn I've been wanting to read that for a really long time! Hopefully I'll get a chance soon, but I have the feeling I won't get to it until after I graduate :/
It was a really quick read. I read over half of it in one night. So if you ever have a few free nights, you could finish it quickly.
alright I've given in and started Twilight, so far it's okay don't really see what the fuss is about yet though.
For me Twilight is a fun read, the author has a great sense of humor, and I like her writing style. However I don't understand why everyone has gone crazy over it...
I just finished The Book of Lost Things.. I was actually a bit disappointed with it for some reason. I think my expectations were too high and I wasn't really in the right frame of mind this week to read a fairy tale. I've also been trying to read The Host A Novel for a few weeks and can't get into it. I think I'm in a reading funk. I'm about to start A Great and Terrible Beauty now.
Heather, The Host is hard to get into. I think I read 100 or more pages before I really got into it. After that I loved it.
heather- so sorry you were disappointed in the book of lost things. it's one of my very favorite books ever. but then again, i'm always ready to read a fairy tale (if it's twisted, it's better)- their one of my favorite genres.jamie- i read eat, pray, love a while ago. i enjoyed it and hated it at the same time. i loved the first two journeys, and she put into words some things that had really been on my heart. however, i was greatly greatly disappointed in the last journey. possibly because the first 2 were exactly what i needed to hear, so i had very high expectations for the last part, and it just didn't tell me what i guess i was needing for closure. i think i would have enjoyed the whole thing, had i not been in a place in my life where some of the things that she dealt with were weighing heavily upon me too.
Finally finished Jessica Z. I liked it. I didn't love it but it kept me interested. Now I need to catch up on reading for school!Justine- I really want to read Water for Elephants let me know how it turns out!!
Allison, I agree. I loved the first part of the book (Italy and India) but Indonesia was just like "whaaaat??" but overall I really did like it. If I re-read it, I might just skip the last partWater for Elepants on the other hand... I haaaated!
But I am loving Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day! It's cutesy and fun
