Pat () | -245 comments Just finished Sky Dragons (Pern, #24) by Anne McCaffrey

The last book Anne McCaffrey wrote with her son Todd before her death in 2011. I am a big fan of hers, so yes, I enjoyed it. It was not the best she had written, but it was of the dragons of Pern 'nough said. A whole lot of people are not going to like this book. Todd has a great act to follow. He is not his mother but is trying to keep Pern alive. He has a long way to go. I do hope he makes it.

Tim | 8539 comments Todd McCaffrey was interviewed for the Sword & Laser podcast a couple of months ago (S&L is another majorly active group here on Goodreads as well as the Geek & Sundry channel on YouTube). Anyhow it's an interesting listen: http://www.swordandlaser.com/home/201...

Pat () | -245 comments I went and listened. It was not what I expected but it was interesting. When he asked her to describe a Pern dragon she was stuck, didn't have a clue. Very revealing.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I have a book that was done with anne mccaffrey which has loads ove drawings of characters, dragons and places in Pern. I will try and see if i can find it when I get gethome, its really fascinating to see how she pictured them.

message 3168: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I thought the writing was good in them all Pat, but in any book of stories you prefer some to others. All together, I thought it was a good light read.

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I read Tiff's Short Erotic Tales Vol 1 and finished it, I recommend it to anyone who hasn't read erotica before and is interested in giving it a try. It's not at all what I expected having never read erotica before but since it's our Mel I thought I'd give it a try.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12620 comments July was a very slow month between being busy and beta reading, August has started very well as I have read a book in a day (had to do a 4 hour train journey for work!!) - The Love of the Dead by Craig Saunders. I am only reading indie authors on Good REads this month, looking forward to that, the ones I have picked seem very good.

message 3173: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Lawston (andrewlawston) | 1774 comments Finished Artemis Fowl on the train home last night, and read the first few pages of The Dance Of The Voodoo Handbag as I'd not realised I had wi-fi turned off and a bunch of books queued up for download.

But by this morning, I was bang up to date and started on Pompomberry House!

Black Prism was a five in my book. Great characters, awesome magic, some nice political intrigue, and plot twists done well.

Nigel Bird (nigelbird) | 167 comments Bullets and Fire opens with the first person narrator relaxing in a bar after attacking a twelve year-old girl and breaking her nose. He might not be that proud of it, but it’s what he had to do to prove his worth as he aims to achieve initiation into one of the local gangs.
Job done, he asks the men with him about their own initiation. For me, the questions are a little bold for the narrator to be pushing at such an early stage and the lips of the gang members are a little too loose given their responsibilities.
Passing his test, the protagonist is taken along to the old bowling alley, not the gang’s hangout. It’s a grim, primitive space, vividly described and bordering on the setting for a horror piece. The setting shows Lansdale’s work off well.
From this point, the story unfolds with 3D smellivision and non-stop action.
It’s a good story, but not a great one. There are many strengths to the piece as you might expect, but for me it lacks a little something – the dark edge of humour perhaps, a little more of a test for the main character or a little more deviation or some deviation from the path upon which things start.
Good work. Solid work. Worth reading.

I liked the sound of this one - but it is far too expensive as a kindle. So, sadly, will have to pass.

I finished Devoted Sisters last night, just before bed time, which was not good! I can't say that I enjoyed reading it but did find it gripping and compelling reading. I've given it five stars based on it's quality.

I also finised reading Summer Shorts which was very good. There's a prequel to Pompomberry House in there and a story from David Wailing which I loved - took me back to my childhood.

Now I've just started Willie Wit's new book and really enjoying it so far!A Brave New Hope
