Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Scumble. I wonder what the rest was. Pretty sure it wasn't bright red fizzy chemical water.

I reckon you've got Tizer there.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Not any more. And half the bottle of Mickey Finn has somehow vanished as well.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Vampire juice!

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments They would reject it as being too red.

Philip Whiteland | 3394 comments Is it like Irn Bru?

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments It doesn't taste of iron girders. And its much more red. I can't tell you how red it is.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Irn Bru is rust coloured, obvs!

I suppose it ought to be. Perhaps Liquid Rust could be the new version ;-)

Forgot to tell you all the result of yesterday's competition. It was won by our very own Gingerlily who correctly identified that Burton-born Joe Jackson was the singer/songwriter of 'Steppin' Out' and 'Is She Really Going Out With Him?' Well done, GL, who wins a free advance copy of Giving a Bull Stawberries The 'nostalgedy' collection Book 4

There'll be a new competition at the weekend.

message 2167: by Philip (new)

Philip Whiteland | 3394 comments As tomorrow marks just one week to go to the publication of Giving a Bull Stawberries The 'nostalgedy' collection Book 4, there will be one last chance to win a free advance copy. Watch out for the competition.

message 2168: by Philip (new)

Philip Whiteland | 3394 comments This time next week, I'll be launching the new book Giving a Bull Stawberries The 'nostalgedy' collection Book 4. In the meantime, here is your last chance to win a free advance copy. I'm going to give you several clues during the course of the day and we'll see how soon someone can come up with the right answer.

Born in Burton upon Trent on 1st November, 1934 as one of twins, this character actor was the son of our local District Nurse. He appeared in many of the popular TV series in the 1960s and 1970s, including The Saint and The Avengers.

That's your first clue. If anyone gets it on that basis alone, they can choose any of my other books as a prize as well! PM the answer to me as soon as you think you know it :-)

message 2169: by Philip (new)

Philip Whiteland | 3394 comments Second clue for the competition:

His twin sister's name is Shirley. He has three children, all of whom work in broadcasting in one form or another. One of his daughters is now more famous than he is for her dramatic roles. He is probably best known for playing Albert Frazer in 24 episodes of the original 1970's Onedin Line.

message 2170: by Philip (new)

Philip Whiteland | 3394 comments Hmmm, not exactly killed in the rush for this one. Let's see if the third clue swings it:

His children are Abigail and Samantha, both actresses, and Matthew, who is a film and TV journalist. Samantha is, arguably, the most famous of the three, appearing as Miss Moneypenny in the Pierce Brosnan Bond films.

message 2171: by Philip (new)

Philip Whiteland | 3394 comments Fourth clue then:

His daughter, Samantha, was also Auntie Angela in the hit comedy series 'Outnumbered' and she also played Lady Rosaumund Painswick in Downton Abbey.

message 2172: by Philip (new)

Philip Whiteland | 3394 comments Wow, who would believe it! No-one here watches, Downton, Outnumbered or Bond films ;-)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I would have tried, but I already won.

Philip Whiteland | 3394 comments Gingerlily - Elephant Philosopher wrote: "I would have tried, but I already won."

You certainly have, GL. Perhaps you could give someone else a hint ;-)

message 2175: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Got me bang to rights. Don't watch any of the above.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Hmmm... well he is on first name terms with you.

Philip Whiteland | 3394 comments Kath wrote: "Got me bang to rights. Don't watch any of the above."

Regrettably, neither do I but I was hoping their popularity might help ;-)

Yep, he sure is. His mum lived around the corner from us and was a very well respected lady in the town.

Have you entered your cover in Joel Friedlander's cover comp? Lots of useful comments on other writer's books. I've entered mine and had some useful advice.

Thanks Jan. No, I haven't but will do so after it has been published at the end of this week.

Philip Whiteland | 3394 comments There's still chance to win a FREE advance copy of Giving a Bull Stawberries The 'nostalgedy' collection Book 4. Just PM me with the name of the famous Burtonian we're looking for.

Here are all the clues to date:

Born in Burton upon Trent on 1st November, 1934 as one of twins, this character actor was the son of our local District Nurse. He appeared in many of the popular TV series in the 1960s and 1970s, including The Saint and The Avengers.

A quick trip to Google should get you the answer, I should think ;-)

Philip Whiteland | 3394 comments Just a reminder that the publication of Giving a Bull Stawberries The 'nostalgedy' collection Book 4 on Saturday will coincide with the un-publication (if there is such a word) of Jambalaya. If you've ever thought about reading Jambalaya, you'll need to get your copy before Saturday. This is a public announcement on behalf of The Society for Books that People Won't Touch With A Bargepole ;-)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I read Jambalaya. Much sniggering and silly giggling ensued.

message 2184: by Philip (new)

Philip Whiteland | 3394 comments Thanks GL. Quite cheered me up :-)

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Glad to hear it.

Philip Whiteland | 3394 comments On tenterhooks about tomorrow!

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I would suggest you get down off the hooks before they damage something you need....

But good luck with the book :) Hope it sells well.

message 2188: by Philip (new)

Philip Whiteland | 3394 comments Thanks GL. Have you noticed how many people say 'tenderhooks'?

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Well I used to, as i never saw it written down, just heard it spoken, and most people don't emphasize the 't'. I was quite surprised when i found out the correct spelling.

message 2190: by Philip (new)

Philip Whiteland | 3394 comments I had a similar problem with 'misled' I'd only ever read it and assumed it was pronounced 'mizzled'.

message 2191: by Philip (new)

Philip Whiteland | 3394 comments The answer to the competition, by the way, was:

Philip Bond

GL knew it but she had already won a previous competition and there's a limit to how many copies of Giving a Bull Stawberries The 'nostalgedy' collection Book 4 by Philip Whiteland anybody needs ;-)

message 2192: by Philip (new)

Philip Whiteland | 3394 comments BTW, I've made a conscious decision that I'm not going to do the freebie thing with any of my books any more. I just can't see that it ever brings any benefits and I very much doubt whether many of them ever are read. Any thoughts?

message 2193: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I've never done a freebie with mine. Of course, I still don't know whether anyone reads them!

message 2194: by Philip (new)

Philip Whiteland | 3394 comments Kath wrote: "I've never done a freebie with mine. Of course, I still don't know whether anyone reads them!"

I've parted with hundreds of copies for free and it never seems to make a blind bit of difference to the sales of the others, as you would hope it might. I agree that you never really know if anyone, apart from those who leave a review, have actually read your books but it seems to me that making a definite commitment to buy something, even if it is only 99p, makes it more likely you will read it at some point.

You would think so, but apparently most readers can't remember which ones were free when they check their TBR list.

Possibly, but if they're anything like me, Jan, they probably have a batch of books that they've downloaded which never get off the bottom of the list because they're always being replaced by books you have bought because you really want to read them. I call them my 'guilt pile' because I know I ought to either give them a chance or delete them, but I can't bring myself to do either ;-)

Good luck. He gives some useful advice. I usually enter the comp with my e-book covers before I go into print so that I can make any suggested changes.

Philip Whiteland | 3394 comments I've been having a bit of a play with some of the features on Goodreads (you can tell what a busy afternoon I'm having, can't you?)

I now have answered all of the standard questions on the Ask the Author thing and I've linked my You Tube 'video' to my profile - have a butchers' if you get a moment :-)
