Primero | 3 comments I gave up on The Abhorsen Chronicles (The Abhorsen Trilogy, #1-3) by Garth Nix The first book, Sybriel, got 4.7 out of 5 on Amazon. So I bought an omnibus version hoping this trilogy must be really good. It turns out I was wrong. I enjoyed the prologue and about the first 5 pages. After that it was boring I can't concentrate on the book.

Laraine (lala26) | 121 comments The most recent book I gave up on was The Demon Trapper's Daughter (The Demon Trappers #1) by Jana Oliver . I liked the premise but I somehow lost interest in it.

Daria (dariadeptula) Ottilie wrote: "I'm picky with sci-fi books, movies I'm less so. I can handle sappier books then I can with movies."

I'm the opposite. I can handle emotional movies (to a certain extent), but I can't stand reading emotional books.

message 54: by Ottilie (new)

Ottilie (ottilie_weber) | 484 comments I can handle the books to a point, there needs to be something else going on. Romance can't be the only plot. That make sense?

message 55: by Tracy T. (new)

Tracy T. I very rarely give up on a book or series, even if I loathe them and wish I had given up on them. The only 3 I can think of right now are Blue Bloods, The Mortal Instruments, and Twilight.

I've also given up on epic fantasy, like The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett , and books that really disturb me, like Living Dead Girl by Elizabeth Scott .

message 56: by Monique (new)

Monique (moniqueurbanisedgeek) I gave up on Shiver. Wow. Boring and melodramatic and just slightly icky in that a girl is on love with a wolf before she knows he is human. Do not stone me, please.

message 57: by [deleted user] (new)

Gardens of the Moon (Malazan Book of the Fallen, #1) by Steven Erikson The Fox Woman by Kij Johnson and Wild Magic (Immortals, #1) by Tamora Pierce ...

as for series ive given up on the house of night books Marked / Betrayed / Chosen / Untamed (House of Night, #1-4) by P.C. Cast

It is a slow mover. No stoning here.

message 59: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) It was slow. Oddly enough, thats what I liked about it.

I could see that too!

Oh yes! A book HAS to have more to it than "Oh, which boy do I like better?" or whatever.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Got it. Need to write book : Which girl do I like better?

:p

message 63: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I'd like that book. I can't think of one where the triangle is two girls and one boy.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Simon had a brief one in MI, but it wasn't a big part of the plot either.

Ooo, I'd like to see a book with that.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I loved the Abhorsen series!

I think someone needs to teach me HOW to give up on books. Even when I don't like them (Hello Shiver I'm looking at you) and want to poke myself in the eye to escape I keep reading. It's like I need to put a check mark next to the book good or bad. My friend Ben told me that just putting down a bad book and not finishing it is a wonderful "freeing" feeling. I want that!

However if I don't like book 1 I won't continue with the series because I'm not that bad. But I feel if I start something I have to finish it.

In related news my parents always did tell me when we signed up for sports/clubs/plays that if we started it we had to see it through until the end of the season. This might be their fault.

hahaha Yeah that I can't handle that!

message 69: by Rachelle (new)

Rachelle (awaken80) I shed tears at the drop of a hat, Ottilie, so that might explain it lol! And I agree that a book generally has to be about more than a love story for me to consider it a great book, but I always like a good love story in a book!

message 70: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Peep I think we need to start a thread "Books I WISH I would have given up on". I can name several!

message 71: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Oh me too! Two right now!

message 72: by Rachelle (new)

Rachelle (awaken80) I can definitely think of some too! It's a shame you have to read books all the way through before you know for sure that they really DON'T get any better!

message 73: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) I wish I would have given up on Divergent by Veronica Roth while I was ahead!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Oh yeah? I heard a few good things about that one. What didn't you like about it?

message 75: by Angela (new)

Angela (angelasharp) | 4 comments I loved Divergent! It kept my attention and I thought it was quite action packed. The character development was exactly suprising but it was entertaining. Do you not care for Dystopian?

message 76: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 2 comments I just joined this group because of this discussion. I always felt guilty when I wanted to give up n books, or I felt stupid when I read them and they never got better. I felt that about Blood and Chocolate. It was bad and had no heart. I agree that many series books feel like they are written in a factory. It's rare when a series has many books and that they stay same quality

Just from reading your posts I think we think very much alike. I also can't really handle a book just about romance but I can watch a movie no problem.

May I recommend a book to you. I think you'll like. It's my number ! for this year so far. the website has very good selection of quotes from the book. I think this one would speak to you. www.pulseofheroes.com

Ack, I hated Blood and Chocolate! Talk about horrid, unlikeable characters (not to mention one of the worst MCs I've ever read)! I felt so annoyed that I'd wasted my time on it.

VA #1 was ok-ish if you ask me, the second was a lot better, but the third blew my mind, i couldn't put down the book while reading last 150 pages(and every book is kinda boring to me, but not this one).....blue bloods #3 was better than 1&2 but 4&5 are great....I think you should give VA another try

(and Stacia) I had more than a few issues with Divergent. I know that everyone else liked it and I also wanted to like it. It was just too much. Tris talked and thought like a robot (at least for the first half), the violence was just there for the sake of shock value, and the ending.... ugh the ending! Ugh!!

I could definitely see this being made by Asylum Films.

I love Dystopian by the way, just not this book.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Anna wrote: "VA #1 was ok-ish if you ask me, the second was a lot better, but the third blew my mind..."

We're on the same page here. Book 1 just barely got 3 stars from me (more like a 2.5). Book 2 was a lot better than the first but still not "wow", but books 3 through 6 were all incredible. The feeder thing really isn't touched upon much past book 1 if that's the thing that was throwing people off. I think it was only used in book 1 to show Lissa's dependency on Rose.

I almost debated quitting out after book 1 because I didn't see what all the hype was about. The world building was too much and sort of dull, but I found that this is just the author's style. Every single series of her has a tedious book 1, but if you can move on to the second book it gets so much better. Outside of Moning's Fever series, this is another author who has such a great talent for writing a long and engaging story arc.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Peep (Pop! Pop!) wrote: "(and Stacia) I had more than a few issues with Divergent. I know that everyone else liked it and I also wanted to like it. It was just too much...."

Well thanks for being honest about it. I went and checked my friends list (I belong to various genre groups so my list is pretty varied in taste preference) and it seems like most people gave it at least 4 stars, so I'll still give it a shot. Maybe I'll like it, maybe I'll hate it, but it's nice to get varied opinions, even from those who don't like the book.

I think I've been in a dystopia rut lately. The past few I've read have just been okay, so I've backed off from them for a while and have been hoping to find one that blows me away.

message 83: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (last edited May 28, 2011 01:55PM) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Oh, I didn't mean to imply you should skip it! You should definitely read it. And like Heidi, you shouldn't listen to me. I am more likely to rate books lower than most people. I have high reading standards. I'm like the old timey queen (reader) that sits on her throne and shouts at the jester (book) to "make me laugh!"... Or something like that.

A lot of people liked it. It's rated really high on here. I really don't forsee many people agreeing with me (even though I am 100% right!). Haha.

message 84: by Heidi (new)

Heidi bwhahaha "make me laugh"! I am guessing I will be of a similar opinion to you Peep, but will give it a try.

message 89: by Paula (new)

Paula Williams (daystealer) | 43 comments I study YA writers to write well myself so I try to read all books, whether I like them or not, but a few I couldn't continue. One I can remember in particular is Intertwined (Intertwined, #1) by Gena Showalter and I'm afraid The Iron King (Iron Fey, #1) by Julie Kagawa might be added soon. It's a roller coaster for me--like it, hate it, like it, and now I hate it and don't know if I'll pick it up again. Usually I plow through, even if I skip a few chapters to get to the end, like I did with Marked (House of Night, #1) by P.C. Cast

message 93: by Kayla (new)

Kayla (kaylawrites89) | 352 comments Okay, I gave up on several books because they just bored me to death or I couldn't get into them.

Even though I loved all the parts about H.H Holmes, I couldn't finish The Devil in the White City Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson

Nor could I get into or finish Pretties (Uglies, #2) by Scott Westerfeld and Everlost (Skinjacker, #1) by Neal Shusterman

I forced myself to read Uglies (Uglies, #1) by Scott Westerfeld , but I couldn't get into Pretties and just stopped reading it all together.

message 94: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited May 30, 2011 11:39PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I read both Uglies and Pretties and stopped there. Neither book was bad, but both had a lot of dry, overly descriptive parts. By the end of Pretties, I realized I didn't care to know how the whole thing was going to end. It may be one of the only series I've ever read 2 books and stopped. Usually it's one book and done, or I keep going to the end.

Now, I haven't read Everlost, but that one I'm curious about because I like Shusterman's writing style far better than Westerfield's. Unwind was a great book by him.

message 95: by Paula (new)

Paula Williams (daystealer) | 43 comments Everlost is sitting on my shelf waiting to tickle my fancy. I'm hoping it's good enough to finish. Thanks for sharing op on Shusterman's style, although I like Westerfeld's.

Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer"

I love the Artemis Fowl books, but I had to readjust to the almost Victorian omniscient point of view (most contemporary YA is first person, or a close third person point of view, meaning you identify closely with the character and see things mostly through their eyes). That omniscient distance may be what is putting you off.

message 98: by Kayla (new)

Kayla (kaylawrites89) | 352 comments The books I absolutely loved by Westerfeld were his Peeps series. I just couldn't get into the Uglies series. I actually forced myself to read Uglies, just to come out disappointed with it, which I hated.

message 99: by Kelly (new)

Kelly McClymer (kellymcclymer) | 18 comments Oh I *loved* Uglies. What a concept -- if we could all look perfect, life still wouldn't be perfect. Maybe that's because I'm less than perfect looking myself :-0

You finished it?! me too! It was pretty good. I liked the second one the most, but it definitely had a good ending.

The Skinjacker trilogy was my first Shusterman books, but I loved them and already bought Full Tilt and Unwind, so I'll be reading more soon.
