Paul Lannuier (ww2pt) | 27 comments Empire of Silence was amazing! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Now reading Blind Lake by Robert Charles Wilson,

Also getting near the end of Salvation by Peter F. Hamilton.

message 2004: by Allan (new)

Allan Phillips Just finished The Dispossessed and Six Wakes, and I'm about 15% through The Hunger Games. That won't take long.

message 2007: by Allan (new)

Allan Phillips I just finished The Invisible Man. In keeping with my goal of knocking out the books on my master "top 100" list, I'm also about 2/3 through Cat's Cradle. Finally, I realized that to finish The Naked God by Dec. 31 and keep pace, I needed to read about 400 pages this month, so I've been working on that. I've got Mira Grant's Feed lined up but probably won't get to Ilium this month.

CD | 112 comments I'm reading and have all but completed Awakened. A sci-fi horror work that contains major elements of a thriller too!

This one is going to get a longer review.

message 2010: by Allan (new)

Allan Phillips In the meantime......Persepolis Rising, book 7 of The Expanse series, came out in paperback on Oct. 9, after I finished Cat's Cradle. Time out on everything else till I get through that.

Phil | 58 comments The academy series by McDevitt Jack, currently on Deepsix Love this series!

message 2012: by Patrick (last edited Oct 16, 2018 08:22AM) (new)

Patrick Mcnelis | 16 comments Recently completed The Alchemy Wars series, by Ian Tredillis...highly recommended alternative history robot science fiction. The Mechanical, The Rising, The Liberation.

Just started Salvation, the first book in Peter Hamilton's new series. So far it's a typical Peter Hamilton book, lots of detail. Lots.

Rafael da Silva (morfindel) | 60 comments I am reading Kindred by Octavia E. Butler. It is an interesting book so far.

message 2016: by MadProfessah (new)

MadProfessah (madprofesssah) | 76 comments I also love the Academy series by Jack Mcdevitt! I think the first 3-4 books are the best.

message 2017: by Phil (new)

Phil | 58 comments Finished the first 6 of the Academy series, and just received the latest one, the long sunset, in the mail today!

Scott Phil wrote: "Finished the first 6 of the Academy series, and just received the latest one, the long sunset, in the mail today!"

I just bought it too! But I have a few more books to read before it.

message 2021: by David (new)

David (davidg1951) 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami. About 75% through Books 1 & 2. Fascinated to see how it turns out.

Patrick Mcnelis | 16 comments Scott wrote: "The Time Machine"

One of my all time favorite creepy Twilight Zone-ish science fiction stories.

message 2024: by MadProfessah (new)

MadProfessah (madprofesssah) | 76 comments The Long Sunset isn’t great entry in McDevitt’s Academy series. To me DEEPSIX and THE ENGINES OF GOD and CHINDI are probably the best of the bunch.

message 2025: by Scott (new)

Scott I didn't like Deepsix as much as others. Hey, do you know why that one was put out by a different publisher than all the rest?

Mary Catelli | 659 comments Scott wrote: "I didn't like Deepsix as much as others. Hey, do you know why that one was put out by a different publisher than all the rest?"

Dunno, but a change of editor might explain the difference in the work.

Rafael da Silva (morfindel) | 60 comments Scott wrote: "The Time Machine"

I had a shock when I read it and discovered that the movie from 2000's was not faithful to it.

message 2028: by Phil (new)

Phil | 58 comments Funny, I liked Deepsix probably the best in the series! Breathless!

message 2030: by Rafael (last edited Oct 30, 2018 11:59AM) (new)

Rafael da Silva (morfindel) | 60 comments I started today The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury.

message 2031: by Scott (new)

Scott Phil wrote: "Funny, I liked Deepsix probably the best in the series! Breathless!"

I thought it relied too much on characters making dumb mistakes or errors in judgment.

message 2032: by Graham (new)

Graham (cybergit) | 2 comments I’m reading “The Consuming Fire” by John Scalzi. This is the second book in his Collapsing Empire series. Really enjoying it, very funny, great pacing and characters. More adventure story than hard core sci-fi. However I find his books are a great palate cleanser before diving back into the “hard stuff”.

message 2033: by Patrick (last edited Nov 01, 2018 12:57PM) (new)

Patrick Mcnelis | 16 comments I'm about to start reading Ship Wrecked: Stranded on an alien world, by Mark Wayne McGinnis.

edit 11/1/18: Not good. dnf...

message 2034: by Gary (new)

Gary Gillen | 14 comments I finished reading Red Prophet (Book #2 of The Tales of Alvin Maker) by Orson Scott Card and How to Write Best Selling Fiction by Dean Koontz. I am reading Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow. I plan to read The Autumn Republic (Book #3 of Powder Mage Trilogy) by Brian McClellan next.

message 2035: by Allan (new)

Allan Phillips Finished Persepolis Rising, then my sister-in-law gave me a stack of Vonnegut books, and I got intrigued by Mother Night, so I whipped through that. Then I finished Feed by Mira Grant for another group. I've got The Graveyard Book started, along with a book about Marvin Gaye, and I'm still working to finish The Naked God (halfway through!). I've got The Wind's Twelve Quarters (LeGuin) and The Years of Rice and Salt (Robinson) going on Kindle & audio as well.

message 2036: by Patrick (new)

Patrick Mcnelis | 16 comments I just wasted 3 days reading two of the worst books I've read in some time.

So now I have just started Children of Time

It's one of my favorite books in the Alvin maker series. So perceptive and captivating.

Phil | 58 comments Got sucked in to the Codex Alera series by Jim Butcher; on book six now. Next up is Artemis by Weir to see if it lives up the hype. I really liked The Martian, so we will see.

message 2039: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I started The Calculating Stars by Mary Robinette Kowal last night. I was sucked in from the start!!

message 2040: by Deb (new)

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 66 comments Here is one from the classic sci-fi shelf that I have finally re-read, I hope I am not posting in the wrong place, but the 'Authors' section does not have Edmund Cooper and won't let me add him. Couldn't see a 'reviews' thread either....

message 2050: by Allan (new)

Allan Phillips November finishes: The Graveyard Book (Gaiman), The Wind's Twelve Quarters (LeGuin), Camouflage (Haldeman), Who? (Budrys). Finally finished Robinson's The Years of Rice and Salt on audio. Almost done with Ringworld, and continuing my attempt to finish The Naked God before year end - only 600 pages to go! Meanwhile, I started Islands in the Net (Sterling) on Kindle and Station Eleven (Mandel) on audio.
