Scott | 130 comments I recently finished The Black Dahlia and yesterday finished Equal Rites.

The last 1/4 of Black Dahlia was excellent and I thought Equal Rites was much better thanThe Color of Magic. I will definitely read more of both series.

Now I'm reading Casino Royale.

You both should look into this. Crime NOIR sci-fi. This way you get your crime story AND your sci-fi and I thought it was a really great book. My favourite this year.

Necropolis by Michael Dempsey

MAthieu-you are making me want to recommend When Gravity Fails. Have you read it? My favorite sci-fi detective noir series ever!

I started reading fiction again only last year. I still have a ton of things to read and a ton of things I don't know about, especially in sci-fi. I never heard of When Gravity Fails but I'll add it to my to-read list and get to it eventually, thanks!

I'm just about to start Learning the World: A Scientific Romance, which was nominated for a Hugo a few years ago. I have no idea what it'll be like!

Thanks Mathieu. It does look interesting. I like the link to the free read of the first eight chapters. I wish more books would give a longer preview.

Beezlebug (Rob) | 111 comments For those of you who enjoy The Culture series, io9 has posted the first chapter from The Hydrogen Sonata. I had not seen a synopsis until now and based on what I read this one is going to be moving to the top of my list.

First Chapter

message 961: by Laz (new)

Laz the Sailor (laz7) I'm in the middle of Cloud Atlas, which has sci-fi and metaphysical (eg time-line confusion). I grabbed it after seeing the preview of the movie starring Tom Hanks and Halle Berry. Good so far, as the writing is colorful. The plot is hard to follow due to the multiple timelines, but I have faith that it will all make sense in the end.

Cloud Atlas may not make sense in a "everything will be made clear" way, but trust me, it is awesome.

J.P. | 104 comments Just got done with Year Zero by Rob Reid which I had mixed feelings about. Some parts were quite funny while others went off on a tangent and got too involved with details. Currently reading Robopocalypse which looks to be a love it or hate it proposition.

Mark, yes I've noticed that too about the thread. I thought Werewolf was okay. Not good enough that I'm going to go pick up the sequel any time soon. I will say if you've ever read Glen Duncan before this novel was waaaaay better than those. I read Death of an Ordinary Man and got about 60 pages intoI, Lucifer: Finally, the Other Side of the Story before I gave up. Werewolf was much better than those so I'm not sure if his writing style changed over time or what happened.

message 967: by Beezlebug (Rob) (new)

Beezlebug (Rob) | 111 comments And while I'm on the thread, here's my latest updates:

Catching Fire
Not Taco Bell Material
Machine Man
Mockingjay
Zero Point
Dead Until Dark
Death of an Ordinary Man
Heretics
Giving Up the Ghost: A Story About Friendship, 80s Rock, a Lost Scrap of Paper, and What It Means to Be Haunted
Messiah
Children of Dune
John Dies at the End
Against Gravity

Still on my quest to finish all things Dune related and I went ahead and wrapped up the Hunger Games Trilogy and Apotheosis trilogy (Heretics / Messiah). I wanted to be able to recommend Apotheosis as a great space opera because it started out strong but the ending killed it. Really really bad typical "Hmmm...I've written myself into a corner so I'd better pull a deus ex machina trick".

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 490 comments I'm reading Memories of Ice because I just got a copy with 20 pages in the middle of the book where the top and the bottom of the page is cut off 1 inch, and the text does not start until middle of the page with the text being cut off at the end. I'm loving the book so far.

yay, a response!

yeah, i felt the same way. mixed feelings but enjoyed it overall. however not enough that i will be reading the sequel.

message 971: by Karen (new)

Karen A. Wyle (kawyle) | 63 comments I just reread Mary Doria Russell's The Sparrow and am now rereading the sequel, Children of God. Once again, I'm enjoying the sequel but finding it doesn't reach the incredibly high bar set by the first book. (This is the first time I've read either since starting to write fiction myself, and it's fun to notice her technique in a new way.)

message 972: by Banner (new)

Banner | 138 comments I loved The Sparrow. It is a high point in science fiction to me. I've had Children of God on my tbr list ever since I finished The Sparrow. I don't know what I'm waiting for.

I LOVED Consider Phlebas. I sometimes think we should do a culture series read.....

message 976: by Barry (new)

Barry Kirwan Reading Fall of Hyperion by Dan Simmons. Excellent writing style, but I do feel the story is stretched out in comparison to Hyperion. Still, will keep reading because I need to know how it ends (hope it does this time!)

Thanks for the news, Beezlebug! I haven't read Caliban's War yet but I have it. Leviathan Wakes was great and I thought The Butcher of Anderson Station: A Story of The Expanse was interesting.

message 978: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) I'm reading Magic Bites and The Naked Sun. Isaac Asimov is one of my favorite authors so his books are comfort reads for me :)

Definitely get to Caliban's War when you can. I've loved the series so far and thought Caliban was even better than Leviathan.

message 980: by Scott (new)

Scott | 130 comments I just finished Odd Thomas. I liked it but I knew what was going to happen at the very end so that kind of took away from my enjoyment a little.

Now I'm going to start 12.21: A Novel.

Scott Reading Ancient Shores by Jack McDevitt.

message 984: by Baffi (new)

Baffi I'm currently reading House of Suns by Alastair Reynolds, and I'm already dreading the moment when it's over (I still have 120 pages to go). I love almost every single bit of it so far.

Next in line is Dying Inside by Robert Silverberg.

Darciana, you could drag it out a little bit longer and read his short story 'Thousandth Night' which was the predecessor to House of Suns. Just go into it knowing that he changed some things from Thousandth to Sun as far as the characters are concerned so it doesn't fit nicely together.

message 986: by Sérgio (new)

Sérgio | 74 comments I finished The Wrong End of Time by John Brunner today morning. It was very reminiscent of Philip K. Dick but kind of boring.

I'm planning to read The Affirmation by Christopher Priest next.

I just started Use of Weapons

message 992: by [deleted user] (new)

That's the one I'm reading next :)

message 993: by Baffi (new)

Baffi I've started The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson a while ago, but I got distracted today and squeezed Isaac Asimov's The Caves of Steel in - just to find out it'll be this group's November themed read.
It's my first Asimov and so far (I'm roughly halfway through) I love it. Being a huge fan of Star Trek TNG's Data, I should have read this much sooner anyway, but it's never too late.

Alice (alicemurphy) Some really twisted stuff by Hubert Selby Jr. It's a compilation of The Room, Requiem For a Dream, and Last Exit To Brooklyn. My friend loaned it to me and said that she didn't really condone/recommend it.

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 490 comments I'm reading Theft of Swords (The Riyria Revelations, #1-2) by Michael J. Sullivan , which I'm enjoying so far.
