Matthew Frary | 90 comments Just finished 'Shutter Island' and it was a great read!! I really enjoy Dennis Lehane, especially 'Mystic River' and 'Gone, Baby Gone'.

Tomorrow I'll start 'The Dante Club' by Matthew Pearl.

Jason Clay (goodreadscomwillshakespeare) | 66 comments Nearly finished Super Strings and already making a start on the story of the H bomb and the next one after that will be Revolution 1989 the fall of the Soviet Empire. Boy I read some FUN books don't I ?

I enjoyed Watermelon when I read it a few years back. M.K. is good for a "brain candy" for me.

message 18604: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly I'm currently read The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith. i started reading it last night after it had been sitting on my bookshelf for about 8 months. I figured now was as good a time as any to finally read it.

message 18605: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild I'm back to reading The Postmistress by Sarah Blake and am having a really tough time putting the Kindle down...even when it's going on 5am, BUT I have to say there are some parts just achingly sad and I fear there may be more and more substantial sadness to come. Fingers are crossed that I am wrong as I need a good happy or at least satisfying ending.

Hi Jeane,
I read The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and loved it too. I read The Girl Who Played With Fire (2nd book) and didn't love it as much. It's still very good, but I think Lisbeth Salander is a more interesting character when there's more mystery surrounding her. One of my favorite aspects of the first book is that while she's an integral part of the story, she's an enigma. Her motivations are unknown, so they're fun to think about. When you get into the second book, let me know what you think.

Matthew...I'm curious about how you like the Dante Club. I picked it up at a book sale a few months ago because it sounded interesting, but I don't know anyone who has read it.

message 18608: by F1Wild (new)

F1Wild A find of mine in Ireland raved about The Dante Club, but I never read it. Let us know what you think, Matthew!

I'll keep you and F1Wild posted on what I thnk about it for sure.

message 18610: by Petra (new)

Petra I'd be interested in thoughts about The Dante Club, too. I read Matthew Pearl's The Poe Shadow: A Novel and wasn't impressed.
I'm currently listening to Haunted and don't know what to think about it. The personal stories of each character are interesting and show how damaged these people are. The "present day" story is so weird and unreal and bizarre.
I've started reading Dracula. I'm not far enough along to say much more than that but it has an appealing writing style. Very gothic and phychologically thrilling.

The Romance Reviews (Carole) (The_Romance_Reviews) | 15 comments Skykeepers by Jessica Andersen. So far so good. :)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Finished The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane last night. The concept was better than the execution.

I also read Bloodroot. I found it got better as it went along. Worth picking up at library.

I just finished Saving CeeCee Honeycutt. I loved it. Somewhat like Secret Life of Bees. Will recommend for bookclub.

Carole I'm reading Blacklands. Not sure about this one yet.

message 18616: by Edith (new)

Edith | 256 comments I just started The History of Love. Only 20 pages in but I'm already hooked.

message 18617: by JSou (new)

JSou Edith, I have that one and have been wanting to get to it here soon. Would love to hear what you think about it when you're done.

message 18618: by Edith (new)

Edith | 256 comments Jessica - I'm already in love with the way that the author writes. I'll keep you posted but I have high hopes for this one.

message 18620: by Tani (new)

Tani | 137 comments I'm also reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and liking it a lot. Like others have said, the first 40-50 pages dragged a little, but once I got past those, I've been really into it. It's annoying really, because it's so much not a book that I would have chose to read if so many people hadn't been so enthusiastic about it. I hope it continues to be as good throughout!

message 18621: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I just finished FORD COUNTY by John Grishom and gave it 4 stars. Now I am reading THE WIVES OF HENRY OADES by Johanna Moran and loving it! It s fantastic! I can't put it down!

I heard this is good. I really have to pick this up.

message 18624: by Sasha (new)

Sasha I just finished King Leopold's Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror, and Heroism in Colonial Africa with the Africa book club; it's great if you like feeling bad about humans. Just started Machiavelli's The Prince. The introduction was excellent. I'll let you know about the rest of it.

message 18625: by Chrystal (new)

Chrystal | 144 comments I just finished Masquerade.....going to start Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah later today.

message 18626: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Catamorandi wrote: "I loved The Bell Jar. It is one of my favorite books. Hope you like it."

I would really like to read that one, feeling so curiois about it. It is especially nice I think if you live in a city where the author once lived...like with he having lived in Dublin. I read a bit about ehr online and thought about the places and the things she did when I was in the city center.

message 18627: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Ana wrote: "I started yesterday "Watermelon", by Marian Keys. It's the first book I read from this author and I'm loving it!"

Ana, I read another one of her as my first Keys book..Angelsand liked it a lot. Then I read also Rachel's Holidayand Watermelon. They are so good to read! Aparently, the part of Dublin used in the story, is very realistic for the period of the story. At least I was told by a lady who used to live in that area during that period.

Lekeshua | 40 comments Reading The Girl Who Played With Fire. Had to force myself to put it down. Good so far only 100 pages in.

message 18632: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte (charlotteemilyjane) | 1 comments Just finished The Time Traveler's Wife and now am reading Prozac Nation. I've read some terrible reviews of it but I'm enjoying it a lot so far.

message 18633: by Jason (new)

Jason Clay (goodreadscomwillshakespeare) | 66 comments Hi everyone I finished The search for Super Strings tonight and enjoyed every page. I have gone back to civilizations and that's OK to. Got as far as the sixteenth century and the new world, so obviously got a while to go yet. Its amazing how much information it manages to get into each chapter, when you consider how much its restricted by limitations of space in a comparatively short book.

message 18634: by Angela (new)

Angela (blonde_chick120) | 51 comments I'm currently reading Guest House by Barbara K. Richardson. So far it's been a good read.

message 18635: by Marti (new)

Marti (marjay) | 985 comments I am reading The Scent of Rain and Lightning by Nancy Pickard. It is a first reads and is really quite good. Bonded with the characters and want to know what is going to happen even tho .... I think I know But need to find out for sure....

message 18636: by Jayme (last edited Mar 18, 2010 08:08AM) (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) I'm reading the book of lost things next too! Right after I finish Endless Nights.

message 18637: by Bridgit (new)

Bridgit | 475 comments I'm diversifying my reading here - no platform can hold me:

e-Book - Age of Innocence - 1/2 done
Audio Book - A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - just started(has anyone else noticed how often they talk about Jews and Jew bread and Micks? Some of this is not coming across well 50 years later...)
Real Book - Lord of the Flies (about 10 pages left) and Shades of Grey is in the batters box.

May have to take a bit of a reading hiatus so i can indulge myself to some March Madness. . .

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Julia Child's My Life in France - great read so far.

message 18639: by Tara (new)

Tara (tbm126) I just finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It was decent; nothing overly fantastic.

I am in the middle of A Clash of Kings and I'll start The Count of Monte Cristo sometime very soon, hopefully.

message 18640: by Liz (new)

Liz I'm readingAt Home in Mitford by Jan Karon. I started it about two years ago & just couldn't get into it. Now that it's on my TBR 2010 Goal List, I don't have a choice but to finish it! Now that I've actually gotten further along in the story, I'm enjoying it much more than I thought I would.

message 18641: by Mary (new)

Mary | 203 comments I finished Saving Ceecee Honeycutt: A Novel which I loved - 5 stars! I agree with Carole - I would definitely recommend it to fans of The Secret Life of Bees and The Help.

I just started Major Pettigrew's Last Stand which looks promising as well.

Marti (marjay) | 985 comments I just finished reading The Scent of Rain and Lightning and loved it! I am now moving onto reading The Wives of Henry Oats. I noticed Ann from S.C. is enjoying it - so I hope I will too!

message 18643: by Carol (new)

Carol Debating which book to start next. I want to finish The Prince Of Marshes. I finished Go Down Moses by William Faulkner. That was a fantastic book.

message 18644: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) | 358 comments Mary wrote:"I just started Major Pettigrew's Last Stand which looks promising as well."

I just bought this from Amazon! It sounds delightful.

I just finished The Lady in the Tower by Alison Weir, and started Happy Birthday or Whatever: Track Suits, Kim Chee, and Other Family Disasters, but I must not be finished with the Tudors yet because when I came home from work this morning I went straight to the bookcase and grabbed The Six Wives of Henry VIII, also by Alison Weir. I skipped Katherine of Aragon and most of Anne Boleyn, though, and started with Jane Seymour.

message 18645: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (suz1229) | 11 comments I just finished Saving Ceecee Hunnicut and loved it. I'm now about to finish Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah. I've been enjoying this especially since Russian history has always fascinated me.

I had this one on my bookshelf for over a year before I decided to pick it up and read it. I was glad that I did.

I'm just about to finish Winter Garden and will be reading Saving Ceecee Hunnicut next! I don't know if it's this cold I have or the book but it seems like it took me half the book to really get into it.

message 18648: by Petra (new)

Petra I'm still listening to Haunted. Really, this is a weird, weird book! It's the ultimate in Reality TV where each "constestant" wants/needs to be the "main feature", the one in the spotlight at all times. They are in an impossibly strange situation and keep trying to outdo each other for when they are "rescued" so that they will be the "star" in the movie that will be made of their experiences. (they're all convinced that their plight will be turned into a movie). Bizarre, bizarre, bizarre.
I'm continuing with Cujo. It's not a great story...moves rather slowly. Lots of inappropriate reactions and anger from characters.
Despite these books, I think I'll start Italian Shoes: A Novel tonight. It's a library book and needs to go back soon.

message 18649: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Petra, Stephen King says that Cujo was written during the worst of his alcoholism and he doesn't remember anything about writing it. Weird, huh? It's a decent book.

Linda | 887 comments Mary wrote: "I finished Saving Ceecee Honeycutt: A Novel which I loved - 5 stars! I agree with Carole - I would definitely recommend it to fans of The Secret Life of Bees and [book:..."

Mary: I totally agree with you about Saving Ceecee Honeycutt. I loved the characters; they took on a reality to me that doesn't often happen when I read a book. I, too, gave it a 5.
