What We Buried by Caitlyn Siehl
“Don't you do that.
Don't you look at what I had for you and call it weak.
Not when you were the one afraid of it.
I stood there with my hands open,
my mouth bruised tender with supplication.
Don't you dare treat me like a victim of my own emotions,
like being moved to my knees by love
was a mistake that I regret.
I will go to my grave with the memory of the bravery in my bones.”

Technically 3.5 stars, bumped up to 4. I've been hearing rave reviews about this one for years, but never really had the chance to pick it up. It wasn't quite what I expected, but it was interesting and fairly well written. It's engaging. It tackles ...more

The first half of this book is obnoxious. The characters are all static, trying so hard to be something they aren't. They lack individuality and personality. But then the second half comes along, and all of a sudden, the characters are brilliantly ...more

First I read The Fault in Our Stars and I disliked it. Then I read Looking for Alaska, and I marginally liked it. Finally, I picked up Paper Towns.

Maybe it's because I didn't expect much. More likely it's because Green's characters are so realistic

Robert Louis Stevenson
“Jekyll had more than a father's interest; Hyde had more than a son's indifference.”
Robert Louis Stevenson, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Robert Louis Stevenson
“Half an hour from now, when I shall again and for ever reindue that hated personality, I know how I shall sit shuddering and weeping in my chair, or continue, with the most strained and fear-struck ecstasy of listening, to pace up and down this room (my last earthly refuge) and give ear to every sound of menace. Will Hyde die upon the scaffold? or will he find the courage to release himself at the last moment? God knows; I am careless; this is my true hour of death, and what is to follow concerns another than myself. Here, then, as I lay down the pen, and proceed to seal up my confession, I bring the life of that unhappy Henry Jekyll to an end.”
Robert Louis Stevenson, The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Anne Brontë
“Is it that they think it a duty to be continually talking,' pursued she: 'and so never pause to think, but fill up with aimless trifles and vain repetitions when subjects of real interest fail to present themselves? - or do they really take a pleasure in such discourse?'

'Very likely they do,' said I; 'their shallow minds can hold no great ideas, and their light heads are carried away by trivialities that would not move a better-furnished skull; - and their only alternative to such discourse is to plunge over head and ears into the slough of scandal - which is their chief delight.”
Anne Brontë, The Tenant of Wildfell Hall

Abigail Adams
“If particular care and attention is not paid to the ladies, we are determined to foment a rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any laws in which we have no voice or representation.”
Abigail Adams, The Letters of John and Abigail Adams

Caitlyn Siehl
“when your little girl
asks you if she’s pretty
your heart will drop like a wineglass
on the hardwood floor
part of you will want to say
of course you are, don’t ever question it
and the other part
the part that is clawing at
will want to grab her by her shoulders
look straight into the wells of
her eyes until they echo back to you
and say
you do not have to be if you don’t want to
it is not your job
both will feel right
one will feel better
she will only understand the first
when she wants to cut her hair off
or wear her brother’s clothes
you will feel the words in your
mouth like marbles
you do not have to be pretty if you don’t want to
it is not your job”
