Elizabeth A (kisiwa) | 193 comments Yes! I plan on attending, but am currently traveling, so will touch base when I return and decide which sessions I'll be attending. See you then.

Sadly, I think I'll have to miss it again this year. Need to spend some time with family, and can't really drag them with me after dragging my husband all the way to Santa Cruz to be the official Booktopia photographer/door opener.

message 353: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, I'm definitely going! I'd like to attend the following sessions:
11a The Short Story
12:30p Great Brits and Great Books
2:30p Readings in the Forum
4:15p The Future of Reading
though I do, of course have several back-ups in case those are full. It was super hard to choose!
So I'd be down to meet for a mid-afternoon chat and even a dinner once the last session ends around 5:30.

So excited!
jamie

message 354: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth A (kisiwa) | 193 comments Jaime looks like we've got a couple in common.
Vanessa, I'm not sure there is enough time to meet during the day, unless we are all attending the same session. I would be available for dinner after 7pm though.

My list:
11a The Short Story
12:45p Fiction: Heaven Knows
2:30p Graphic Novels
4:15p Future of Reading
6p Keynote - Richard Ford

message 355: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (talkbookstome) | 114 comments Elizabeth - whoo hoo! We're going to two together. The Fiction: Heaven Knows and the Keynote! Have you bought a ticket yet? I haven't. Better do it soon!

Here are mine:

11am - Either Lemony Snicket OR The Hobbit discussion
12:30pm - Fiction: Heaven Knows
2:30pm - Either The Brain: Thinking about Thinking OR Uncanny Imagination
4:00pm - Political Culture
6:00pm - Richard Ford

message 356: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jentwist) | 109 comments I'm jealous - wish I could fly back just for the weekend! Have a great time and report back here on who you guys see at the festival.

And Vanessa - I love your new avatar!

message 357: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (talkbookstome) | 114 comments Haha! Thank you Jennifer! We should all plan on going to the same Booktopia next year - to the Washington or Michigan one! Somewhere we've never been! :)

message 358: by Callie (new)

Callie (calliekl) | 646 comments Very sad that I'm going to miss the BBF this year! Have a great time ladies! Can we organize a meet up soon?

message 359: by Marly (new)

Marly | 152 comments I'm sorry to have missed the last few meet ups and I will not be at the book festival but I'd love to meet up again soon.
A group trip to Booktopia sounds awesome!

message 360: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (talkbookstome) | 114 comments Okay gang, how are we feeling about a meetup this Sunday afternoon/evening for a catch up on what everyone's been reading? Anyone game? ps: Many literary movies coming out in the next two months! We should organize a BOTNS date night! :)

message 361: by Loretta (new)

Loretta (lorettalucia) | 136 comments I've got a hair appointment in the afternoon, but maybe in the evening? I haven't met up with you guys for like a year and a half...

message 362: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth A (kisiwa) | 193 comments Would love to meet up, but am sick at the moment. Staying in bed with A Storm of Swords - perfect for sick days. Sorry to miss this one, and hope you see you all soon.

message 363: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (talkbookstome) | 114 comments @Elizabeth - It's only Thursday night! You could be miraculously recovered by Sunday night! :D

message 364: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, I'd love to join you on Sunday. And for the future movie date, too. Sounds like my cup of tea.

message 365: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (tracemick) | 217 comments I wish I could! My son has a football game and my daughter and I are going to see the Olympic gymnasts in Boston on Sunday! Very excited for some one-on-one mom and daughter time. But keep me posted on movie date night!

Darn, I will be working and then driving kids around on Sunday. :(

message 367: by Callie (new)

Callie (calliekl) | 646 comments I think I'm in, I just have to check to make sure I'm not forgetting a previous engagement. (I can never remember what I have planned.) What time? Would 4 be too early?

message 368: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth A (kisiwa) | 193 comments @Vanessa, does not look like it. Am headed to the doc for some drugs today. Do not like how my lungs sound. But in case of a miracle, I might apparate over :)

message 369: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (talkbookstome) | 114 comments I can do 4pm! People could always come whenever and stay until whenever.

Also, here is the line up of "movies based on books" coming up in the next two months. There are a TON!

Lincoln (Nov. 16th release)- I think I read that Team of Rivals was used to help with the script-writing.
Anna Karenina (Nov. 16th release) - Based on the novel by Leo Tolstoy.
Life of Pi (Nov. 21st release) - Based on the novel by Yann Martel
The Hobbit (Dec. 14th release) - Based on the book by J.R.R. Tolkien.
Jack Reacher (Dec 21st release) - Based on the novel by Lee Child
On the Road (Dec. 21st release) - Based on the novel by Jack Kerouac... but watch out co-starring Kristin Stewart... not thrilled about that.

My vote is for Anna Karenina or The Hobbit (which I am reading right now! I am spoken for on Life of Pi although, being on of my favorite books, I'm sure I'll want to see it again! :)

message 370: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (talkbookstome) | 114 comments @Elizabeth - Nice Harry Potter reference.

message 371: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (talkbookstome) | 114 comments @Ann - You are completely off the hook for these gatherings. You don't even live in the Boston area! Plus, we all need you to be working on this week's podcast! :)

What are you guys doing on Sunday, December 2 at 2pm?

An organization that I belong to (and that you should, too) is the Women's National Book Association, Boston chapter. (They allow men, too).

On Dec. 2, they are having their annual holiday tea at the Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston. This year's program is an insider's look at the Best American Short Stories anthology, with the series editor and authors Jennifer Haigh and Edith Pearlman (she won the Nat'l Book Award last year, I think).

Tickets are $40 for members and $45 for nonmembers, but it looks like I can buy a table of 5 for $200.

Anyone interested? Let me know. I need to send the check by 11/23, but probably sooner is better.

Here's more info: http://www.wnbaboston.org/events_p2.php

Callie (calliekl) | 646 comments Ann, I am so in, sounds like a great time.

message 375: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (talkbookstome) | 114 comments Oh my goodness, Ann! That sounds superb! I am so completely on board with this! If we can get five people we can get a table! If not, I'd also be willing to send you a check for $45 or buy my ticket directly!

ps: @Callie, Jamie and Lorreta - We still on for tomorrow at 4pm until whenever? Crema Cafe in Harvard Square work for everyone?

message 376: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes! 4p at Crema, might bring Alexandra too!

message 377: by Callie (new)

Callie (calliekl) | 646 comments I will be there!

Ann, count me in. Sounds fab. Let me know how I should send you the money.

message 379: by [deleted user] (new)

Ladies, I won't be able to make it at 4p but will show up later (5ish) and will look for you if you're still around!

message 380: by Callie (new)

Callie (calliekl) | 646 comments I'm here, red and black checked scarf and a copy of Mmajor Pettigrew's Last Stand.

message 381: by Callie (new)

Callie (calliekl) | 646 comments Hey ladies! Lots of fun last night, even though the cafe tried to cook us out!

Vanessa, do you remember the book you picked up about first-world problems? I did some googling and couldn't find it again, and the title was so great.

message 382: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (talkbookstome) | 114 comments Yes! It's called "Don't Get Too Comfortable: The Indignities of Coach Class, The Torments of Low Thread Count, The Never-Ending Quest for Artisanal Olive Oil, and Other First World Problems" by David Rakoff

Here is the link:
http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/90...

I should have bought it. I could use a little humor in my TBR line-up.

message 383: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jentwist) | 109 comments Hi Boston Gang! I just wanted to say hi since I am missing the Crema nights.
Vanessa - that's a great title. I haven't read any David Rakoff before...recommend?
Elizabeth - I hope you are feeling better...although a sick day in bed with a big book actually sounds pretty good.
I've been having a hard time settling into a book after Stephen King's 11.22.63 but I just started The Twelve so that should keep me happy this week.
I miss having book peeps to meet! :-)

message 384: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (talkbookstome) | 114 comments @Jennifer - I have not yet read David Rakoff... but I was intrigued by the title! Sounds up my alley. My boyfriend and I are listening to The Twelve on audio and we both agree it's even better than The Passage! :D We miss you so much here!! But since you can't join us here, get out and meet some fabulous bookish brits!

Ann (akingman) | 2097 comments Mod
OK, can we get 1 more person for the Short Story event on 12/2? That will allow us to have our own table.

So far I have
Callie
Vanessa
Elizabeth
Me

Deadline is 11/25 but I'd like to reserve earlier. So Let's say the deadline is Monday 11/19. Once we have a fifth, I'll reserve the table and you can paypal me or send a check.

If we don't have a 5th, then I'll put the link here and everyone can buy their tickets individually and we will just try to get 4 seats together.

message 386: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Slater (tracyslater) | 39 comments All--I so wish I could join you! I'm from Boston but am living in Osaka and won't be back in Boston in time for this. But the BOTS podcasts help get me through the expat exile!

message 387: by Marly (new)

Marly | 152 comments Is it Sunday Dec 2 at 2? If there is still room please count me in. I've been a bit out of the loop lately and I would love to meet up.

Marly, yes, you're #5!! Excellent.

I will order the tickets tomorrow.

Callie, Vanessa, Elizabeth and Marly, you can either paypal me (annkingman@gmail.com) $40 each, or just bring the money on December 2nd. I know you're all good for it :)

Thanks!

Just a reminder to Callie, Vanessa, Elizabeth and Marly: See you Sunday, right? The table is reserved, tea starts at 2pm at the Fairmont Copley Plaza, 138 Dartmouth St. in Boston.
I will try to be there around 1:30 to grab out table just in case it isn't actually reserved.

message 393: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (talkbookstome) | 114 comments Ann - Absolutely! I am bringing you a check on Sunday! $45 right? I'll be there a bit before 2pm. How long does it go until? Jamie and I will be hitting up Brookline Booksmith afterwards... anyone want to come?

I'm super excited about this. See you all there! :)

Just $40 .. I got the member price for all since I bought an entire table (which, by the way, I've never before done. It feels impressive, even though this isn't a $1000/p,ate fundraiser...)

They are also doing a gently used book drive at the tea:

"Holiday Book Drive: At the event, WNBA will be collecting gently-used books for donation to More Than Words. If you would like to contribute, please see here for a list of acceptable books/genres
http://mtwyouth.org/book_donations/bo...

If you plan on donating, please email us at wnbaboston@gmail.com so that we can get an idea of how many books we'll need to handle.
