I'm sobbing because I missed all the fun! Congratulations, Jennifer!

message 52: by Callie (new)

Callie (calliekl) | 646 comments Hi everyone! Just wanted to let you know that I will be scheduling the tour soon (they recommend 3 weeks in advance) for the May 21st outing in Boston. As of right now, the following people have emailed me about joining the tour:
Ann
Trish
Marly
Tracey
Loretta
Jennifer

Let me know if you contacted me and your name isn't on the list, or if you would still like to go!

Callie (calliekl) | 646 comments Just wanted to let everyone know that we are booked for the 21st! I am doublechecking on times, but I think we're going to be meeting @ 10:30. I'll post more information as I get it. My retreat shirt also came in the mail today, perfect timing!

If anyone has any restaurant ideas, that would be great!

Ann (akingman) | 2097 comments Mod
yay! Looking forward to it :)

message 55: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 48 comments So jealous I can't make it. I'm definetly going to do that tour though, it looks amazing. Also, I can atest that the BBF is a wonderful experience and I can't wait to go again this year. We'll have to keep in touch so we can all meet up.

message 56: by Trish (new)

Trish (bowedbookshelf) Fingers crossed for good weather on Saturday. It should be cleared up by then (I hope?) Not that it matters. It's very British to carry around an umbrella, no?

message 57: by Loretta (new)

Loretta (lorettalucia) | 136 comments Trish wrote: "Fingers crossed for good weather on Saturday. It should be cleared up by then (I hope?) Not that it matters. It's very British to carry around an umbrella, no?"

LOL, I'll be sporting a (knock-off) trench coat and Wellies. ;-)

Ooh, good excuse for buying cute rain boots!

message 59: by Trish (new)

Trish (bowedbookshelf) Just to confirm: we meet by the corner of School and Washington at 10:20am? Closest T-station appears to be Blue/Orange Line State Street, or Red/Orange Line Downtown Crossing, Red/Green Line Park Street. See you there?

message 60: by Callie (new)

Callie (calliekl) | 646 comments Trish- I think that is the case, I'm just waiting to hear back from "Boston By Foot" for the confirmation.

Can't believe it's almost here, this will be a VERY welcome end to this insane week.

message 61: by Loretta (new)

Loretta (lorettalucia) | 136 comments Trish wrote: "Just to confirm: we meet by the corner of School and Washington at 10:20am? Closest T-station appears to be Blue/Orange Line State Street, or Red/Orange Line Downtown Crossing, Red/Green Line Park ..."

That's where the giant Borders is, right? There are a bunch of benches by the Irish famine memorial/statues.

message 62: by Marly (new)

Marly | 152 comments I'm flying out of Chicago today and my flight has already been delayed. I'm looking forward to a nice day Saturday after a very busy week. See you all Sat.

message 63: by Loretta (new)

Loretta (lorettalucia) | 136 comments Marly wrote: "I'm flying out of Chicago today and my flight has already been delayed. I'm looking forward to a nice day Saturday after a very busy week. See you all Sat."

The fog here is CRAZY right now. I can barely see the building across the street from my office. Delayed flights are annoying as hell, but probably better to play it safe in this kind of weather.

message 64: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (talkbookstome) | 114 comments Is there room for one more? I'd love to join you guys! Sorry, I know it's last minute!

message 65: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jentwist) | 109 comments I'm very excited for this Saturday. Thanks for doing all the planning, Callie!

message 66: by Trish (new)

Trish (bowedbookshelf) Thanks for doing all the planning, Callie!

Yes, Callie. Sorry if I jumped the gun.

message 67: by Callie (last edited May 19, 2011 05:29AM) (new)

Callie (calliekl) | 646 comments So here's the scoop. I've been trying to get in touch with Boston By Foot for confirmation information, and I am getting a tiny bit worried because I haven't heard back yet. If I don't hear anything, I'll let you guys know. I know I'd love to still see you all, so I hope you still want to get together! I'll keep you posted!

And of course, Vanessa, if you would like to join us we can definitely fit you in!

message 68: by Ann (new)

Ann (akingman) | 2097 comments Mod
Would still love to get together, but if I can request a slightly later time if that's the case? I can make the 10ish tour if that's when it is, but after 11 would be even better if we're not tied to a specific time.

Thanks!

message 69: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (tracemick) | 217 comments I would also love to get together whether we do the tour or not. If we're not doing the tour, I, like Ann, would appreciate a later time. :)

Thank you, Callie, for organizing this! You're awesome!

Yep, I'd join just for book browsing and lunch, if that turns out to be what happens.

Does anyone have any ideas for book stores or lunch spots?

message 71: by Trish (new)

Trish (bowedbookshelf) So here's the scoop. I've been trying to get in touch with Boston By Foot for confirmation information, and I am getting a tiny bit worried because I haven't heard back yet... My guess is that this is a part-time gig for someone and they only deal with it on certain days, hence the lack of the response.

message 72: by Callie (new)

Callie (calliekl) | 646 comments Yay! Confirmation came in today, we are scheduled for 10:30 in front of the Borders on School St and Washington.

Can't wait to see you all there!

message 73: by Trish (new)

Trish (bowedbookshelf) Okay!

message 74: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jentwist) | 109 comments Terrific! See you all then!

message 75: by Ann (new)

Ann (akingman) | 2097 comments Mod
Yay! Thanks for putting this together, Callie!

message 76: by Loretta (new)

Loretta (lorettalucia) | 136 comments Weather report now says that it won't start raining until later in the day tomorrow. Yay!

Also, Callie, how much is the tour per person? I need to remember to stop by the ATM tonight...

message 77: by Marly (new)

Marly | 152 comments I'm heading out to meet you all in Boston. I'll be the one with the happy face : )

message 78: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (tracemick) | 217 comments Everyone have a good time. I woke up this morning with an eye infection and I can't see clearly out of my right eye so I'm homebound today. :( I was looking forward to seeing you and thanks, Callie for putting it together. Have fun!

message 79: by Trish (new)

Trish (bowedbookshelf) Ended up buying The Carpet Wars: From Kabul to Baghdad: A Ten-Year Journey Along Ancient Trade Routes at the Brattle bookstore after our luncheon. Borders had none of the things on my list in stock & I need to keep a lid on book purchases. But as you see...I did not escape unscathed...

message 80: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jentwist) | 109 comments What a great day walking around Boston - especially beautiful Beacon Hill which was chock full of lit history - and then lunch at Scollay Square. We missed you Tracey! We definitely need to set up another Boston meet up soon. Thank you again, Callie, for organizing such a fun day!

message 81: by Callie (new)

Callie (calliekl) | 646 comments I had such a great time with everyone! It was so great to see all of the landmarks and hear all of the stories. I still have goosebumps thinking of Charles Dickens doing a reading of Christmas Carol just blocks from where we stood.

I also had a great time with Loretta at the Brattle checking out the stacks of books! I ended up walking away with a couple- Steve Martin's Shopgirl, and The Bells by Richard Harvill.

Thanks to everyone for coming, and it was no trouble to set up! I'd be happy to do it again!

Ann (akingman) | 2097 comments Mod
Everyone, I had a great time, and thank you for the beautiful weather (finally!!).

message 83: by Loretta (new)

Loretta (lorettalucia) | 136 comments I too had a fantastic time.

... and of course, ended up buying the following at the Brattle:

War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy Citizen Soldiers The U. S. Army from the Normandy Beaches to the Bulge to the Surrender of Germany by Stephen E. Ambrose The Anatomy Lesson by Philip Roth

I'm sure I won't get to War and Peace that soon... actually, currently reading the P&V translation of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy , but still glad to get it. :)

message 84: by Marly (new)

Marly | 152 comments I had a wonderful time on Saturday, I'm still trying to figure out how to upload the group photo. Anyone have any ideas? I ended up buying The Tiger's Wife by Téa Obreht and a few magazines that are more difficult to find around my home. I tried to find How to Live A Life of Montaigne in One Question and Twenty Attempts at an Answer by Sarah Bakewell at Borders but they did not have it.
@Callie, thank you for puting it together and I'm with you on the Dickens reading goosebumps!! Very cool.

message 85: by Marly (new)

Marly | 152 comments I forgot to say two things.
1) Callie, I started Soulless and it is wonderful so far!
2) I cannot wait to get my hands on The Night Circus when it finally comes out, I feel like we got some great inside scoop.

message 86: by Trish (last edited May 23, 2011 07:19AM) (new)

Trish (bowedbookshelf) I'm reading How to Live: A Life of Montaigne in One Question and Twenty Attempts at an Answernow and think it is a wonderful look at a life that could be contemporaneous with ours...I also can't wait for The Night Circus. Sounds fabulous!

message 89: by Trish (new)

Trish (bowedbookshelf) Hey, what happened to Vanessa? Did we ever hear?

The festival was a success! There are some pictures posted on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?s...

Hey, if you're not busy on Friday night (June 3rd), come to Porter Square Books in Cambridge -- I'll be part of a panel of book bloggers giving our recommendations for summer reading. It's a great bookstore, too, and maybe we can grab a coffee or something afterwards.

Oo, sounds neat. I'll see if any of my coworkers might want to come.

Marly | 152 comments I ran the Corporate Challenge race last night in Boston (with 12,000 of my closest friends - yikes), were any of you Boston people there? It was so much fun! We were right near the booktour we did.

I think some people I work with ran, but I could not be there. Congrats on the race! :)

message 97: by Trish (new)

Trish (bowedbookshelf) Hey, Marly, congratulations on getting out there in the w-i-i-i-n-d. It was really windy last night, no? And 12,000 people. Astonishing. Great job!

I did get my pictures from the Literary Walk up on my flickr account. Couldn't label them all (space cadet), but it was a pretty day.

message 98: by Marly (new)

Marly | 152 comments Trish, those are wonderful photos. What a gorgeous city, we are lucky to live so close to such rich history. That was fun!

message 99: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jentwist) | 109 comments Ann - I was sorry I wasn't able to get to Porter Square last night. I would have loved to see you and Marie give your recommendations.

Marly - congratulations on running the Corporate Challenge!!

Trish - great pictures. Thanks for sharing! I need to post mine as well. I haven't used flickr before but maybe its finally time I did. I will post a link when they are out there.

message 100: by Trish (new)

Trish (bowedbookshelf) I went to Porter Square Books last night and it was great! Lots of folks and some great recommendations. Will try to get the listing up--some from listeners as well--on the Events section (not made yet) of my blog shortly.
