Athira (Reading on a Rainy Day) (readingonarainyday) Three months into 2011, it's time for our first review!

At this point, you may find that the target you set at the beginning of the year was too ambitious or too easy. Or you may find some unexpected change of plans for this year and suddenly find more or less reading time in your hands. Rather than changing your reading goal too many times a year, or pressuring yourself to meet your target, you get the opportunity to review your progress three times a year. This is entirely optional. Even if you don't plan to change your target, let us know where you are on your reading and if you're happy with how the first quarter has gone by. (Treat it as the quarterly "meet-up" for readers from all the lounges!)

If you plan to update your reading goal, simply decide your new target, and move your thread to the specific lounge. Remember to update your thread topic.

To move your thread to a different folder, click on the "(edit)" button beside your thread topic, choose the correct folder in the "folder" drop-down list and click "Save".

Unapologetic_Bookaholic Great idea! I'm relocating, maybe getting a new job. Which will def cut into reading time. Thanks for the reminder.

Debbie (db_debber) | 137 comments lol, I have struggled with this question for a few weeks myself. Many times lately I have realized that my reading time is more limited this year than it was last year so I have thought about reducing my goal. But then I have good weeks.

Still not sure if I can, but I am actually going to leave my goal where it is, but thanks for the option.

message 4: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (michelle_mc) | 302 comments I've had a good start this year but with 3 kids 6 and under things do not always go as planned! I'm keeping my 150 target but I think I'm going to beat it early. Im not raising it as I don't want to give myself the feeling that I NEED to read as that always backfires on me :(

I'm 63/150 :)

message 5: by LynnB (last edited Apr 01, 2011 10:51PM) (new)

LynnB I'm just about on-target for my goal so I'm happy, though I feel like there has been a lot going on that has kept me from reading as much as I wanted to. If I can read 17-18 books a month, I'll stay on track. I'm at 54/200.

message 6: by Ivy (new)

Ivy (luvbug) I am going to leave my goal where it is at this point. I am a couple of books behind where I wanted to be by now but this have settled down around here so am confident that I can get them read and more beside before I have to consider moving my goal or not...

message 7: by Jennifer C (new)

Jennifer C I am struggling with this as I am ahead of schedule at 33 books (aiming for 100) which puts on potential target for the 144 from last year (I am 3 books shy), but like Michelle said, I am afraid if I change I will feel like I have to read, so for this update, I will stay where I am at, maybe changing next quarter.

I will say, I am so proud of myself for reading so much already this year. I have taken part in some wonderful stories and I am loving it. I have also found I am reading a little faster now too.

message 8: by Lindy (new)

Lindy (lindylee) | 37 comments Right now I have read 120 books towards my goal of 365 books, so I am on track unless something goes wrong.

Lindy

message 9: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 776 comments Mod
i'm right on track, so far so good, but the June/July time frame could change my reading because I have my comps for my phd then, so i'm trying to read ahead and hopefully not have to adjust my goal of 350...i'm at 123 right now (I think)

message 10: by Dorothy (new)

Dorothy (vilette) | 208 comments I think I am in good shape having read 43 books toward my goal of 150 so I will stay with that goal.

message 11: by Angela (new)

Angela (angbens) I am at 28/100....staying there as of right now.

message 12: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Lane (jaxlane) | 126 comments I think I'm in good shape.

message 13: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 15 comments I think I'm in good shape...I read 46 out of my 200, which is about 4 short of where I should be, but one of them was over 900 pages! I don't think I will read anything else that big for a while!

message 14: by TinaNoir (new)

TinaNoir I'm right on target -- 50/200. So the first quarter of the year has passed and I am 25% done. I thought I'd get behind because I read a couple of fantasy door stoppers. But managed to balance them out with a couple of shorter books. Hadn't planned it that way, just happened to work out.

message 15: by BJ Rose (new)

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 93 comments I'm ahead of my goal right now, but I usually read less in vacation and holiday months because of family gatherings, so I'm going to leave my goal as-is for now. As others have mentioned, I'd rather exceed my goal than scramble to try to meet it!

But thanks for the message, Aths - you reminded me to update my online records to show what I read in March.

message 16: by Patricia (new)

Patricia (pdoyle) My goal was 50 for this year so I should be reading about 4 books a month. I'm averaging about 3 a month but I'm hoping to catch up so I'm going to leave my goal like it is for now.

message 17: by Afsana (last edited Apr 01, 2011 12:34PM) (new)

Afsana (afsanaz) I am 30 on my 150 target bit behind where should be and reading less then expected (though not buying less) at this rate may only hit 120 but 100 to easy so will remain at 150 and strive to do better

Reading so much slower was on 41 last yr at this time and 59 by the end of april and finished the year on 177

but in May of last yr had a absurd amount of 34 books read in that month

last yr was listening to audio books haven't this year

message 18: by Athira (new)

Athira (Reading on a Rainy Day) (readingonarainyday) I love it that so many of us are on target, some even ahead!

I'm at 24/100, just one book shy of a quarter of my goal, but I believe I can catch up. I haven't had much of a reading time because my family's visiting me. Hopefully next couple of quarters, I can read more.

message 19: by Donnajo (new)

Donnajo I think I'm good so far. 43/150. I checked last year and I was at 44 books so I'm only 1 book behind. But if I can keep up a good monthly book count like march which was 17 books. I think I'll be okay. I really don't want to lower it.

message 20: by Shay (new)

Shay | 330 comments I read 103 books as of the end of March. I think I'm fine. The only are I'm behind in is that I had a goal to read 10-15 (15 was wishful thinking) books per month from the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die list and I'm deficient in those.

message 21: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa (alyssa_hesper) Right now I'm at 55/200 so I'll be keeping my goal the same. It's so inspiring to see the progress that everyone has made towards their goal!

message 22: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm at 28/100, So I should be good right where I'm at:D

message 23: by KrisT (new)

KrisT | 414 comments I seem to be on track but that is really not what motivates me. Just the idea of trying to hit this goal has motivated me to read this that and everything I come across practically. I am happy where I am. :)

message 24: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy (paintedlady75) im 29/200 :) i'm pretty confident that i will make the goal!!

message 25: by Joanie (new)

Joanie (joaniemaloney) 36/150 right now, so I'm a little bit behind. I did slow down a lot during February and had to make it up in March, but I think I'll be able to catch up. Not sure if I could keep up this pace all year because it's getting more difficult, but it's good to finally get through my pile of library books. More motivation!

message 26: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (vanessamc) I've only done 53, but my beginning goal was only 100, and so I think I'll go up to the 200 goal. Thanks for the reminder.

message 27: by Erin (new)

Erin (gwytherinn) | 2 comments I'm doing well right now, with an average of three books a month. I'm definitely going to keep my goal of 50 set for now and I hope that once I graduate from school my reading time will grow. Maybe I'll be able to concentrate on some of the weightier stuff on my list that I'd really like to read!

9/50

message 28: by Kim (new)

Kim | 2 comments I'm at 22 / 52 or 44% done, far ahead of schedule. I think I'll shoot for 75 books. I read 46 books last year, so I'm pretty proud of my accomplishment already.

message 29: by Megan (new)

Megan | 20 comments I've been pulling alot of hours at work for the past three months and when I wasn't working I kept getting sick. I still want to keep my goal to read 100 books- I have a few days off coming up and have a few books I want to read in that time.
I think I will change some of my challenge though- some of the series I wanted to try are not available at my bookstore and are hard to come by.

13/100 :s

message 30: by Renee (new)

Renee | 48 comments I am doing awesome this year!! I had surgery the begining of last month so have been out of commission with nothing else to do so I am way ahead of my number at this time last year I usually average 6-10 books a month but for March I have 15 read. When I did my count at the end of the month I was shocked. I should not have a problem meeting my goal even after I go back to work in a couple of weeks.

30 of my goal of 100 done

message 31: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 95 comments i think i'm good where i'm at! i've finished 21/100, but i have 2 books going now, and a few more ready to go. one of those is the first of a series, so i'll probably pick up a few more fairly quickly as i continue the series. so it looks like i'll be keeping my goal at 100!

message 32: by Rossy (new)

Rossy (naughtybookjunkie) | 65 comments Well i think i'm on track, 68/250. I'm trying to decide how i'm going to update my thread though, last year did not work out too well and i'm not sure this year i can list all the books i have read thus far either....just too much work. Maybe i should just list my favorite out of each month and just update with that and how many i have read for that month?

message 33: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) I'm ahead of schedule for my target. I'm gonna keep my goal the same though because I never know what will happen with my job in the summer.

message 34: by Deborah (new)

Deborah (deborahkliegl) I'm ahead of schedule, but going to leave the target where it is for now. We may end up moving and then who knows what will happen.

message 35: by Stacie (new)

Stacie (stacieh) | 247 comments At the end of March I was at 36/144 (I'm determined to hit that goal at some point! lol) so I'm right on track. That still makes me a little nervous because work will be crazy (and exhausting) for the next several months and I expect that my reading will slow down. Still, I'm keeping my goal at 144 :)

message 36: by Cyndi (new)

Cyndi (sendie) | 11 comments This is the first time I've done this, so I'll keep my goal of 100 books. I think I'm doing ok with 29 books read so far. I don't know why the auto-tracker says 27 books, but I've read 29 so far?

message 37: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 776 comments Mod
have you made sure that you've put a read date in for all of them? i had to do that and double check...it was a pain, but i found it eventually

message 38: by Lindy (new)

Lindy (lindylee) | 37 comments As of March end I have reached 119 of 365, so I am ahead, but this quarter I do read more. I usually read about 30 books a month.

The goodreads tracker only lists books whose read date is for that year itself. So if you reread any book this year, but the read date is set to some other year, they will not be counted to this year's tally.

message 40: by Pat (new)

Pat | 162 comments Well I am behind 33/150 but like the little engine - I think I can. I think I can. So I am going to keep my goal at 150. Some of the books I picked were not that good and a few I didn't finish so felt as if I "wasted" reading time. I'm trying to better in terms of selection.

message 41: by Deanna (new)

Deanna (classmum) | 134 comments I am doing much better this year. Over 60 now. Thought about upping the goal to 200 but pretty sure I wouldn't able to do that. Especially once the weather gets warmer. We even had snow yesterday so I rather be inside reading that outside freezing!

Also, someone had mentioned (somewhere) that there is some sort of "bug" in the tracker and it's not counting books whose finish date is Janurary 1st and/or January 2nd. So, it might be a quick fix to just reset the finish date of a book. Also, if you added a book as "read" without adding it as "currently reading" first, I think it won't show up.

message 43: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 776 comments Mod
AFAIK they fixed the Jan 1 issue - because my books finished that day are showing

i'm really bad about keeping my currently reading list up to date, and quite often just list a book as finished and its been showing up...that is why i keep a list here and an excel one

message 44: by BJ Rose (new)

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 93 comments When I'm on a reading jag, I read and post books directly from To-Read to Read (and sometimes I even skip the To-Read list), and some books that I've read languish on my Currently-Reading list because I'm planning on writing a review someday. Right now, my GR tracker and my written list only differ by 7 books, and 4 of those are rereads, so won't get counted in this year's tracker because I keep the originally-read date and enter a personal note to show the date I reread it. So it looks like mine is pretty accurate.

message 45: by Shay (new)

Shay | 330 comments Well, I just added a book and entered it directly as "read". It showed up on the overall list of books read, but didn't show up in stats or in the GR challenge.

message 46: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 776 comments Mod
if you move it from your currently reading to your read, then it automatically sets the date read...if you go straight to read, then you have to go in and manually set the date

message 47: by Athira (last edited Apr 03, 2011 01:58PM) (new)

Athira (Reading on a Rainy Day) (readingonarainyday) I just keep a shelf for each year. I'm not happy with how the goodreads tracker works. I reread a lot of books, and I hate to change the read date. I also don't like it that they can put a book only against one year - that's so restricting. So until they let us add multiple read dates (first read and then reread dates) to a book, I'll just create a new shelf for each year.

message 48: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm happy with 77 for the year so far. If I keep going at this rate I should probably move to the 250 group - but a lot of this past month or so was reading graphic novels, which go a lot faster for me than other books. So I doubt I'll keep up quite this pace. I'm going to hang out in my group for a while and see how things go.

message 49: by Deborah (last edited Jun 22, 2011 08:52AM) (new)

Deborah | 17 comments I plan to stay at 50 for now and see what happens later in the year. I am sure I can read more but I want to take it slow.

message 50: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (pamelaterry) Actually, I am quite pleased with myself for being on track. This is my first time monitoring myself with a reading goal, and I am doing pretty well :)
