April (clarivel) Hi Everyone!

I hope you are all doing well with your goals! I'm still happy with the goal of 50 books that I have set. I haven't been able to read as much as i would like as of late, so I'm planning on working on this very soon. I need to step it up! 47 more to go!

message 52: by Deanna (new)

Deanna (classmum) | 134 comments I am really please to be doing much better this year. Almost at 70. Unfortunately I am also turning into a bit of a couch potato. I have got to find some way of attaching the book to my elliptical. And being able to turn the pages with out falling off!

message 53: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 561 comments I am happy with my progress so far and am ahead of where I was this time last year: 65 books read so far for my 200 goal. I am hoping to surpass 200 this year, but I am still keeping it as my goal since I will be happy if I just get that far.

When did that happen? They used to allow one hour of free reading in store on the nook. They took that away?

And I'm glad you bought your first graphic novel. Yay! Which one is it? Glad you're enjoying it.

Shari*LoveMiKindle* I'm at 49/200 which is a little off pace for me but I'm keeping my goal for now.

message 57: by Ann aka Iftcan (new)

Ann aka Iftcan (iftcan) | 394 comments I'm at 119/365, so I'm slightly ahead of pace. But, this summer and then in the fall I will be hosting family, so will get no reading at all done then. And my Mum's health (especially mental) is so fragile that I never know when I'm going to get called in to take her to dr's, emergency rooms, or just sit with her in the Nursing Home and try to calm her down. While I MIGHT be able to do some reading in one or two of those places, it will/would be very spasmatic and sparse. So I'm actually happy to be slightly (8 books) ahead of where I should be right now. I'm hoping to be able to get another few books ahead, but have no idea if/when I'm going to be able to do that. But, to quote Shakespear, "Onward MacDuff." and all that. :o)

message 58: by Jill (new)

Jill | 70 comments I'm right on track with my challenge of 100 books. I'm reading more print books this year. I've made an additional challenge of reading books about other countries so I can broaden my understanding of the globe.

That sucks about the B&N. The one in my town is still cozy enough. There's an indie store closer to my home actually, and my bro went in there to do some in store reading one day. But when they saw that he wasn't buying the book, they slyly suggested why can't he check out the library. Ouch! So much for supporting indie bookstores, when they can't even be welcoming enough. I'd hate it if bookstores transform into hard cold places. After Borders, we don't need more disappointments.

message 60: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (pamelaterry) I am actually ahead of my goal of 50 books for the year. New to GR, I didn't want to set my goal too high. However, I am finding out that since I am tracking my pages read, books, read, etc., I obviously have been reading a lot more than I thought :) Love it!! My TBR list grows daily !!

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) Just started my first challenge this week so no progress really yet. Going to try and read 100 books in 2011. Only at 8 books so far. To be fair was in a reading slump this year until now.

message 62: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I am actually ahead of schedule for my 100 goal! First time for me to be ahead in anything! LOL

Same here, I have read 11 so far as life happens and I can't read as much as I would like.

message 64: by [deleted user] (new)

As of April 18th, I've read 44 books and I'm thinking about changing my goal from 100 to 150. My personal goal is (to be precise) 130, and it's closer to 150 than 100 :)

message 65: by Nadine (new)

Nadine | 252 comments Oh my, I thought I was fast with my 50 books so far, but seems like I am one of the slow ones here! My official goal is 120, which I am ahead of. But I hope to get close to 150.

message 66: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) I think I will be passing my goal. I've already passed my halfway mark.

Only on GR, right. In real life, if you told most people you read 50 books in 4 months their head would explode. They'd confess embarrassing (to us) things like they only read magazines or that they don't think they've read 50 books in their whole life.

I go through that often! I've started to lie about the number of books I read. People think I have no life. I mean, since I don't watch much TV and don't stand idly in lines, all that time would certainly be put to good use, right?

message 69: by Nadine (new)

Nadine | 252 comments Yes if one would watch tv the time we read, no one would comment. I don't feel like I don't do a lot of other stuff as well at all!

message 70: by Anna (new)

Anna (aknas22) | 43 comments I think I'll be passing my goal since I'm at 75 books right now and my goal is 120. The 2011 Reading Challenge is really neat for helping me keep track.

message 71: by Athira (new)

Athira (Reading on a Rainy Day) (readingonarainyday) Yay, Anna! I'm glad this challenge is helping you keep track of the books and the count!

message 72: by Lisa S (new)

Lisa S (kasey_k_fan) My goal is 225 books and I just finished 144 last night.

i was sitting in class reading today (going to a class/seminar thing for work) and the instructor walked in, looked at the book I was reading and said another one (cause it was different from the other one) and I was just like, well, I have like 3 in my bag in progress...and he just looked at me like i was nuts

message 74: by Athira (new)

Athira (Reading on a Rainy Day) (readingonarainyday) Lol, Dee! That's just sooo funny! I get that all the time, and that disapproving nod of the head? Just so great to get that look!

Nancy H | 561 comments Dee wrote: "of course I was reading Confessions of a Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated at the time...lol!"

That is funny. I know that exact look, though, since I am usually reading 5 or 6 books at a time, and have several with me most of the time. You can tell who the "real" readers are, though - the ones who "get" it when you say that you want to read the one that you are in mood for at the moment....

I don't think I even know anyone like that. There are some friends who have "acclimated" to my reading habits, but no one whose eyes sparkle with mine when they see a book.

I remember I met this lady last year when my brother was in a hospital. There was Shutter Island lying on my brother's bed. There were quite a few people in the room, but the moment she saw the book, she walked straight to it, checked out the title, read the back, put the book down and then acknowledged the people in the room. I thought I might die of happiness. If she were a guy, I might even have proposed to her/him. (Yeah, I was thinking this, even when my brother was lying in the bed, though I should say he was doing good.)

I love it! I work the front desk at an Urgent Care, and one of the first things I notice when I call someone to the desk to register (ok, aside from checking for blood or a heart attack!) is what they are reading...we talk authors, talk e-readers, etc. Its a great conversation starter!

message 81: by Nancy H (new)

Nancy H | 561 comments I am very, very lucky - a few years ago, I started a faculty reading club at my school in order to get the teachers to read some of the same YA books the kids were reading --- it has been a massive success, and to some people's way of thinking, I have created "reading monsters" - now there is a whole group of us who talk about books all the time, read everything we can get our hands on, and constantly recommend books for each other. It is absolutely great! I am trying to get them all to join Good Reads, but so far, haven't had much luck. They just haven't gotten how much fun it is to talk about books here!

What a fantastic thing you created! Reading is so important, let alone just plain fun! I remember back in elementary school a teacher telling my parents (avid readers as well!) that if a student can read well, they will do better in all subjects. And its true! You should link up with my sister, Ginger Beasley...she LOVES reading, and talking about books. She is on goodreads. She owns a Kindle and reads paper books as well.

Her name is Ginger Beasley...are we able to recommend friends like one can do on Facebook? I just got home from work, and will be going to be soon...but will definitely try to find out how to connect you two in the morning. Happy reading!

Renee (pontiacgal501) | 36 comments I'm going to stick with my goal of 50. So far I've read 18. Hopefully I'll make it to 50.

message 86: by Jennifer C (new)

Jennifer C I may need to up my goal. I am about to finish my 56th book of the year and my goal was to read 100. I may have up my goal to 120...

message 87: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished #103. If I keep it up, I might hit 200 at the end of the year...

I'll be starting a new thread on July 1st for the next review.
