Sashana The start of spring signifies many things: a change in the weather, the blossoming of sweet smelling flowers, and,of course, cleaning. Though we enjoy all of these things, for this challenge we will only focus on the cleaning.

Timeline
This challenge will begin on March 20, 2011 and end on June 20, 2011. This is when Spring officially begins and ends.

The Cleaning
We wanted to stay true to the challenge name but we were faced with a very difficult question: How does one apply cleaning to books? After much thinking and deliberation we decided to focus on Goodread's bookshelves and TBR lists. Anyone will tell you that much of cleaning involves organization. In fact, some may say that it's the most important part. The objective of this portion of the challenge is to:

*Make new bookshelves and get rid of the irrelevant ones.
*Slowly go through all of your books and move them to their
appropriate shelves.
*While going through your to-read books delete the ones that no longer
interest you. (You may be surprised by how many books no longer
interest you).

Be sure to post the name of the shelves you created or deleted below. As with all of our challenges we want to see your progress.

The Reading
It wouldn't be a reading challenge without, well... reading. While talking with some of our members we realized that many of us have a lot of unread books and lengthly TBR list. We wanted to help our members remedy this problem, or at least give them the motivation to start tackling their neglected books. The objective of this portion of the challenge is to:

*Make a list of all the books you own but are unread.
*After 'cleaning' up your TBR book shelf make a list of the books that you
want to read the most.
(Tip: You may want to look at the ones that have been on the list the longest)
*After completing the list making process, come up with a game plan to
read as many books as possible.
*Read!

Be sure to list all of the books you read for this challenge below. Let us know if they were pre-owned or on your TBR list

The Final Step
Have fun! Obvious as it may sound, we want our members to have fun with this challenge. The word clean is stress inducing and we know first hand that organizing your Goodreads bookshelves can be a daunting task. We advise you to take each step in small doses for the most effective results.

Optional

We want to know if this challenge was useful to our members. Please consider doing the pre and post survey if you participate. Thank You!

Sashana Wow that's quite a lot, Jessica. I'm glad that you're getting into the 'cleaning' spirit.

message 11: by Shay (new)

Shay | 923 comments I got rid of no books from the TBR shelf and ended up requesting more books from the library. I don't think I'm quite getting into the spirit of this. I actually saw a book in the TBR that reminded me of another book, so I actually have added to my TBR shelf.

message 12: by Sashana (new)

Sashana Lol, you don't have to delete anything if you don't want to, Shay. The goal is to go through your shelves and see what you want to keep or take off (kind of liking cleaning your closet).

Do I have to create more shelves? I actualy don't really like havign a lot of shelves and I find I don't really look at them. How many books do you currently have on your TBR list?
486

How many bookshelves do you have?
149 (including exclusive shelves)

How many unread books do you own (consider eBooks, paperback, and hardcover)?
I don't have time to actually count them all, but I'm going to estimate about 100.

How many books do you want to read for this challenge? My goal is going to be to read 50 books from either my to-read shelf or books that I own but have not yet read. I don't think I am going to do any "cleaning" of my shelves, because even though I have a lot I quite like it that way and can't think of any shelves I would want to get rid of. I always shelf books immediately after I finish reading them or while I'm reading them, so I don't have any unshelved books that I need to organize either.

Goal: Read 50 books from my TBR list or from my owned but unread list

1. On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta (was on TBR) - read 23/03/11
2. The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness (was on TBR) - read 29/03/11

2/50 Complete

Books I removed from my TBR because I'm not longer interested:
Checkered Fences
Tracing Iris
Hex Hall

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 5588 comments I'm still organizing my shelves. I don't have patience to do it for very long.

I only added 1 shelf because I don't want a whole bunch of shelves and the time it would take to put 900+ books on a whole bunch of different shelves would use up valuable reading time.

But I did create a Read Soon shelf in which I put some books that have been lanquishing in my TBR pile a long time. As well as a few for authors I haven't tried yet and have on PBS WL. I really should read the one I have before I pay a credit to acquire another for someone I end up not liking.

message 31: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) I'm in-- I actually started three self-challenges this year designed to accomplish whittling down the collection. They'll fit the purpose here nicely. They are

1) Batting Cleanup Challenge-- this one is designed to finish up authors I've already read most of. I chose six or eight authors and am setting myself to finish reading their backlists.

2) Author Focus challenge -- this one is designed for authors I've read a few of, but own a lot of. I chose 4 writers and set myself to read at least 10 books by each. (ultimately this year's "author focus" writer could become next year's "batting cleanup" author.)

3) "read one" challenge-- this one is for writers I've never read but have somehow still managed to collect several books that were written by them. The challenge is to read one by each of a short list of these authors and if I don't like it, donate everything I own by that author and clear some space.

For your spring cleaning challenge I went ahead and made a shelf for each of my private challenges and loaded 'em up.

How many books do you currently have on your TBR list? 7k plus, but they aren't all necessarily books I own: some are just books I eventually want to read.
How many bookshelves do you have? 6, of which 3 were created this morning for this challenge.
How many unread books do you own (consider eBooks, paperback, and hardcover)? Probably 3k.
How many books do you want to read for this challenge? Well, my private challenges were for all year so there are like, 80 books there. No way I'll knock all that out in three months. Let's say 20 and see where I get!

You have pretty good and well managed shelves already :)I am never good at managing them so the easiest ones were the months I have read and the ones I have owned...

Alicia I just removed a couple more books from my TBR that I don't really plan to read in order to "tidy it up": Bones of Faerie, Red and The Devil Inside. Also removed Jesus Potter Harry Christ, which I don't really remember adding to my list. I think it may have been slipped onto my TBR on a certain saturday night when I may or may not have been drinking and found the book funny enough to laugh about for a good 10 minutes. The cover is pure gold though, so I was a bit loathe to delete it, haha!

Sans Looks like you guys are doing well on this challenge. I did a bit of TBR spring cleaning myself but I haven't deleted more than a handful of titles. Er, out of the 2,492 on my to read list. And my 724 wishlist copy. Yes, I have 3,216 books in Mt. TBR. I think it's not a single mountain, more of a range at this point. ~_~
