I love this concept and how everyone has been so good bouncing ideas off of one another. I'm not sure how much I'll be able to do since May and June are really busy for me but certainly willing to give it a try.

I'm in the same boat Alyson. But we'll see. I am done with my grad school so I have more time. My problem is I can never seem to stick to the challenge lists I make.
I say mythology should count as religious. If I wasn't christian mythology would be my second choice.
I think the challenge looks great so far, Amy. Nice work. I can't wait. I got sidetracked, as you say, on Kristen's challenge too. *sigh* I always start out so strong ...

Great list Kristen. My method is to just pick a book I like or want to read, and then pray it fits into the challenge somewhere. Probably a bad strategy since I never really seem to get a whole lot of points, but it's still enjoyable.

I always like to make a list, too. I sometimes follow it, sometimes not. But the listmaking is fun :)
My question is, if we don't read every letter from the name of the month (say I only read an "A" book and an "L" book), do I still get the points or do I have to read a book per letter to get the points? I have way too many books from state-generated lists to read for book talks to have a complete agenda mapped out. Can I just record the books read that fit the criteria?I never plan on winning these challenges, but it is fun.
You get points for each letter. So if you only read A and L then you'll get five points per book. So I would definitely read what you would normally read and if it fits any part of the challenge, post it and you'll get the points.
Hey all! I'm new to the group but looking forward to the challenge. I had a clarifying question - did we ever decide on how many points genres would be? And that you can only apply one for points once?

If the challenge does go like this I can see myself attempting to participate in this one. It sounds kind of fun.
I think we are pretty close to the final challenge. I haven't had an changes in the last day or so and I"ll post the "official" on Sunday.

Kristen.......I was looking over your list and saw The Candy Shop War on there. You're going to love it. I read it last summer and really enjoyed it.Okay everyone, official rules will be posted tomorrow. Feel free to post your lists! I'm going to make one, although I"m quite confident I wont' be sticking to it. LOL.
Question- In the rules, it says that you can read as many books per letter as you would like, with no limit to points. BUT, then it also says 200 pts maximum. Which is it?

Ashley.........I have to go back and change the scoring a bit. I tried to make it more defined, with chances for extra points. So doing the main challenge can earn two hundred points, not counting bonuses. But I think the scoring (at this moment) is off because I've been changing the challenge as we've discussed, not the points. So I"ll post the final version with all the changes and fixes tomorrow. Scoring included.
CHALLENGE 8: RULES AND SCORINGRead over everything carefully!
APRIL TO JUNE CHALLENGE
1. The challenge will begin on April 1 at 12:00am local time and will end on June 30 at 11:59pm.
2. All books must be YA or Juvenile Fiction.
3. All books must be at least 100 pages or more in length.
4. Re-reads count.
5. Audio books and electronic books, such as Kindle count but page counts will be according to what Goodreads has on their site.
6. For the letter A, you may use A/An ONE time. After you have used it, please omit it from the rest of the titles. The does not count in the title, so omit those. For example, The Julian Game would just count as "Julian Game."
7. For letter Y, it would be preferable to read a book STARTING with Y, but if you can't find one, a Y anywhere in the title is acceptable.
8. Spell out each letter of the month (ex. A-P-R-I-L; book titles must begin with each letter of the month; ex. A-Amazing Grace, P-Pirates,etc).
9. Point Values are listed next to each task. There are opportunities for additional points so please read carefully!
10. Questions, concerns, comments? Let us know. We can problem solve together!

50 point bonus for finishing the entire challenge
5 points bonus per genre (each may only be used once; please follow the posted genre list) Genres will be considered as bonus points. So you do NOT have to use them if you don't want to.
For each 10 point section, you may read an additional challenge book for five points a piece.
THE CHALLENGE
Part 1: April (55 points total)
A. Read one book for each letter of the month of April. (5 points each)
B. Read a book that celebrates the Earth. (10 points)
C. Read a humorous book in honor of April Fool's Day (10 points)
D. Read a book where the main character is a patriot (10 points)
Part 2: May (45 Points total)
a. Read one book for each letter of the month of May. (5 points each)
b. Read a book that has a flower name in it's title. (10 points)
c. Read a book related to physical education or sports (10 points)
d. Read a book having to do with some form of transportation (10 points)
Part 3: June (50 points total)
a. Read one book for each letter of the month of June. (5 points each)
b. Read a book that has best friends (any gender) as the main characters. (10 points)
c. Read a book with some form of candy in the title or having to do with candy (10 points)
d. Read a book celebrating the flag or America (10 points
Total Points Challenge: 200 points overall including a 50 point bonus for completion. Additional points may be earned based on genres or additional books read.

So, if we read more than one book that begins with a letter we need (read three books that start with P, or something) then is it 3 points, like it is with the challenge going on now?
Oh, also, can you cross over challenge points? Like use The Perks of Being a Wallflower for April (5 pts) and also for May's book that uses a flower name in the title (10 pts)?
Actually, for this challenge, no extra points for extra books. Scoring is as it's written. I took out the extra points trying to make it more of a set number of points. Only extra points go for genres and then finishing the challenge. You don't have to read the books specifically in the month we're in. So you can read out of order, however you want to, just make sure the title/book fits the rules.

I think since there is extra points other ways, don't worry about what I said about a definite amount of points... This challenge doesn't really fit for a definite amount of points...
Originally I had that in Kellee, and then you mentioned you'd like a more closed challenge. If you guys want to be able to read for extra points, that's totally fine with me. What does everyone else want to do? I was thinking if we do the extra points, we should just keep the point level the same (ex. first a book, five points; second a book, five points).
Amy, I think you should stick to the extra books for the challenges are an extra 10 points; do not give extra points for books included in the original task of books for each letter of the month. That is one thing that makes this challenge different.Also, if a book is used to complete ONE task/challenge and genre, it CANNOT also be counted for another task, e.g., if you read a book for the letter "L" this book cannot count for any extra challenges , e.g., a, b, c etc. This seems only fair and of course one of the ideas about the challenges is to encourage reading more books in more genres.
That does mean that a challenge book (a, b, c, etc) can also fulfill a genre slot and garner a participant 15 pts.
How does that sound?
Whoo-hoo! I'm ready to get started. Just something to say, I always start with my YA-to-be-read list and see what would fit, then I start filling in. It is so much fun for me. I'll be listing my list soon (oooh! we're getting close to a start date!). One of the neat things about seeing everyone's list is that I get to check out books I might not have considered before.
Is everyone okay with posting the standings every Friday? If I can't do every Friday, would every other Friday be okay? Let me know what you think. {Amy, I especially want to know what you want. I will be leaving any questions up to you and I'll just try to keep track.}

What does everyone els..."I know I am being the confusing one and I think things are being lost in translation :) I just mentioned that at the beginning, but what you came up with was fabulous and wasn't a closed challenge with the genre bonuses and such, so if we're not going to do one, you might as well go all out :) I just think that if we can do doubles for some and not others it would be confusing for all, but ultimately you are the final person because you are the one willing to do this which we all appreciate so much :) And I really don't want to step on your toes and I didn't mean to in the first place... sorry :( I really think your original was fabulous and you should go with it and ignore me :)
Lydia..........not sure I'm understanding what you mean. Did you mean give ten points extra for books not included in the original tasks? I'm confused! Sorry! I'm good with every Friday but I think it might be a lot of work to keep up with everything all week and then post. So maybe we can post standings at least two maybe three times per week? I can totally keep track of the scores if that's easier! I don't mind!One book per task, can't double. So if you used it for A for example, it can't be used as any other part. Each book gets one use. The only exception is you can use a book for the letter A AND for a genre. Genres are one time per genre.

I don't think it is a big deal, though, if you let the task include reading more than one A book or P book for 3 or 5 points, but ultimately it is your decision :)
We'll keep it at five points. Easier calculations. I hate doing three's cause it gives you odd totals.
Amy, okay you can keep the scores. If you look at the past challenges, you will see that the scores are not usually posted more often, but this might work out extremely well. I'll assume you have your own excel sheet. Glad you are having fun with this. Such an excellent job.
Nope, haven't made an excel sheet yet. Guess I such get on with that huh? I was actually toying with the idea of just keeping everything in a notebook so I could update scores if I'm at work (and get a minute). I'm computer savvy to a point. Have you already created one Lydia? I don't want to pull the scoring away from you if you've gone to the trouble to set everything up!Thanks Lydia. You can read more than one book per letter. The point level will stay the same for the ease of scoring. So first A book is five points, second is five points, etc. Then the ten point tasks are as you stated in your post. First book is ten points, each additional is five points.
Can anyone help me out with The Dark and Hollow Places by Carrie Ryan. It is an absolute MUST that I read it in April, and I need to make it fit at 384 pages... I figure it could iffily (is that a word?) fit into two of the categories, and I wanted to get opinions. It could be a best friends things (Elias and Annah were bffs according to The Dead-Tossed Waves), or it could fit in the patriot section (Elias goes off to join The Recruiters, which is like the military in their world. Thoughts? Has anyone read it yet?
I just finished it. I think it could fit in the best friends b/c Catcher and Gabry are friends and so are Elias and Annah. The things they all do for each other you'd only do for a best friend.
Thanks Kellee! I was just going to look it up. Karis...I would suggest using it for the category that would be harder to find a book for. JMO!
