Marina Fontaine I never saw Bella as a victim. She was stubborn to the point of stupidity, reckless in her determination to get what she wanted. And what she wanted was Edward. She lies, cheats and literally nearly kills herself trying to get him. The reason she always needs to be rescued is because her determination and risk-taking gets ahead of her physical strength, not because she's a fragile flower. She doesn't just sit in the corner waiting for others to decide her fate. She doesn't settle for safety of Jacob who would certainly take care of her. She doesn't even "whine" in the regular sense- this is a 1st person story, so she tells of the pain she feels inside, but does not share it with the outside world. I think what bothers modern feminists is that she chose getting a man as her goal rather than something else. (Then again, Little Mermaid tale bothers them too.) You can question her choices, but there's no way she can be called a weakling or a victim.

Very well stated! One thing that I dislike about Bella is that she is so unwilling to bend. she didn't want to go to University, and that was that. Nothing would sway her. She wanted to have sex with Edward as a human, and she would - even at the risk of her life if he lost control. She wanted to be a vampire, and she would con any member of his family into changing her, if he wouldn't do it.

Even the little things: the prom, the birthday party (although, in hindsight, a bad idea), Alice's makeovers; she had to be cajoled into agreeing. All so that feelings wouldn't be hurt. she finally gets it in the very end, with the wardrobe that Alice installed in the house.

Honestly, if she wasn't so headstrong, then Edward and Jacob would have had an easier time of it!

Well, like all the other fiction books one might read.
How are we using LotR in the real world?
As source for quotes and silly band names.

But has anyone ever considered that he might one day need it to find his way up mount doom?
Probably not!

In the end they would still much rather rely on "Mountain climbing for dummies" when time comes. ;)

I'm just tired of having to defend the reasons why I don't like it.Apparently my saying it's a bad book hurt my friends feelings. She asked me if I had read it and when I replied that I started to but put it down because I just couldn't get into it she launched into whole fanatical rant about why there must have been something wrong with me cos it's the best book ever written.I told her obviously it wasn't because it couldn't keep me interested. She pressed me for more and more reasons and in the end i just launched into a list of all the things I found bad about it. This made her very upset and she stopped talking to me. The funny thing is I never intended to get into that rant.I have no problem with her liking it as I understand that it is a matter of taste but what I found infuriating was that my opinion is apparently invalid just because I don't like something that is popular.she was the one who forced me to give more and more reasons why I didn't like it because each point I originally made just wasn't acceptable. There's nothing wrong with being a twilight fan, but some fanatics take it way to far and then wonder why other people get tired of hearing it.

There's nothing wrong with being a Twilight fan! There could be much worse things, I'm sure! I loved when my students were into Twilight because that meant they were into books. Enjoy!

Well, according to your point, we should read no fiction books at all. Because essentially your point extends to all fiction. But we don't read fiction for use in the real world. We read for ENJOYMENT.

I personally, didn't like the Twilight series, but I don't see that as a reason to insult those who did.

message 609: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh and in relation to some of the lists...here's my twopence worth....

CONTROL. I wouldn't want my boyfriend to protect me with or without my knowledge. Everything I have in life I have achieved by myself so why would I ever need another person to do anything for me.I know there's only one person I ever have to rely on, myself, and I've never let me down before. So that's why I could not relate to Edward protecting Bella and I don't see how their relationship would have survived if she had been a more assertive, strong woman.

SEX. okay so they have sex when they're married, which apparently is the right way to do it.I would die before I said that it is wrong to have sex before marriage. It's my body and I will do with it as I choose. When reading Twilight I felt like I was being hit over the head with Christian messages and I find it insulting.I would never tell my son or daughter that sex out marriage is wrong.I will teach them about safe sex.

PROTECTION. Apparently this is what women want from their husband or boyfriend.I DON'T WANT IT. And I am NOT weak. When reading twilight all I could think is that if every woman grew up in meyerland what a terrible world we would have. Consider Queen Elizabeth I who spoke the immortal words 'I shall have one mistress here and no master'. I can't bear the idea that all a woman should want and need is all tied up in a man to love them. I also find it insulting that a man should fall in love with a woman who has no individual opinions responsibilities or pleasures apart from him.

Come to think of it the book is pretty sexist towards men. The only believable male character is Charlie and his ungrateful little cow of a daughter does nothing but moan about him.

Also the book takes it for granted that every character is straight, like with the whole imprinting thing. Apparently the baby will grow up and fall in love with him.I just wanted to scream...BUT WHAT IF SHE IS SEXUALLY ATTRACTED TO OTHER WOMEN!!!!

I finally snapped after reading a book about Emily Davison.

I know this makes me a bad woman in meyerland...oh well.

Gerd Suzanne wrote: "Also the book takes it for granted that every character is straight, like with the whole imprinting thing..."

Well, that's what every society does, pretty much every one raises his children assuming for them to be "straight", very few will tell their daughter that "one day you may find your own Prince or Princess to marry and raise children with".

Suzanne wrote: "Apparently the baby will grow up and fall in love with him. I just wanted to scream...BUT WHAT IF SHE IS SEXUALLY ATTRACTED TO OTHER WOMEN!!!!..."

Remember Jacob claiming that he imprinted on Bella?
Obviously this whole imprinting affair isn't real, it's just something they believe in, more of a tradition than anything else, and one that they are not entirely sure about how it works themselves - it's not foolproof!
She might grow up and imprint herself on another, or none.
And then Jacob would have to go find another "Soulmate".

message 612: by Marina (new) - rated it 4 stars

Marina Fontaine Jacob THOUGHT he imprinted on Bella. But he didn't KNOW what imprinting felt like until Renesmee was born and he felt "a million cables" pulling him towards her, or something to that effect. Imprinting is a special gift (or curse, depending on how you look at it) that werewolves have to identify their soulmate. If Renesmee were gay, or if she was meant to fall in love with someone else, she would not be Jacob's solumate and he would not imprint on her. By the way, Renesmee is not a werewolf, so she would not "imprint," she would just fall in love with Jacob the way a human or vampire would.

I'm a huge Twilight saga fan! So to me there is nothing wrong with being a Twilighter. You have to ignore all the Twilight bashers because they're just expressing their opinions.

I think Stephenie Meyer is amazing and her books were amazing. The movies... eh. I've got them and I watched them and I liked them because it brought my favourite characters to life but they will never be as good as the book but you know what? They don't have to be.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and when their opinions are actually bashing the people who like the books and even the author well, I choose to ignore those ones.

Some of the opposing opinions are actually insightful to read because I get to see why they didn't like it and in some cases I can see their points. The ones who call us "stupid" for liking them, well, they're being rude for no good reason. It's uncalled for.

Bottom line... No there is nothing wrong with being a Twilighter. Twilight Rocks!!

message 623: by N (new) - rated it 2 stars

N Whether or not you like Twilight, that's your own thing. I'll admit, I used to be a fan of Twilight. I used to get all hyped up when they were going to make a movie out of it. A fellow friend and I used to gush over our dream cast, and then 'it' happened...

I think my main problem with the series is the hype that goes into it (by hype, I mean the people who think this is the 'best series ever written' against every other piece of literature ever written and refuse to acknowledge the arguments against their claims), which I don't believe it deserves.

At its core level, I can see the appeal and the entertainment value it holds. And sure it's only fiction, but Meyer also heavily infers some pretty disturbing subtext and messages into the book series (misogyny, superficiality, co-dependency, justifying obsession and confusing it with love, just to name a few) which turned me off much later on. And her prose isn't exactly something I can see being praised for its literary credibility either...

Is it wrong to be passionate about a book you like? Of course not! (I mean, take the preceding book phenomena of Harry Potter...) I think the media played a big part in enforcing that stereotype of any Twilight fan being the equivalent of a rabid, teenage girl who is so blindingly close-minded and obsessed with this series. I know people who are fans of Twilight and are NOTHING like what I just described.

Personally for me, I wouldn't have a problem if you likde Twilight. Just as long as you don't threaten to beat me to a pulp if I argue my reasons as to why I don't like it.

However, I place almost full blame on Twilight for some of the load of YA paranormal books I've read - which just grates my nerves to no end.

Mansi I agree with the second paragraph and the last part that's crossed out!
Good observing :)

message 625: by Adria (new) - added it

Adria I don't think that people have a problem with people liking the Twilight series. I just think some (including me) think its a tad bit annoying when people are obsessed with the series, so much in fact that if someone else doesn't like it, they take offense. I say whatever floats your boat. I like the Twilight series, they are good books for what they are. But I don't think they are the greatest books ever written by any means.

message 626: by Mansi (new) - rated it 1 star

Mansi Yes, I also agree with that.

message 627: by Mansi (new) - rated it 1 star

Mansi tehe~!

message 628: by N (new) - rated it 2 stars

N Kymberly - no it wasn't purely for the hype surrounding the books (I'm so sorry if I wasn't being clear on that point!) that made me dislike the series later on. I think it was because of the several essays and arguments my friend used to show me which made me take a step back, and evaluate what the series was really saying. If that made any sense.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with it at all and that's coming from someone who only rated it 2 stars. Just an example of differing opinions. Different books really speak to and connect with different people.

Personally, I love seeing books light up someone else's life. Twilight missed the mark with me, but I still know the feeling. I LOVE the feeling an awesome read provides. So, while I may only rate Twilight 2 stars, I rate your starting comment in this conversation 5. I love the feeling so much that I love witnessing other people experience it.

There's everything beautiful and nothing wrong with expressing love and passion for a story that spoke to you.

message 631: by Marina (new) - rated it 4 stars

Marina Fontaine @Saronai- Thank you! You don't have to like something to be able to respect that someone else does. Some people almost consider it a moral/intellectual failing if you are a Twilight fan.

For what it's worth, I enjoy thoughtful critique of books I like. It sometimes helps me verbalize why I like them. I case of Twilight, the discussions of Bella being "weak" or "stupid" actually made me realize how the opposite was true. While reading the books, I kept feeling she was a total brat most of the time, but after thinking about it some more I saw that she was actually a strong woman going after her goal in whatever way possible.
