Petra X (petra-x) She came back :-) I called 'tuna water' and she came with a huge bloody mess on her neck. Looked like pus and blood. She let me stroke her back and I got some spray antiseptic on the wound, just, but then she took off before I could even close the door.

She came back tonight and hid under my son's bed (I didn't know that until about half an hour ago) and is now sitting cleaning herself on the sofa next to me. There isn't much point to trying to spray her again as she's licking everywhere. I don't want her to take off again either.

Thank you all for your good wishes I was very, very worried about her.

message 252: by MissJessie (new)

MissJessie I am SO GLAD!!!!!.

Can you maybe wash it off gently with a warm cloth while holding her with the door closed? Just to see what it is?

Maybe you'll sleep tonight.

message 253: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) She crept into bed with me this morning for a cuddle and seems back to herself. She's licked it clean and I have sprayed it with more antiseptic.

I used to be able to hold cats in a towel and do what I needed to, but Lily is 15.5 lb and it is very difficult to hold a cat that size who doesn't want to sit still and has claws.

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) I'm *so* glad she's back and acting more like herself now! Yay!!!

message 255: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) She's gone again, but at least I know she's a lot better and eating. It has been a really worrying week. Cats are just the same as family, as people, just because they aren't human doesn't make them less valued and loved.

message 256: by MissJessie (new)

MissJessie Perhaps she's just in the mood for a Spring Break :)

I'm glad she's feeling better; and you are right, I love my cats as much as I love any person except maybe my DH and he feels the same way. The only love money can buy, as they say. And it's unconditional.

message 257: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) She came back but the wound isn't dry. I can't hold her long enough to get her into a cat carrier so I am just holding an antiseptic-soaked dressing against it for a minute or two when I can. I think I will go and get her antibiotics tomorrow and then starts the battle to get her to take them. She is such a self-willed madame and has nothing against committing domestic violence at all.

message 258: by Florence (Lefty) (new)

Florence (Lefty) MacIntosh Great news! I'm so happy for you Petra. I've got dogs, they're the opposite. When they're hurting (like something sticking in a paw) they'll come search me out & look at me with pleading eyes. That independence that cats are famous for causes all kinds of grief. I'm sure she'll be fine, nine lives and all...

Oh Petra, I am so sorry! Years ago I had a cat with a similar condition and it turned out to be an infected bight on the neck from another unknown animal. I sure hope you find your kitty and are able to get her in for some care.

message 260: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) It could be that. Sounds very likely. She is back and eating and being quite cuddly but she doesn't really look happy. I am going to get her some antibiotics tomorrow morning, I don't know if I will be able to actually take her to the AS.

I'm so happy you have her back!! Hopefully you can nurse her back to health and happiness.

message 262: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) She has a big raw spot under her chin. I've been bathing it and putting antibiotic ointment on and will get oral antibiotics at lunchtime tomorrow. It does seem the wound is drying at the edges. Scab rather than crust I hope.

Florence (Lefty) MacIntosh I just ran across this quote & thought I'd share. It's particularly funny because so unexpected who said it.
“Once I had a rose named after me and I was very flattered. But I was not pleased to read the description in the catalogue: "No good in a bed, but fine up against a wall.”
Eleanor Roosevelt!

Cheryl S. | 3501 comments This will give away my age, but at this point who cares! I was born the day FDR died. One of my uncles, who had been in a terrible motorcycle accident and always had memory problems after that could never remember my name, but could remember my birthday. By some brain connection known only to him, he always called me Eleanor.

MissJessie Petra, how's the kitty?

message 270: by MissJessie (new)

MissJessie Is this an unfortunate question due to my missing out on a message? I hope not.....

message 271: by Petra X (last edited Mar 20, 2013 05:36AM) (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Kitty is on the mend, thank you. The wound under her neck is getting smaller, but unfortunately some of it is still weepy. I think she got bit as I see a deep hole which looks like a tooth mark. I got some oral antibiotics for her and today is the second day of them. It was very tough linking up with the Animal Shelter guy to actually get them, endless phonecalls and then no one there when I went, otherwise she would have been on them since Sat.

She has been eating normally. She caught a lizard and ate it, leaving it's head on the bedroom floor, so she's back to hunting now.

Lily says thank you for all the interest and that she was trying to type a message back herself but her the keys are too big for her paws. (view spoiler)

Cheryl S. | 3501 comments This must be a bad time for cats as my big guy, Riggins, is sick. He had a spell of vomiting about 10 days ago and after a visit to the vet she decided he was constipated and we took measures to correct that. Today he's been vomiting again and has been hiding under my bed all day. I'm using the meds I was given in case this happened again and am hoping he is back to his usual sunny self by tomorrow. I just feel so sorry for him as he looks miserable. He's usually very social and comes to visit me many times a day so this is an abrupt change.

message 273: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I hope he gets better tonight and can spend tomorrow doing what cats do best, napping. How big is Riggins?

message 274: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Hope your cat is doing better, Petra. Sounds like she had an abscess. The antibiotics should help a lot.

Cheryl, I hope your cat is feeling better soon!

message 275: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I think she had a bite Sheila. When the goo cleared enough I could see at least one deep toothmark, or at least it looked like a toothmark.

I think she had a fight with Arthur, an intact tomcat who I used to feed and allow to sleep here sometimes but banned because he was such a suck-up to one of my cats and such a bastard to the other. Also he miaowed all the time which got on my nerves. He's the only cat around here and she probably wouldn't let him in.

message 276: by Sheila (new)

Sheila Yes, bites from other cats are the most common cause of a cat getting an abscess. My husband is a veterinarian, and he sees this kind of infection in cats regularly. Some of the wounds can become REALLY swollen (golf ball to small lemon size) and if they burst they can leave a big gaping hole once the pus all drains out (YUCK, I know!) :o)

Here are some articles on home care if she gets in a cat fight again (though the antibiotics from a vet are always a good bet if you can get them)

message 277: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Oh I forgot your husband was a vet. I would have asked you for advice first.

The abscess was closer to small lemon than golfball. And yes, bigger gaping hole, but its much smaller now and drying. Only a tiny bit is still 'sticky'. She's on antibiotics and I'm putting on a bit of Savlon cream a couple of times a day.

Going to read the articles now.

message 278: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Read the articles. Thank you. I actually did most of it and the ointment kept the scab from forming. I just did what I would have done for my son. She's well on the mend now but I will keep the articles for future reference.

message 279: by MissJessie (new)

MissJessie Those articles were very interesting; I had never seen an abscess on a cat since ours are indoor only. I can see why you were so upset Petra -- very very ugly looking. Poor baby.

message 280: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I couldn't see it mostly because it is right under her chin, first glance at it was terrible, but it's much smaller today and she only clawed me once *cheerful smile* trying to put cream on it and give her antibiotics.

message 281: by MissJessie (new)

MissJessie :) She's on the mend, apparently. Excellent! I hate it when my cats are sick worse then when I am, by far.

message 282: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly Comeau (kimberlykcomeau) | 299 comments I'm way late to this discussion, and am so very glad to hear that Lily's on the mend, Petra. Poor kitty! Poor you! My Sadie is in her mid-teens and I don't like to think of a future without her. I know it's the same for you with Lily. Our cats are dearly loved, comedic family members. (I read the articles on abscess care for future reference, but cringed at the picture. Poor Lily!)

He was weighed at the vet last week. 17.8 pounds. He's a big boy. When the vet took him out of his carrier she went "Whoa! You are a big guy" and had to laugh.

message 284: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Geee, I thought my cat was big at 15.5 lbs, but this last week she has lost a lot of weight. I would love a big 17.8 cat to cuddle though. More cat.

Ya, he's a big load and I better be ready to catch him when he comes running and jumps in my lap. He's a pretty mellow guy except when the neighbor cat comes up on our deck or porch, then he's Mr. Macho.

message 286: by MissJessie (new)

MissJessie LOL. Ditto on the macho for Piet and Elwood when our neighbor cat comes to check out the deck. Hiss and yell and fling themselves at the doors. Hilarious. They would faint if they actually were unimpeded.

BUT if he comes to the basement window and peers in (daily), it's all OK. Little meows, etc. Go figure.

message 287: by MissJessie (new)

MissJessie LOL. Kind of like those unfortunate people who have to have amputations of legs who can still feel their feet even though they are gone. Which would be horrible.

I think males (cats) either go all wussy and soft after de-balling or decide to live on the memories and carry on as usual (less the spraying).

Petra X (petra-x) I just hope they taste nice as they aren't pasta at all but glucomann - rubbery, filling, no taste, but also 0 calories!

message 292: by peg (new)

peg (mcicutti) | 419 comments They look like Japanese noodles I sometimes cook with. The secret is in the sauce or broth you use to flavor them.

peg (mcicutti) | 419 comments Petra X wrote: "What is the texture like?"

The noodles I use are very tender. You have to soak them in hot water for a few minutes, no cooking involved. You have to be careful not to soak them too long or they will get mushy.

message 297: by [deleted user] (new)

That's more text than a cereal box! And it rivals Dr. Bronner's. Now you'll have something to read as you eat your noodles.

That is brilliant. I may order miracle noodles just so I'll get a letter like that too. I'm feeling a tad unappreciated lately.

The ones I eat are dried and wrapped in cellophane. They have no odor. Sounds like you are buying a different kind of noodle.
