Cheryl (cherylllr) Yay! Almost all of these are from Mt. TBR

1) The Colours of Autumn: Don't Tell the Grown-Ups: The Subversive Power of Children's Literature - my edition is red! *DONE* - pretty good if you like literary criticism or want to know more about folktales and/or authors like Beatrix Potter, Lewis Carroll, or William Mayne.

2) International Women‘s Day: Girls Think of Everything: Stories of Ingenious Inventions by Women *DONE* more interesting than I thought it would be - great for classrooms but also for families or even interested adults, and many of the illustrations were neat little works of art.

3) Saint Patrick‘s Day: Celebrate with the Irish - Airman, by Eoin Colfer who is Irish. - update - had to give up on Airman as I did not like it, checked out a Maeve Binchy story collection instead. *DONE* The Return Journey was a sweet collection and most of the stories couldn't quite have been about anyone else but the Irish.

4) Australian Labour Day: Working Men: Stories Fourteen stories that explore the spectrum... *DONE* quite literary but interesting.

5) Celebrate Dr Seuss‘ birthday on March 2nd! Borgel *DONE* - another cute funny adventure from Pinkwater

6) REDUCE - Read a book from your TBR shelf Howl's Moving Castle *DONE*

7) RE-USE - Re-read an old favourite The Princess Bride *DONE* - Didn't like it as much as I did when young as Buttercup is just too weak & daft. The 30th anniversary edition is fun with all the extra 'layers' of framing story and appendices.

8) RECYCLE - Read any book from the library - TBD, depending on my other groups' group reads. *DONE* Read "Is Sex Necessary?" the classic by Thurber and White.

9) The Ides of March - Read a novel with a murder or assassination in the plot. My husband recommended James' Patterson's "Trial" to me. *DONE* Eww. Very murderous.

10) The days are getting shorter Nebula Award Stories: 1 changed my mind - someone sent me a link to Arthur C Clarke's short story "The Nine Billion Name of God" and I read it, so, *DONE*

Jacinta Hoare | 62 comments Hello all, now that I have managed to get through a reasonable list for the Summer Challenge I will nominate some books (some carried forward) to the Autumn Challenge. If I can read five I will be very satisfied.

1. Shades of Autumn - A Fortunate Life, I will get this book read one way or another :)
2. Strong Female Lead - The Girl Who Played with Fire.
3. St Patrick's Day - Trinity
4. Labour Day - undecided.
5. Dr Suess' Birthday - nope, probably wont do this, my son at age 21 wouldn't see the humour at all.
6. Reduce - Voyager
7. Re-read - undecided but I rarely re-read books
8. Recycle (library) - undecided but I have plenty left over from the Summer Challenge to choose if I get there.
9. Ides of March - Prince of Darkness
10. Short Stories - nothing pops up yet but I think I will look at some of the stories written by women of the Afghan Women's Writing Project http://www.awwproject.org/

edited to change my choice #3 to Trinity by Leon Uris

Aussie Readers', Writers' or Brave Experimenters' Cocktail - A friend found this recipe years ago when she looked through a drinks book for a punch recipe. To my certain knowledge, no one I know has ever actually tried it.

(Original Name) WOOLLOOMOOLOO WONDER

60 ml gin
15 ml tomato sauce (yes, I said tomato sauce!)
15 ml lemon juice
1 dash Tabasco sauce (it gets worse)
1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (I told you so)
1 cup crushed ice

Put all ingredients into a blender, whirl at low speed for 15 seconds. Pour into a tall glass.

A Wonder indeed. The hangover and the cure in a single serve...

Monya (aka Mary)

Omg..I think that would scare the hang over away. Don't think I'm that 'brave' to try it out. And thankfully haven't had a hang over in ages.

Asian shops usually have little instant hang over cures. I tried one once but I didn't have a hang over :/

There was once a drink called 'Feeling seedy?' which was also for hangovers and the like. I was to young to drink at that stage but I felt sick so I tried it. Worked wonders on myself and my Mum. We were bit sad when it went off the market.

message 88: by Louise (new)

Louise Ok, I finally got my act together and picked books for this challenge! I will only be able to do 5 (if I'm lucky) so these are the ones I picked:

3. St Patty's Day: A Star Called Henry
5. Children's Book: The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Age 13 1/2
6. Reduce: The Shadow of the Wind
7. Reuse: The Elephant Keeper (I started this but didn't quite finish it, so I'm reusing it by finishing it)
10. Short Stories: The Progress of Love

First up: The Shadow of the Wind, which is already home from the library!

That is what it sounded like to me too. I haven't had a Bloody Mary in years. I do know I used to like them.

Bloody Mary

Here's the classic Bloody Mary recipe.

1 1/2 ounces (1 jigger) vodka
1/2 cup tomato juice
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
Worcestershire sauce to taste
Tabasco to taste
1 celery stick for garnish
1 lemon wedge for garnish

I don't drink either, Cheryl! I just copied the recipe because I thought it looked like such a weird drink and I have a weird sense of humour. The only things I know about drinks are what I've garnered from books and movies. I thought a Bloody Mary was just vodka and tomato juice.

Before the moderators kick me off for dragging you all off topic (er, most of you seem to be moderators anyway), I'll tell you why I don't drink. Don't have the head for it or the taste buds. I'm not a wowser, just can't stand the smell of most liquor much less the taste.

BUT I have been "merry" once in my life. All it took was a dose of flu and a bottle of cough mixture taken over several hours. Found out later the stuff was 10% alcohol...

I'll shut up now!

Monya (aka Mary)

message 94: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Heh - I did that too, Monya, with Nyquil (tm). I'm more careful now.

But Yay! It's March - I can start reading the books I set aside for this challenge!

Luke (ljuke) Jeez, I did so badly on the summer reading challenge. I bought and moved into a house, which took up so much time that I ended up stuck on The Stand for 2 months! Hopefully I'll do better this time around.

1 The Colour of Autumn: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee FINISHED (I was afraid that this was going to be really dreary, but it was so awesome. First 5 star book in a while.)
2 International womens day : Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard FINISHED (this was great. Really well drawn characters.)
3 St Patricks day: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce FINISHED (hard work, but enjoyable.)
4 Labour Day: Psycho by Robert Bloch FINISHED (very similar to the movie. So concisely written, which is what I like in a book.)
5 Read a childrens book: Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson FINISHED (yaaarrgghh it be well worth reading.)
6 reduce: The Gunslinger by Stephen King FINISHED (good, if you can get over a pretty dull first half.)
7 re use: Cycle of the Werewolf by Stephen King FINISHED (hell brief. Would have made good YA fiction, if not for the swear words.)
8 recycle: Devil in a Blue Dress by Walter Mosely FINISHED (this book was so awesome. Kind of a noir thing, but with a lot of other themes.)
9 The Ides of March: Armadillos & Old Lace by Kinky Friedman FINISHED (awesome light reading. Consistently funny.)
10 Read short story or Anthology: Switch Bitch by Roald Dahl FINISHED (holy hell this was funny. Had me grinning my head off on the bus to and from work.)
Devil in a Blue Dress (Easy Rawlins Mysteries) by Walter Mosley The Gunslinger (The Dark Tower, #1) by Stephen King Rum Punch by Elmore Leonard Psycho by Robert Bloch Switch Bitch by Roald Dahl To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Armadillos & Old Lace by Kinky Friedman Cycle of the Werewolf by Stephen King A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
