I really loved that book until towards the end. Hope that doesn't give anything away.

My reading is totally slacking lately, thanks to the lovely school and wanting to dish out homework like it's going out of style..

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments So I finally made some headway with 13 Little Blue Envelopes (Little Blue Envelope, #1) by Maureen Johnson .

And its kinda making me LOL because I went on a high school Europe trip (6 countries, about 12 days) and so far there's only ONE place that Ginny's been that wasn't on my high school trip. That being Rome. And while I haven't been there I have been to Venice so the Italy section still reads somewhat familiar.

I thought that one was just ok. Nothing that made me run out and read the next one.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I felt the same. It was a bit too middle grade for me, but I think that's the author's writing style because I got a similar vibe with her Heist Society book.

Heist Society isn't by the same author as Little Blue Envelopes.

Little Blue Envelopes is okay but what's really fun for me is all the Europe memories it brings back. Because it's pretty spot on with some things (read my status updates and you'll see some of my reaction). I can practically see the people who inspire some of the characters because I've met them too.

Yeah. It was kind of middle grade. I much prefer the book I just read
Wanderlove by Kirsten Hubbard or books like North of Beautiful by Justina Chen Headley Amy & Roger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson if we are talking about self discovery/love stories.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Errr...you're right. It's Gallagher Girls, isn't it?

Maybe. I haven't read those.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I'm not against MG, but I'd almost rather read more fantasy/sci-fi adventures if it's going to be MG because then I'm not caring if there's any sort of romance at all.

I just get annoyed with books where it shows a girl who is interested in a guy and it takes the whole book for a kiss to happen (or even several books, like it was with Darkest Powers). It makes me feel like this grown up perv hanging out rooting for them to do something and I don't like that feeling, haha.

I'm like this with books where I can relate to the experiences. Sometimes I'll enjoy a book solely for the fact that it brings back memories. Unfortunately, most of those books are usually involving bad kids though since I didn't really have a productive high school life.

message 11269: by Cassi aka Snow White (new)

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments The memories it brings back are some of my favorite. My first Europe trip then the 3 months I spent in Switzerland (which was when I made a side-trip to Italy).

Of course it makes me miss traveling and bemoan that I now exist in the real world.

Adorable is definitely the word to describe it :)

message 11284: by Michelle (new)

Michelle Scott (michellescottfiction) I'm reading Feed and I'm surprised that this is YA. I'm not generally offended by strong language, but I didn't expect a YA book to have this many f-bombs!

message 11285: by Jim (new)

Jim Franz | 36 comments I finished Speaker for the Dead (Ender's Saga, #2) by Orson Scott Card and just started Xenocide (Ender's Saga, #3) by Orson Scott Card .

I can see why people who liked Ender's Game may not care for Speaker. Though it does continue the story, it does so in a way that is vastly different from Ender's Game. Speaker (and Xenocide so far) doesn't even feel like YA to me. I didn't like it as much as Ender's Game, but that's a pretty high bar, so I'm not judging it too harshly for that.

What did you think of the Joplin book? Is it too much for a conservative Middle School? Janis graduated from my old HS...I've heard the stories!

I wouldn't include it in a middle school collection. I didn't find anything terribly offensive, but there was one photograph in the book where Joplin's naked breast showed, and it talked about her drug use and sex life. So, definitely more appropriate for 9 grade and up.
