Stormi (StormReads) (bmreviewsohmy) Listening to Storm Front (The Dresden Files, #1) by Jim Butcher My first time with Jim Butcher's Harry Dresden..lol. The narator is just right for it, even though I have never read the novel, he just seems to fit. He sighs a lot, but some how it makes me think that is sort of how Harry's voice should be...lol.

I really liked Graceling. :)

I didn't like The Iron King. The world building was amazing and I loved the fairy world, but the characters were all so unlikeable, and it was very similar to The Labrynth. (Epic movie).

yeah, I really liked the graceling as well though some parts I didn't like so much. For example that Katsa never could right describe her feelings or that some parts of the story were told in the past. (For example: we made it to the roadhoase, but on the way we had....) you know what I mean? For me it build some distance between the story, the feelings and to the characters.

About the iron knight: so far I really like it and I still like meg. She's thought and not stupid (like other female main characters). At the moment I'm at the end of the elysium where prince Ash saved her. So I'm curious what will happen next :D

I didn't notice the technical errors, but there were a few small things that bothered me about Graceling. Mainly that Katsa was considered a strong female character by doing masculine things, as if being like a boy is the only way for a girl to be strong. I love Katsa though.

I disliked Meghan from the first couple of pages. She complains a lot and I can't stand whiney protagonists. She says early on that she doesn't care that she can't buy new clothes like the "airheaded" girls in her class, yet later complains that her family is too poor to buy her new clothes. What in the who? I lived on hand-me-downs most of my childhood and didn't complain about being poor.

Haha, I'm very critical of characters. There have been very few whom I have loved entirely. :P I'll probably read the second one eventually. Hopefully she matures a bit.

Sara (rose081900) | 177 comments Finished Magyk (Septimus Heap, #1) by Angie Sage It was pretty good. I am moving onto Flyte (Septimus Heap, #2) by Angie Sage and The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch . I heard about the second one in my Sociology class and I had to of course read it, which shouldn't take me very long to read since it's a pretty short book.

I hope you're all doing well, haven't been around at all lately due to school. :)

Mh, i don't know. I have no problem with Katsa and that she shows her strengh with muscles *lol*
but I don't describe her as a strong women because of her ability to do 'man -things' and be physically strong - BUT with her determination and that she just did what she has in her mind or that she did everything possible for bitterlbue, though she did'nt want to leave Po. So that I call strong - I've encountered characters which weren't strong at all, but not Katsa. I like though she could show some more of her feelings :p

and Meg - I don't think she's a dummy or annoying (so far). But we'll see how I'll like her at the end of the book. At the moment she is okay, not the perfect girl but also not the most annoying. Have you already read 'house of nihgt' or 'the immortals' -THERE the girls where annoying - I could've shout and shake them ... :D

I agree that Katsa was strong in her own right, but a lot of people viewed her strength as masculine. It didn't bother me too much though, and she's one of my favourite MC's. :D

Hahahahaha! I have read both. Horrible MC's. Zoey is one of the most annoying, immature MC's I've ever had the misfortune to read. Have you read Fallen and Hush, Hush? I think they should make the list also. :P

mh, I don't define her as masculine. Though she was strong and could kill and fight, she was a woman were it was important :p
And I really liked it that this time the woman could stand on her own feet and didn't need a man to feel save. you know what I mean? ANd i Love Po, he was soo cute *yummy* :D

about the other girls... o god, yes - I also read hush hush and I totally didn't get it what the others were such a fan of it.. Nora was soo stupid... she had more luck than brain and was always just lucky that she survived. *yuck*

sorry to ask but what mean girl MC??? I have no idea. and yes, I guess you're the only one who really don't like meg and her friends. So far I've no problem with her or with Puck or the cat (I love the cat *lol*) or with Ash - though I think he's a jerk and just pretty.

I don't understand what you mean. I didn't say anything about a mean girl MC. Haha, the cat is the only one I liked. :P I could tolerate the characters, but nothing beyond that.

You and I obviously have different tastes in certain characters, so just because I find the Fallen MC stupid and irritating doesn't mean you will. Many people have read Fallen and loved the characters, so obviously not everyone agrees with me, and you may be among them. That's all I meant. :)

oh, I see - I've mixed something. Okay, so there are no mean girls but just annoying ones *lol*
But I get it now, thank you. And about our taste - maybe it will be the same with fallen, because I also can't stand Zoey (house of nihgt) and Ever (the immortals).. oh, and nora (hush hush) and I also didn't like 'I am number four' or 'shiver' - where everyone was a fan and hysteric :D

message 10944: by Anna (new)

Anna Martina: Haha, that's okay. It probably will be the same, because the Fallen MC is very similar to Nora and Ever. She's weak, dull and obsessed with a boy. Bleh.

I couldn't get into 'I Am Number Four'. It was a bit boring, in my opinion. I read 'Shiver' and liked it okay, but am definitely not a hysteric fan. :P

What paranormal/romances do you like?

message 10945: by Tina ♥ Bookaholic (new)

Tina ♥ Bookaholic (martinabookaholic) mh, okay than fallen slipped on my to-read list and I'll read other books before instead. thanks for the help and for opening my eyes. Another Ever or another Nora would be to much for me at the moment, because I still have to read House of night 6, 7 and 8 (so, there's enough silly bunnies in it)

yeah- I also didn't liked the story in I Am number four and it was just chaotic in the end fight and then the final end of the book wasn't a real end for me, the book was just finished, in the middle of the story. And shiver was okay, mh, okay - I just gave it 2 stars *lol* I found it boring and the girl (I don't know her name) was a littel freak obsessed with wolves, though they have attacked her as a child *cross*

Mh, what I like:
I Love the FEVER SERIES by Karen Marie Moning
or all by Cassandra Clare, and Stephenie Meyer (kitschy, I know), or I like the darkest Power Trilogy by Kelley Armstrong and of course Harry Potter :) (even if its not romantic*lol*)

and you?

message 10946: by Anna (new)

Anna Martina: I gave Shiver three stars, though I was being fairly generous. Grace was dull and I hated that when she was attacked a child she just laid there. At least attempt to fight back! I liked Sam, but I did not like how "sensitive" he was. It was a bit of a turn off, especially when he was talking about being a "leaking womb". *shudder*

I've heard good things about the Fever series, but I'm not sure I'd like it. I don't really like adult series' even though I'm not a teen anymore. :P

I'm going to read Kelly Armstrong's 'The Darkest Powers' eventually. I LOVE HARRY POTTER. It's my favourite series of all time. :D

I'm trying to think of a paranormal romance book or series I've read and loved, but I'm coming up blank. Strange, considering it's one of the genre's I like to write in. :S

message 10947: by Anna (last edited Sep 20, 2011 03:31AM) (new)

Anna Oh! I really enjoyed the 'Wicca' series when I was younger. It's about a girl who discovers she's a witch. Used to be one of my favourites. :) (I think it's called 'Sweep' outside Australia.)

'Wicked Lovely' was good, but I haven't read any more in the series.

I also don't mind 'Evernight', even though the MC of that is a bit boring. Is it really that hard for author's to give their characters distinct personalities?

I think I prefer Urban Fantasy. :)

message 10948: by Tina ♥ Bookaholic (new)

Tina ♥ Bookaholic (martinabookaholic) you gave Shiver 3 stars though you found Grace dull and Sam too senstive - girl, I don't get you!? *lol*
but I also, disregarding form the characters, I didn't like the story very much. It was often just boring and soo short... I don't know but while reading it I always had the feeling it's just a short story and not a whole book.

YOU HAVE TOO ABSOLUTELY READ THE FEVER SERIES - It sooo gread. I love it! *wohoo*
Though you've to fight throw the first one and the second but then it really gets great and I love or I adore the fourth and the fifth. the story is sometimes a bit brutal but Moning has a great writing styl so you can read it quick and I also like the twists in it - always unexpected. (rarely for me) :)

OH - I really like chloe and the boys - I'm curious how you'll like the darkest power :)
have you read something from kelley armstrong already or not?

Wicca - I've heard about but its not on my to-read list. maybe I've enough form witches after soo many years with 'charmed' (the tv-series) but maybe I'll think about it.

whats about evernight - are there vampires or what is in the books?

and about your question: yes - its definitly VERY hard to write distinct personalities, though not impossible. I've read a story as well (I'm at the middle at the moment) and though in my head my MC is great, but when I read it, she also sounds a bit numb or silly. But its hard to write it otherwise, because otherwise she wouldn't endure the things which meant to happen, and then she couldn't change and grow from that. you know what I mean? :)

message 10949: by Anna (new)

Anna Martina: Well, nowadays I have very low expectations for paranormal. :/ The writing is very pretty, though sometimes overdone, Sam is likeable and not abusive, and though the story was slow, I managed to finish it without wanting to throw it against a wall. So, all that warrants a three star from me. :P

I'll check it out. If it intrigues me enough, I'll definitely give it a read. :D

I read her latest YA book. The characters were all likeable so I'm hoping that's the same with the darkest power.

I love witches. Magic is my favourite thing in paranormal. There's so much you can do with it. I really liked Charmed when I was younger. :)

It's vampires and later ghosts. Decent as far as vampire stories go.

I feel like a lot of author's sacrifice character personality, either for plot or romance, and I hate that. I wish they'd put effort into all aspects of their novel.
