Susan I'm just starting Girls in Trucks by Katie Crouch but after seeing what so many of my friends said about it on here, I'm not sure if I should keep reading!! Ahhhh-I'm going to give it a try!!

I'll be interested to see what you think of Tempus, Tish. So far I seem to be the only one who hasn't loved it!

Really. That moves that book from a "Maybe-Not" to a DO NOT READ. I don't like when author's yell at people. It's unprofessional & creeptastic.

message 10456: by Arphaxad (new)

Arphaxad | 335 comments Agreed. She did then send another one to apologise though, which was nice of her. It must be hard to see your hard work disparaged, so I get it even though I'd still say no response to negative reviews is definitely best!

message 10457: by Cassi aka Snow White (new)

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Well at least she apologized. The traditionally published author who was rude to me did not apologize or recant. He's blacklisted by me for life now.

When you publish your work your putting it out there. You have to learn to live with that. If not just keep it on your computer.

message 10458: by Tyra (last edited Aug 03, 2011 05:50PM) (new)

Tyra Lynn (tyralynn) | 4 comments I did apologize after realizing (unfortunately too late) that I should not respond. I understand that there will be criticism and that it's to be expected, but it is hard to take when the reason someone dislikes your book (soul-mates and too girlie) is the entire point of your book. If I don't like Chinese food, I would not try to eat and critique Chinese food - I don't like it. That was the only point I meant to make. If you hate girlie soul-mates, then don't read a girlie book about soul-mates, lol. It would have been much easier for me to take someone saying "The writing was crappy and the story was stupid," if that makes sense. Maybe it doesn't make sense and I'm just crazy (I often wonder.) If so, then please disregard everything I've just said and this was only a figment of your imagination. :D

message 10459: by Cassi aka Snow White (new)

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments But you see there are girlie books with soulmates that work. But it seems there are even more that don't work especially in YA.

Here we read the whole spectrum of YA. There are some genres I'm reluctant to read...but then you get a surprise (as me & Aphraxad have talked about) like The Raging Quiet by Sherryl Jordan and you HAVE to keep reading outside your genre for gems like that.

Goodreads is much less about "I'm an expert in so & so genre" as it is about rating everything you've read so that your able to give suggestions. For example I know that me an Aprhaxad have similar tendencies where girly books come into the picture and that allows me to judge what I should read based on what she's already read.

Goodreads is not like a professional publication where you need to be an expert. It's more useful because by seeing what people like and seeing what they don't like I can choose books more wisely. I have a few friends on here who I get a lot of GREAT recommendations from who happen to be more girly than myself. Because I can check their whole reading habits it allows them to compare their taste to my taste and better choose books that I'm going to like.

Trust me I don't want to read books that I don't like anymore than you don't want to read reviews that are negative towards your book BUT if I'm not honest about books I didn't like then my friends with similar interests won't know what I truly think and won't know which books aren't for them.

You see there are SOOOO many books in the world and SOOO little time. Without honest negative reviews as well as honest positive reviews I would never be able to find the books that are best for me. My soulmate books as I like to call them.

Ali | 106 comments That's the brilliant part of threads like this ... We all have a common link but very varied opinions on different books. Agree with Cassi's post entirely. Examples... The Iron King series, while I personally adore it, the opinion on this thread is really split. I disliked The Uglies but loved THG. talking about books with others just helps you decide what you might like, or not. Now I like soulmates and girly books so might love said book. It's nice to know what people didn't like but those same reasons might be why I would read the book... If that makes sense. Also, always wait 24 hours to respond to anything that ticks you off in life... Rules to live by :).

message 10461: by Tyra (new)

Tyra Lynn (tyralynn) | 4 comments Ali, the 24 hrs rule is SO right, and I know that. See, I have an excuse because I went to the dentist today and I am am 1) in pain 2) in a pissy mood because of it and 3) on hydrocodone, so the brain is not functioning properly, lol.

And I agree with you Cassi and I completely get what you're saying. I was only trying to explain my initial thought process and reasoning (such as it was.)Just a little insight from the authors perspective if I may. It isn't necessarily the criticism that hurts so much as the criticism of something you can't fix/change/address/improve. For instance, Arphaxad did not like my book because it was too girlie, about soul-mates, and a couple of other reasons. My book is intentionally girlie and entirely based upon the premise of soul-mates, therefor I can't 'fix' what she does not like. I could improve poor writing skills, or possibly bolster and rework a lagging story, but I can't make a girlie soul-mate book not a girlie soul-mate book. That's why I said it would be easier if she said my writing was crappy. I can work on writing skills.

Anyway, as I said before, I completely get what both of you are saying and it makes perfect sense. I do like that you can share your likes and dislikes and the reasons for them, and share your lists of books, etc. It does make it much easier to find things you will like.

I hope everyone has a good night. :D

jep, thats correct - the fourht is kind of an independent book, but some characters (like Tally or David) are also in it, though only after the middle, but they are playing an important part in it.
yes - and then tell me how you liked it - I'm curious about other opinions. :)

I'm feeling a little better today, thank you, but it's only because I've taken enough hydrocodone to feel like I am walking about two inches above the ground, lol. I haven't decided yet if that is good or bad, but since I'm a wimp when it comes to pain I'm going to call it good today.

Like soul-mates, don't like girlie? .... Yes, I will be very interested in your opinion when you finish. I hope the soul-mates-liking part wins out! ;D

you can store roughly 14,000 books lol.. I have one and love it. Even though I do miss reading from a book, I love having a bookstore at my fingertips 24/7. Although it's getting rather expensive.. hmm

I still use the library unless absolutely necessary (or if there's a good deal like Finnikan of the Rock during the Big Deal) such as a new release or a book I REALLY want.

But I still am spending more money on books in the long run.

message 10486: by Tish (new)

Tish | 207 comments Even though I was already reading Tempus by Tyra Lynn on my Kindle and listening to the audiobook of Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green , the library notified me that The Name of the Wind (Kingkiller Chronicle #1) by Patrick Rothfuss was in. Since I had been on the waiting list for weeks and a bunch of people are still on the list (so I won't be able to renew it), I had to go ahead and start it. Not that that's a real hardship: I love the size, cover, etc. Seems substantial and intriguing. :) That's the only drawback of a Kindle: no actual BOOK to hold in your hands and admire. But I'm afraid Tempus and Will Grayson are temporarily on hold and I was enjoying both of them.

message 10487: by Cassi aka Snow White (new)

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Your library doesn't let you renew if there's a waiting list?

Mine gives me my normal 2 renews on audiobooks anyways. Otherwise there isn't enough time to finish most of the time.

I am almost done with the audio of this! I would have finished sooner but it expired before I was done, then I had to go through the waiting list again, boooo!
