Interesting. Percy Jackson may be shelved in the Middle Grade section of my Barnes & Noble (I bought mine when they were highlighted in the front of the store, haha), but Maximum Ride is in our YA section, along with all Patterson's other series. I'm sure that stores and libraries all over probably do things different.Mandi-The below is not against you. I agree that it is a parents job to monitor what their child is reading and determine where they should be in terms of material. I just had another thought about the article.
I also want to add that I feel like it would be natural that finding suitable reading material for a child would be more difficult when someone is looking in a section designed for someone older. Sometimes it's not easy to keep your child reading Middle grade books when their reading level is higher, but is it fair to persecute an older area of your library because they don't have enough books for a younger age. YA is for older teens, MG is for younger teens, Adult is for adult. If my 16 year old is reading Adult books because that's her reading level, is it right to attack the Adult genre because they don't offer enough reading material for 16 year olds? That's why it's the adult section.
Young Adult section is for young adults, so no they won't have as much suitable material for Preteens/early teens. It's the nature of the beast.

Wow, I haven't been on here in a while and came back to lots of post! :)Right now I am reading
its not a YA but its pretty good so far. Thinking about starting
for my YA book.
Just finished Secrets of the Dragon Sanctuary
.I'm trying to read The Last Invisible Boy
but I'm having a hard time getting into the story. When I cannot focus on that one, I go to my other book Gulliver's Travels
.
Wendy/Gwendy--maybe if we clean Emily/s house, she'll let us read her FOREVER book.Stormi, I have The Gathering in my TBR pile, too. I really liked Darkest Powers, I think I keep putting it off because I know I'm going to miss the gang from the last series.
Just stared the short story
and then going to start the 2nd book in the Vampiric Housewife series,
!

@ Teresa Because your son is twelve I agree with you. But I dont thing its about taking charge of kids lives as much as it is about guiding them on the path to adulthood
I see your point but that was rather hard to read.I think we've hit the whole crux of the problem here. People don't understand what age levels YA is actually for.
I always read above my grade level. And thank GOD schools didn't do what they do now. Some schools you aren't allowed to read books below your reading level. They let me read anything and everything. I read a lot of adult books especially the classics at a young age (including Shakespeare for fun in middle school). But I also read books for my age group.
In early high school I read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Seriously I am not maimed or harmed. Books generally only do good.
I liked it, but it was almost too middle grade for my tastes. Some MG's I do like, but this particular one I felt like I would have had a lot more fun reading as a teen than I did at my current age. But, everyone else seems to love it, so I chalk it up to me being old and bitter or something.

Good! It's promising so far! It sort of reminds me of a younger version of Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult, idk if you've read that or not!

So far I'd say if you liked Nineteen Minutes you'd probably like this one!
I just finished
and it was meh. If your looking for a book on abuse or cutting, I can recommend you a few I liked better. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't wow.I am currently trying to get through
and it's quite hard to read. It's about a teenage boy dealing with OCD and he has to count everything in prime numbers. Clocks, his heartbeat, his watch, french fries. Everything. It's hard to read because the book is his POV so he's constantly stopping his train of thought to count, multiply, divide or flip out. It's an interesting story. I also FINALLY bought a copy of
so I'm going to re-read that...oh AND I'm reading
AGAIN. I also have
I loaned from the library. It's 102 out today so I'm hibernating indoors, great day to read!!!!!!

I tried reading
and it has a totally different feel than The Darkest Powers did. The stories in The Darkest Powers and The Darkness Rising triologies are supposed to come together in the last book of The Darkness Rising, but I think I might wait until all the books are out to read them.

"Yes, I knew the series would eventually merge and I've considered waiting. I'm not sure how big a role those guys will play in that third book though, so I may pick it up at some point anyway.
I'm super excited to finally have a chance to read one of the hot Aussie YA titles people have been raving about recently. I just bought
which I really want to start, but I have so many books in my TBR/reviewed pile I feel a little guilty. We'll see how strong the willpower is later tonight....
I requested in on the 4th and never heard whether or not I wasw approved. It's still listed on my requests but when I try to look for it now I can't find it.
You're welcome, Carmel! I'm pretty jazzed about it. So many GR friends have loved it. Such a gorgeously weird cover, too.
Oh, cool! So funny, I was talking about how excited I was to get her book on Twitter and she retweeted it, hah. She seems really lovely, I can't wait to read the book. What list of authors are you referring to?And Jennifer--I'm so excited for you! Lots of FEED fanatics in here. :D

Have you read Tamora Pierce's
series. these 2 series have a similar feel to me. wild magic is one of my favorite series!

Oh, I see! That's awesome. And hah, my Aussie GoodReads friends are among the nicest ones! :) Yay you guys. But you do torture us with reviews of this goldmine of great YA that is unavailable to us Yanks.
Hah, Stacia was kidding around in one of our other groups about how she was going to start calling me "darlin" like a waitress at a truck stop. :)

My phone does that sometimes but if I delete the message & start over it stops. That's a weird quirk all the time.I agree about Twilight. If I have kids (right now I have a dog & she can't read so we're all good) I'd want to explain to her the signs of an abusive relationship before she read it.
I think the difference between that & some of the books that deal with rape/drugs/etc is that it's just a story from a woman who thinks that's healthy whereas the "issue" books have value as cautionary tales.
Once you mention the "T" word you always open up a can-of-worms discussion wise because everyone has an opinion on it.
Did you like Tea Rose, Jessie? It was different from what I expected (so soapy!) but I thought it was fun.Cassi: right now I have a dog & she can't read so we're all good Heeeeeeeeeee.
Carmel: strawberry. Although your question made me think of the movie Chicken Run.
I threw caution to the winds and started
last night. So far, it's awesome! So different from anything else I've ever read.
I'm enjoying
. You can totally tell where Libba Bray stands on pretty much everything but I don't really mind. She doesn't even pretend to hide her opinions. But she's funny and the book is funny so it seems to work.
I've been working on
and just made it to "Book III" and need to take a break. It's not bad, but just TERRIBLY slow and after 200+ pages it's a bit frustrating to wonder "Is there a point? Where the heck is this going?"I hate this restless feeling for a really good read. I'm not sure how to remedy this right now.
Sigh.
