message 9201: by Wendy Darling (new)

Wendy Darling (wendydarling) | 193 comments I shed horrible tears over Deadline (Newsflesh Trilogy Series #2) by Mira Grant last night, which is the sequel to FEED. I can't believe it's another year until the third.

I think I'm reading Shift (Shade, #2) by Jeri Smith-Ready next. Julie, I have A Wilder Life ARC waiting to be read, too! I love the author's tweets as @halfpintingalls so I'm hoping it will be great as well.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Did you really like Shade then, Wendy? I have both Shift and Shade (got an arc before it was released), and never got around to reading them.

message 9203: by Heidi (new)

Heidi It's June! Just FYI our featured author this month is Shannon Hale and our featured theme reads are: 1. First Day of Summer - light summer type books (romances, funny books -- you know Meg Cabot type books)

2. Tie: Read a book from either theme
Father's Day - books with strong father figures (good and bad) as well as books with fatherless protags (i.e. missing or dead fathers) OR
Gay Pride Day - books with gay or lesbian characters.

Please feel free to join us in the challenges thread if you are reading anything that applies. :)

I did like Shade. I wouldn't say it's one of my favorites, but it's a light, entertaining read and I'm curious to see where it goes next. I could use something a little less intense after all the stuff I've been reading lately.

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Err...meant I got an arc of the second one. My brain is not working today. At ALL.

message 9206: by Lloyd (new)

Lloyd | 415 comments Okay, all the glowing reviews and recent talk are making me want to start Feed (Newsflesh, #1) by Mira Grant . I grabbed it while it was on sale for $2.99 and now went and bought Deadline (Newsflesh, #2) by Mira Grant and Apocalypse Scenario #683 The Box by Mira Grant figuring I'll want to read those too. (The curse/blessing of the Kindle one-click instant gratification purchasing.)

Lloyd | 415 comments Catie wrote: "You won't be sorry Lloyd. I am only 40 pages into Deadline and I am already in love with it."

I have a feeling that The Throne of Fire (Kane Chronicles, #2) by Rick Riordan is going to be delayed while I get sidetracked. :)

message 9208: by Wendy Darling (last edited Jun 01, 2011 03:51PM) (new)

Wendy Darling (wendydarling) | 193 comments Lloyd--good! I can't bear knowing all this stuff on my own. I'm glad you got FEED while it was on sale, I grabbed a couple for friends as well. But I love them so much I would gladly have paid more.

message 9209: by Arphaxad (new)

Arphaxad | 335 comments Wow, are these books really that good? They don't much appeal to me based on the blurb/the amount of crying they seem to induce, but I admit you guys are tempting me a tiny bit with your 5 star ratings!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Every once in a while, it's good to find a book that makes you emotional. I couldn't do it all the time though.

message 9211: by Wendy Darling (new)

Wendy Darling (wendydarling) | 193 comments I just posted a comment on my review of DEADLINE saying that I hoped that people (well, men) would not be turned off by my incessant talk of bawling. They're actually written in a very clean, almost dispassionate manner--the events are just devastating. In one week, the author/books have made it onto my all time faves. They're really incredible books that I hope a lot of people will read.

BUT I really want you to read Ultraviolet by R.J. Anderson , Arphaxad! I think you'd really like that one.

message 9212: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) I am listening to Marcelo In The Real World by Francisco X. Stork and I don't like the narrator at all. BUT I do find the story interesting so I keep listening. Not like me at all. Maybe I'll get the book and read it but first I'll need a new audiobook to replace it.

Oh good! *rubs hands together* Ultraviolet by R.J. Anderson is definitely on my TBR (especially since I noticed my library has just ordered it) and I think I will at least attempt Feed (Newsflesh, #1) by Mira Grant to see if I can deal with the sadness. Ahh, I just love this group. You guys are so great for solid, interesting recommendations! :)

message 9214: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) I think I am the only person on here that didn't like Feed!

message 9215: by Daria (new)

Daria (dariadeptula) Finished Between the Sea and Sky by Jaclyn Dolamore , I was pleasantly surprised because I expected it to be a paranormal romance, but it was a fantasy!

Wendy Darling (wendydarling) | 193 comments Peep (Pop! Pop!) wrote: "I think I am the only person on here that didn't like Feed!"

Aw, I'm sorry to hear that, Peep. Did you get through the whole thing? The politics were a little rough on me, though I know Catie liked that part.

Emily, that's so nice to hear re: Between Sky and Sea! Is there any romance in it at all? That cover would lead you to think so...

Arphaxad, I can't WAIT to hear what you think of both. Mind-bending stuff.

message 9217: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Murphy | 96 comments Just finished The Wide-Awake Princess. It was really cute. I've been trying to get throughThe Wizard, the Witch, and Two Girls from Jerseybut I am not loving it. Also just started Boy Proof, not too sure about it, either.

I really liked that book... The only thing I don't really like is that all of Sarah Dessen's books are the same pretty much. The concept of the book is the same. I don't want to give anything away so I wont say how it really is the same.

When was that election? We did a Mock Bush vs Gore at our school but it may have been the next one I voted it.

Sometimes I find politics fascinating and sometimes I just feel like I can trust anyone. That might partially be because I'm from Eastern Kentucky and we get a share of crooked ones. Example: Clay County Vote buying OR my former sheriff (Whitley County) just got sentenced to 15 years in jail.

message 9229: by Jill (new)

Jill | 68 comments I recently read The Informationist and it was extremely good. I highly recommend it if you like thrillers. I am currently reading Down River which is thrillerish. It is excellent.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Okay I voted for the first time in the next election in 2004. Bush vs Kerry (and I seriously had to look that up because I could not remember who ran against Bush). But Bush vs Gore is first one I remember very well.

I really enjoyed The Fallen series.

I LOVED Hex Hall! I was so not expecting it to be as good as it was, I was really put off by the cover but I guess I should know better than to literally judge a book by it's cover haha!

message 9241: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) @Catie - I didn't know it was a book!

@Arphaxad - I think he plays a bad boy well!

message 9242: by Wendy Darling (new)

Wendy Darling (wendydarling) | 193 comments Tessa, that is a great haul of books. And Peep! About a Boy is so fantastic! I'm glad you finally got to see it. Love love love that movie.

Yay Kristina! Oh, boy. Now you get to read Demonglass! Isn't it hilarious?

And ugh. I just finished Shift (Shade, #2) by Jeri Smith-Ready , which was a HUGE disappointment. I'm so upset over what the author chose to do.

message 9243: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) Wendy I'm mad that I waited so long to see it. I love the way it played out.

message 9244: by Laura (new)

Laura I read Enclave (Razorland, #1) by Ann Aguirre in about a day. It was such a good book and a really quick read.

I finally started Wither (Chemical Garden, #1) by Lauren DeStefano , although I'm not loving it so far. I'm trying not to judge it too early, because the the beginning of Enclave was sort of boring and then it got so good really fast. I'm also rereading The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials, #1) by Philip Pullman for the 5th or so time.

message 9245: by Arphaxad (new)

Arphaxad | 335 comments Peep (Pop! Pop!) wrote: "@Catie - I didn't know it was a book!

He does indeed. And I just love his utter Englishness, in all roles! :)

message 9246: by Wendy Darling (last edited Jun 02, 2011 01:10PM) (new)

Wendy Darling (wendydarling) | 193 comments Peep/Arphaxad: I can't hear "Killing Me Softly" now without thinking of it, hah! Can you believe how cute Nicholas Hoult has gotten, too? When I saw A Single Man, I couldn't believe it was the same adorably gawky kid.

Laura--if you don't love the beginning of Wither...it's pretty much the same throughout the book. It's not bad, but it's not great either, in my opinion. LOVE Golden Compass. :)

message 9247: by Wendy Darling (new)

Wendy Darling (wendydarling) | 193 comments PS re: the utter Englishness...that Oxbridge accent is always dreamy. :) Sometimes I try to imagine what you'd sound like as you leave comments, Arphaxad.

message 9248: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jsills3) | 159 comments Been waiting for Enclave (Razorland, #1) by Ann Aguirre for 3 weeks now. Still have 2 holds at the library ahead of me :(

message 9249: by Benji (new)

Benji (baristavonbeard) | 9 comments I'm currently reading John Green's Looking for Alaska (although it's gone on a bit of a break while I read Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.) I picked it up straight after finishing an Abundance of Katherines, but I wanted a little variety hence the switch.

I'd really like to read Inkheart (and the following books), they seem really up my street. Not sure if they come under young adult fiction but, still, they are firmly to-read's.

message 9250: by Daria (last edited Jun 02, 2011 01:51PM) (new)

Daria (dariadeptula) I've been waiting for Abandon (Abandon Trilogy #1) by Meg Cabot almost two weeks, and I'm still #34 on the hold list. I'd have bought it by now but I'm not that much of a Meg Cabot fan.
