Thanks Cassi! That's right, you and Catie did listen to Smekday... and really liked it. Four of us (Heidi as well) can't be wrong. It's a good audiobook to start out with!

Bossypants by Tina Fey is another good one. Tina narrates it herself. It isn't like listening to a movie, but it is funny. It's light so if you get distracted you don't miss much.

It's funny you should say this because I some times feel that third person is more personal than first, but that all depends on how well written the book
is : )

Brandi Heidi (don't listen to me) wrote: "Brandi wrote: "Heidi (don't listen to me) wrote: "Brandi wrote: "I'm reading Hold Me Closer, Necromancer by Lish McBride and enjoying it. I'm having a hard time getting it finished, but it's no..."

I really am pretty sure it's just that I don't like audiobooks in general, because it's the listening to it that annoys me. I can't listen while I'm doing other things because I'm too easily distracted so I would rather just read it myself than listen to someone else. But, if I decide to try it again, I will make sure to check with you! I do listen to your recommendations though, just not in audio format. :)

I am actually enjoying the book itself and the narrator is good, I just don't like listening to a book. I want to read it. :)

Yes it is. I'm not a fan. Lol. I didn't think I would be so maybe I set myself up for disliking them.

That's exactly why I decided to try an audiobook, but I can't concentrate while I'm doing other things. I get distracted.

It's impossible to dislike audiobooks in general, though it is very likely to hate most of them. I can't even tell you how many I've given up on because the narrator stunk it up.

I don't even know what I could recommend to you, we have so few books in common :(

What genres do you like? (determined to convert you!)

message 9158: by Heidi (new)

Heidi I told Brandi to listen to the Georgia Nicholson series on audio Peep. Very light and fun audio and I know she has read the first book.

I would say it would be ok. Not much major happens as it is small increments of time her life. They do tend to leave off on mini cliff hangers, but as she is 14-15 -- they are not major life events.

Wendy Darling (wendydarling) | 193 comments Brandi wrote: "I am actually enjoying the book itself and the narrator is good, I just don't like listening to a book. I want to read it. :) "

Oh, GOOD! Because the book is hilarious. :)

I have just started
Deadline (Newsflesh, #2) by Mira Grant (page 30) and I am tearing up already.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I only do stuff that doesn't need focusing on when I listen to audiobooks...like driving.

LOL. I realize how that sounds but driving requires very minimal brain effort. Mainly just "keep eyes open and make sure nothing is coming towards me that shouldn't be" which I can totally do while listening.

I also do simple knitting with audiobooks or walking. Anything more complex I don't do.

Agreed. I can't do anything on the computer while listening to audiobooks. Driving and walking are the main times I listen (as well as while I get ready in the morning).

message 9165: by Peep (Pop! Pop!) (new)

Peep (Pop! Pop!) I clean the house while listening to audiobooks. Well that or cook.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I might drive more than most people (solo) which is why audiobooks work so well for me.

Example: Tomorrow I'm driving 2 hrs to Frankfort KY for a training & 2 hrs home. Let's just say UGH. And I'm worried my audiobook will run out (dear Jacky I can't live without you!)

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Maybe if I rewarded myself with audiobooks I could actually make myself clean!

I might live a little bit like a bachelor sometimes. Only I'm not a dude.

message 9170: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jenniem05) | 34 comments I am looking for some good fantasy novels/books.. Please help! I am running low on reading material!! New to the group and love the interaction I see here so far! Hello everyone!

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Well if you're looking fantasy we're always quick to push Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta .

I always recommend Hex Hall (Hex Hall, #1) by Rachel Hawkins because I have a bit of a book crush on it.

The Lost Conspiracy by Frances Hardinge is fantasy I think but very very different. It's not your typical fantasy book.

Lately I haven't read much straight fantasy. Dystopian/steampunk/bit of urban fantasy.

message 9172: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jenniem05) | 34 comments Thanks!! Im adding them to my nook now!!

Jessie Leigh (msjessie) I must be in the minority as I didn't like any of Amanda Hocking's books. Hope you do, though!

You should also try Graceling by Kristin Cashore , Fire by Kristin Cashore , Poison Study (Study, #1) by Maria V. Snyder (and the rest of the series), and for really epic fantasy Mistborn The Final Empire (Mistborn, #1) by Brandon Sanderson is one of my absolute favorites! The magic system in Mistborn is one of the most unique I've ever read. Incredible series.

I LOVED the magic system in Mistborn The Final Empire (Mistborn, #1) by Brandon Sanderson ; it's got to be the best I've come across so far. So original and well thought-out, not to mention just plain awesome; I spent most of my reading time wishing I were an allomancer! :)

Flowers in the Attic is about four children who are locked up in an attic for years because their mother wants to win her father's approval and get an inheritance and she can't if her father knows that she has children. It's actually a little more complicated than that, but I don't want to give away spoilers.

I recommend The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking, #1) by Patrick Ness -- Chaos Walking is the best series I've read in a while!

Lloyd | 415 comments Jennifer wrote: "Thanks!! Im adding them to my nook now!!"

Stick around. Soon you will have more reading recommendations than you know what to do with.

I can 2nd a vote for The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking, #1) by Patrick Ness , though it isn't really fantasy. But it was one of my favorite series last year.

I fell out of fantasy but have recently been giving it another try. George Martin's Song of Ice and Fire is fantastic. Starts with A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1) by George R.R. Martin . Other than that, I was greatly surprised at The Name of the Wind (Kingkiller Chronicle, #1) by Patrick Rothfuss . Not a lot of action to it, but I really enjoyed it.

Welcome!

You convinced me to try George Martin :)

message 9190: by Lloyd (new)

Lloyd | 415 comments Finished up Young Samurai The Way of the Dragon (Young Samurai, #3) by Chris Bradford last night. The series just gets better with each book. The last quarter of this book was pretty intense! And, while it is extremely tempting to jump into the next book, I need to take a little break.

I SHOULD now work on finishing up The Throne of Fire (Kane Chronicles, #2) by Rick Riordan , but I'm not sure if I'm in the mood to read it right now. I always love his books, but I'm a little restless and might just start something different for now. I'm not sure.

message 9191: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I loved Game of Thrones. I haven't read the others, I'm spacing them out, but the first one was really really good.

Lloyd, are you watching the show?

Yes, I am. Excellent casting. I've only been disappointed in two particular scenes that 1) weren't in the book and 2) were totally pointless.

message 9194: by Lloyd (new)

Lloyd | 415 comments Heidi (don't listen to me) wrote: "You convinced me to try George Martin. :)"

He is a very good writer. I was familiar with his work way before his current success with Game of Thrones. Heck, before he was even editor of the Wild Cards Series. It was because of his name that I watched the live action Beauty and the Beast television show. (Alas, poor Catherine...)

Be forewarned, it isn't light reading. :)

message 9195: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) Are you thinking of the Littlefinger scene with the 'consorts' from Sunday night? For the life of me I could not remember that in the book, and I thought it was just there for HBO shock value.

Which other scenes were you talking about?

I agree, BTW, great casting. And for the most part (minus a few scenes) they are going by the book.

message 9196: by Tish (new)

Tish | 207 comments Finished The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper (liked it even better than the first one) and started North of Beautiful by Justina Chen Headley . And just got an email from my library that Mistborn The Final Empire (Mistborn, #1) by Brandon Sanderson is finally in! Especially looking forward to that after recent comments about it.

Yes, that scene. The other was a scene with Renly and Sir Loras that also never happened and was totally gratuitous and unnecessary. (Things like that remind me why I should just stick to books.)

message 9198: by Julie (new)

Julie I just started The Wilder Life My Adventures in the Lost World of Little House on the Prairie by Wendy McClure and I'm hoping it lives up to my expectations!

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I'm enjoying Game of Thrones too. I can only read a little bit at a time, but it's been good. I think I'm going to read one book per season if that's how the books and shows line up.

Started One for the Money (Stephanie Plum, #1) by Janet Evanovich and really liking it. Heidi I'm looking at you...
