Heidi The more you talk about Shiver the less I am able to defend it in my mind or remember why I thought I liked it! You have changed my initial thoughts. To be honest I think I only liked it because Jenna Lamia narrated it! Linger just pissed me off because Sam is a pu**y (hope that does not offend anyone).

Cassi I gave Saving Ceecee Honeycutt 3 stars because it was not terrible, but it was no "The Help" and I think it could have been better.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I'm debating between 2 & 3 stars. 2 always seems cruel. But what it means is "it was okay" which is really the reality of a lot of books.

Jenna Lamia can really help a story though.

message 7653: by Heidi (new)

Heidi There was just no major story from what I remember Cassi. The Help is a much better choice IMO if you want a similar book.

message 7654: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Did you go off topic Catie? hahaha

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Heidi I wrote: "There was just no major story from what I remember Cassi. The Help is a much better choice IMO if you want a similar book."

Library doesn't have the Help. I tend to read the audiobooks the library has unless its a series I love like Jacky Faber. It'll probably get it eventually.

I agree about their being no story. There has been TWICE I've like "OH THIS IS THE STORY NOW" example being the Tybee island incident. But nope. Just keeps meandering with unnecessary similes dotting the path. I'm almost done though so I'm not too concerned now.

message 7656: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Cassi if you can ever find The Help on audio through like Overdrive or something it is worth it. I would actually ask your library to consider buying it because it won some awards (audiobook awards) and would be a good investment for them. I asked my library to get the Millennium trilogy on audio and they did.

I haven't read much of it today, but what I did read was good.

My library tends to have a good collection but when I've talked to them about other things (through my job for Girl Scouts) they are just the least helpful library in the world. Seriously. They had an event and I wanted to know who their consultant is and they said they couldn't tell me the name because of privacy purposes. Yet they put it on their old fliers (which I found with some digging). They don't have a bulletin board with area events. They used to have a librarian who gave me the evil eye whenever I came in.

However my OTHER library doesn't have many audiobooks but I could probably totally convince them. I'm in a knitting club there and they'll all super nice and helpful. They offer to do events for me, let me put up posters, let us have meetings there, etc.

So I might try the library of my heart (that I use less frequently cause its size).

Heidi Wow Cassi. That is disappointing. My sister has the same problem - she had some issues with the workers at the library in her town so she goes to the library in our home town about 30 minutes away. Geez the library is supposed to be a happy and helpful place!

message 7661: by Julie (new)

Julie S. Deeper Deeper (Tunnels, #2) by Roderick Gordon is really good so far, and then I think that I will read Half Brother Half Brother by Kenneth Oppel .

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Heidi I wrote: "Wow Cassi. That is disappointing. My sister has the same problem - she had some issues with the workers at the library in her town so she goes to the library in our home town about 30 minutes awa..."

Agreed. Most of the workers are alright. But their mindset bothers me. They don't just want to have a good program...they want to have the ONLY program. They don't seem to see the benefits of like-minded organizations working together towards improving the community.

So despite having great selection I think they're missing the whole point. Which is just sad. (But to be honest, the town I work in where the library is located has a little "we're better than you" attitude. I live in the next town away & it's really different attitude-wise).

message 7663: by Gwennie (last edited Apr 06, 2011 06:59PM) (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I liked Shiver, and Linger. Neither of them is like 'to die for' or anything, lol. But I enjoyed reading them and liked the fact that they weren't action packed and that they were just sweet stories. They were much better then Hush Hush or Fallen.

Does anyone read Maggie Steifvater's blog? I tell ya what, I got a new appreciation for that women when I first read her blog. She's so funny! I'll even read them outloud to my husband sometimes.

message 7664: by Heidi (new)

Heidi I'm sticking with my 3 stars for Shiver, which for me is not bad and not great.

message 7665: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) I think I gave them 4 stars. 3 stars is what I gave those 'Fallen Angel' series.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Heidi I wrote: "I'm sticking with my 3 stars for Shiver, which for me is not bad and not great."

I gave it 2. Darn the curse of a pretty cover! And it really does have gorgeous graphic design (I was briefly a graphic designer). The covers for the other books are pretty too. Sometimes I should know a book isn't for me but I get distracted by the pretty.

message 7667: by Gwennie (new)

Gwennie (blessedwannab) It does have beautiful covers, and I love the ink on the inside.

message 7668: by Becca (new)

Becca | 1608 comments Oh Wendy, she's freaking hilarious! I love her blog and follow it regularly just to get a good laugh, but I have to agree with Heidi in that I can't remember why I liked Shiver so much the first time around and it didn't leave that big of an impression on me, so it must not have been as good as I thought. I must have been in the mood for a really sappy sweet romance or something.

Ouch. I have to stick up for this book. I really, really liked it and could identify with the girl as her story is eerily similar to mine, as if the author had my story (I grew up in GA, lived with my aunt after my mother passed, was relieved/sad that it happened, my extended family and friends became my core family, had my own grieving process, etc.). OK except fast forward 35 years or so... The story is about finding a home and family, and grieving. I don't think it's fair to compare it to The Help when the plot is so different. I'm sorry you didn't like it. I know everyone has different tastes, I just had to put in my 2 cents! :)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) Opinions are allowed? When did this go into effect?

I agree with you on Shiver and Linger Wendy! I liked it for the sweet story :) I have a thing for scenes taking place in bookstores... :p I sometimes read her blog. I almost got fooled by her April Fools prank haha...

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments I can see how some people like Saving CeCee Honeycutt but I just don't think its that well-written.

And part of why you like it so much probably has to do with your life experience. Not taking away from you enjoyment of the book but we all bring our life experiences and perspective into every book we read.

message 7673: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Hey to each their own! I would never try to tell someone what to like or dislike as that is personal. p.s. The only reason I compared The Help to Ceecee was because they were both about race relations in the south around the same time period. The rest of the books are different.

Haha, yeah that cracked me up. One of the blogs that stood out to me was the one where she got her new car and was talking about how it didn't have a Key, just a Fob. I had tears!

Absolutely! I just felt I had to add my opinion for those that haven't read it yet. See, I didn't see it as a book about race relations (though in a small way it was). Actually when the "incident" occurred I was a peeved that it appeared the story would become one (and I had just read The Help, which I thought was amazing). I really wish the "incident" wasn't in the story at all. For me (very much because of my life experience), the story was about CeeCee coming to terms with her past and how her life can be (BTW I read this last year).

Oh, if you liked The Help, I highly recommend The Secret Life of Bees audiobook. I loved it, and recommend the audio version over the book. Amazing!

On the Shiver/Linger topic: I loved the sweetness of the story and the lyrics throughout. I'm a fan of Maggie's blog too :).

I still think about it randomly and giggle. I read it to my husband and he laughed until his eyes watered too. Her blogs are better then her books, imo.

I think that your right about the pretty cover! I read Shiver and Linger and I have to say they weren't my favorite even though i wanted to like them more than I did. And the cover for the third in the series is beautiful too (its red). I would probably give them 2 stars too. For some reason they left me feeling sad and i didn't really like that. :( but a friend of mine loves them and can't wait to read the third!

They left me sad too. But I think they were supposed to. I actually liked them for that. They were poignant and melancholy.

message 7682: by Lloyd (new)

Lloyd | 415 comments I guess I can't help myself. I have started yet ANOTHER book. This one, however, is one of my favorite series. Plus, I have this one in actual book book form. I'm trying to get through it quickly so I can get back to my Kindle. :P

I'm now reading Jack Secret Vengeance (Repairman Jack) by F. Paul Wilson .

Amanda (peanutty222) | 529 comments I just started Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and I'm not getting the hype. I heard it's really good, but I'm 30 pages in and ready to give up. Anyone else read it and like it? Does it take a while to get into it?

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments Reporting live from the YA gossip circus--has anyone else followed the Forever YA vs Lionsgate ridiculousness (the ridiculous being on the supposed Lionsgate lawyer not so much the blog). It's about a script that may-or-may not be fake for Hunger Games that the blog did a review of.

http://www.foreveryoungadult.com/2011...

PS you will find me in the comments quoting actual copyright law which the Lawyer seems to think she can pull out of her bum and threaten bloggers with (and it worked which makes me sad at the state of Freedom of Speech).

(And if anyone is curious about the original blog post that was pulled I totally didn't ever close the window so I've copied it to word & saved it. It was fairly spoiler free with a couple exceptions).

message 7685: by Heidi (new)

Comparing Lionsgate to the Capitol is pretty ingenious.

What crackes me up "Is this is a fake script. By reviewing fake script you are infringing on our copyright." Um...no they're not. And the Lionsgate reaction makes me think it's not fake at all. Because why send a cease & dissist to a blog with a fake script? Just say it's fake & be done.

Cassi aka Snow White Haggard | 2261 comments For the record Daughter of the Forest (Sevenwaters, #1) by Juliet Marillier really did pick up. I just think modern urban fantasy with faes & taxis then rewind to epic fantasy with the Fair Folk takes a bit of time to adjust.

But I'm fully into it now. But why did it have to be a series? That's a commitment folks!
