dely | 5485 comments I have a suggestion for a new "group challenge".

I have stolen the idea in another group but there are a lot of rules to respect and it seems a little bit difficult (though I am brave and joint it). So I wanted to suggest a similar challenge but an easier one also in IR:
Who is the reader of the group who travels more around the world with the books visiting more countries?

I make an example: I was in Italy with "Tosca, the cat lady", I was in Bulgaria with "Solo", I was in Portugal with "Pereira maintains", I was in India with "Shantaram", in Russia with "The Gambler"....and so on.
Of course if I read 10 books set in Italy I can count only one so I will add only one of this 10 books to my shelf "world travel challenge" (this name is only an example).

It would be also nice if everyone who joins this challenge would always say where he was and with which book. This can be easliy done in the comment box of the challenge.

At the end we will see who of us has "travelled" more around the world. There is no present for the winner, only fame and glory!

What do you think about it?

message 105: by Anbu (new)

Anbu (anbutheone) | 4469 comments It is a very good idea.. I like it.. we will see what other mods and members think.. If others also interested, we can start it if we get some more people..

message 106: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47117 comments Mod
yes. dely, you can start it as a thread, we will join in.
Is it a seperate challenge you aim for, or just a thread wherein we enter the places 'we've been to'?

message 107: by dely (new)

dely | 5485 comments Fine, I'm glad you like it.

Smitha, I was thinking something like the Indian Book Challenge in homepage: http://www.goodreads.com/challenges/6...

So there is no nead to make a separate thread with the names of the countries we visit (though I like a lot also this idea) because we can write this information in the challenge, in "comment" under our nickname.

Wow Dely, that's a great idea. Considering the fact that I have never travelled in person but been to so many countries through books this would be amazing :)

message 110: by dely (new)

dely | 5485 comments Fine, I am glad you liked it ^^

Remember, if you read 5 books set in the same country you can count it only once; so add only one of these books to the challenge.
The challenge starts today so we can't add the books read since january?

I would put two countries but unfortunately you can put only one book to the challenge. But in this challenge the important thing is to visite how many countries as possibile. It is not a book challenge but a country challenge.

yes. but the challenge counter will be ticked only if i add the books to that particular bookshelf. so i think only 1 place per book. depending on your logistical constraints.(i can always visit India but Canada will be a bit difficult.so Canada it is!!..) and i would say we post about the place in our comments page of our own challenge....or else others will not know where that book has taken us to....

message 126: by Suchitra (new)

Suchitra (bookpuzhu) | 1030 comments Hi
Can I ask if any of the mods would be able to find time to do a poll....among members as to who has read James Herriot and who has not? Or if it is too particular a question to poll about.....let me know.....
And I will ask each friend individually and find out as much as I can!....

message 127: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47117 comments Mod
You can add a poll yourself. Go to the top righthand corner of Indian readers homepage and click on polls, and then go on to create a poll.
I have not read James Herriot, by the way.

message 129: by Suchitra (new)

Suchitra (bookpuzhu) | 1030 comments Thanks! Have done so!
Do read!
I can assure u that u will enjoy reading them! U may not become a die hard fan like me.....or u may!
I have recommended it to a few friends and only one said that she could not stomach the vet details and so could not proceed....
The rest thanked me for sharing a good book with them.....and most have laughed aloud at some stage in the book!

message 130: by Suchitra (new)

Suchitra (bookpuzhu) | 1030 comments Hi guys!
I got a friend request from someone who has not interacted with me at all in the IR group. I was a bit shocked to see all that person's favourites showed were covers of books with suggestive pictures! This is the first time it has happened to me on goodreads and I hastily ignored the request. Did not see the name too clearly but sounded like dr umar...or Uma.....
I tried to find the name....but now that I have ignored , the name is not stored in my data.
Can friend requests come from any member not just GR group?
Is this person on IR?
If yes,can u do something about it?
If no, how do I report to GR?
Has similar stuff happened to u?
Thanks!

message 131: by dely (new)

dely | 5485 comments Suchitra wrote: "Can friend requests come from any member not just GR group?"

Every member of GR can send you a request.
It happens often that I receive requests from people I don't see in the groups I follow. But perhaps they have seen me commenting a review of one of their friends, or they have seen a friend of them commenting my review and so on and so on.
It happens daily. Why are you so scared? Has he/she written you a vulgar message?

message 132: by dely (new)

dely | 5485 comments What do you mean with "covers of books with suggestive pictures"? Has this shocked you?

u can make sure that people type your mail id to send you a friend request.so the friend request will be restricted..there is option for that...check in your settings...

about reporting i dont have any idea,,

Suchitra (bookpuzhu) | 1030 comments Thanks dely and vinoth!
No dely! Not scared. Am too old for that!
But was wondering how that person got hold of my details to send a request.
I have given my real name and am new to this online chatting and friending people I have not met.......
So was a bit shocked....
But no, actually , no ugly messages...
Probably some guy who sends requests to all women on GR....!

Like Vinoth said, try to change your settings. You can put your profile private, or you can add a question if someone wants to send you a friendship request; then there is also the possibility to hide your email to everybody, if you want to receive private messages only from friends or from every member of GR...there are a lot of things you can change.
You must go in your profile, then click "edit profile" and from here on you can change everything.

Anjali | 196 comments @ Suchitra i got a request from this guy too :(
he gave me a book recommendation for a real sleazy book ...
I just blocked him after that ...:)

message 138: by Suchitra (new)

dont worry, Suchitra, you may ignore him. He must have just chosen in random. If anyone knows the name of the guy, we can monitor him if he tries to join IR

Suchitra (bookpuzhu) | 1030 comments Hi
I was trying to make a list of books to read from the post ......what is the best book u have ever read and best author....
Not easy....
Wondered if we should have a group bookshelf.....called ......
we recommend.......
And each person can post one or two links...or whatever limit we set.....
And I can just click on ones I have not read to add to my list....!!

message 141: by Ahtims (new)

Ahtims (embeddedinbooks) | 47117 comments Mod
there are recommendation threads in this group. There is a thread called 'little known books you'd like to publicize"

Suchitra (bookpuzhu) | 1030 comments do u think we should create a booker prize like prize by indian readers group? IR prize.
i mean..a poll .....every year? from the books we have read as a group or each person nominates one book and then we all vote....
i was thinking about this when i realised that although my name is red has won the nobel prize, it is not really a book i enjoyed reading.
the sense of an ending. was alright. but not great.....
to me , james herriot's books are the best....ok agatha christie's too....ok sherlock holmes too.......and probably more if i think about it....
none of these books have won any prizes, have they? atleast i am not aware.....

so i would like to give a prize to a book i enjoyed reading!

I second Suchitra. That's a great suggestion.

message 145: by Muddle head (new)

Muddle head (adic) | 4646 comments IR awards sounds fun!
We will choose from books that were read in group reads? Else nominations themselves will be very huge - each one nominates one of his choice. If it's the group reads books, the mods can choose from the most successful group reads and put them up for poll - what say?

dely | 5485 comments I like the idea!
Isn't it better to pull in a first poll all the books of the group reads (like a semi-final) and then make the poll with the winners (for ex. the top 5) of the previous poll? So all the books are included.

message 149: by Anbu (new)

Anbu (anbutheone) | 4469 comments Really Great Idea.. Shall we start from 2011? or we shall do it this year end only?
