message 1401: by Shelley (new)

message 1406: by Vonney (new)

Vonney Young (ysgillen67) | 39 comments Still plowing through "The Risk Pool". Must read it by noon Sunday. My sons grew up with an absent (mostly), alcoholic, loser father just like Sam Hall,so I think that's why I'm only at page 125. Creeps too close to home, and I may skip bookclub so as not to hear the discussion. On a lighter note, I picked up "These Is My Words: The Diary of Sarah Agnes Prine, 1881-1901 Arizona Territories" and have not been able to put it down. I feel guilty letting the other book slip away. Maybe I'll try it again later.

I saw the movie to "Like Water For Chocolate" years ago. Very interesting.

I never read the book, but I saw that movie when it came out in 1970 or somewhere around that time. I won tkts to go see it, and it was so gory I spent most of my time in the lobby waiting for it to end. It played during the height of the Viet Nam War.

message 1420: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Now gonna read Extras.

message 1421: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Unfortunately, I ended up giving up on Extras as it doesn't make sense to me and I wasn't getting anywhere with it.

So now I will read A Theory of Relativity

They died instantly.

Or close enough.

Gordon, of course, knew that "instantly" in this context, didn't mean what it seemed to suggest. Several minutes would have passed inside the car after the impact, while the final tick and swoosh of Ray's and Georgia's heart-sent blood swept a pointless circuit, while muscles contracted loyally at the behest of a last volley of neurological commands. But there would have been no awareness, or only a few twilight seconds - and no memory.

message 1422: by Wendy T (new)

Wendy T I'm starting Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins today.

Christa (is on top of the world!) (obsesedwbooks) | 7 comments Nancy wrote: "I have not started Little Bee. Have you??? Why are you on top of the world? I love to hear AWESOME things!"

oh I was when I changed my username, but, I'm not anymore. I kept it because I'm sick of changing my username, and it's got a nice catch to it. I haven't even heard of Little Bee. I probably won't get to read it though because there's enough books on my to read book list to last me a few years or more.

message 1438: by Shelley (new)

Shelley (shelleylynn) Ian wrote: "Hi Shelley, I am a major Tim Winton fan. Try Cloudstreet : A Novel it was the one that brought him his break. And I just recently read Breath: A Novel which was excelle..."

Ian- I will for sure try another of his books- I do have to say I was so sad about the ending of Dirt Music- I feel like he just walked away from the book and didn't finish- I was mad at first but now I realize how much it has made me thought about what the author meant by that and realize it wasn't from lack of "good" writing.

Thanks for the suggestions :)
-Shel

message 1439: by Shelley (new)

Shelley (shelleylynn) Reading a Tale of Two Cities- oh my I don't even know what to say... I have forced myself to continue reading this book because it is supposed to get better. I suppose it has but WOW- its a hard one for me...

Artemis Nitzband | 6 comments Nancy wrote: "So far, I am enjoying it!!!"

Great. I'm doing some light reading the next couple days. I'll start it by the weekend.
I'm worn out from The Known World...it was an incredible book...one of the best I've read in years...besides Shantaram.

La pointe de la sauce (k1ng) | 5 comments I'm reading The Assassins by Bernard Lewis, I just finished Holy War Inc which was a detailed history of al-Qaeda but failed to discuss the groups motivation and twisted beliefs. The assassins goes back to another radical 8 century radical Islamic sect that also used mass murder as a political weapon. After this I have no choice but to go back to Jane Austin's 'Emma' , I have no other books on my shelf!

message 1446: by Lianne (new)

message 1449: by Linda (new)

Linda Miller | 5 comments I am currently reading "Cutting for Stone", Telex from Cuba" and "The Cutting Sword"

message 1450: by Linda (new)

Linda Miller | 5 comments Coming in late on the conversation of how to get the most reading time but I have found that carrying a "LARGE" (lol) purse where any one of my books will fit and carrying it with me at all times gives me extra reading time, when waiting for a to-go order in a restaurant, at the doctors, stop lights, parking lots waiting on someone, in the long grocery check out, at the pharmacy etc......I have become very creative so much that when someone sees me without a book they ask me if something is missing.......
