message 406: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Ok, I finally caved in and bought a copy of The Hunger Games (it was only £4 in the supermarket and I have trouble saying no to bargains. Wanted a nice easy read to chill out with and actually surprised myself by really enjoying it! I wouldn't say its the best thing I've ever read but I did get sucked into the story and I definately want to find out what happens next, although the unromantic anarchist in me has to admit that I'm more interested in finding out if Katniss's act of defiance starts something moving against the Capitol than in how the love story pans out.

J.D. Hughes (jdhughes) | 7 comments Desperation and the love of a challenge has driven me to re-read 'Finnegans Wake' by James Joyce. My new blog post discusses neologisms, of which he was a master. I expect my own writing to be absolute gibberish for a few weeks, as a result.

The Green Mile by Stephen King
The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett

message 423: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I taugfht with frank McCourt when I was a first year teacher in new York City. he used to regale us with his Irish tales and we would tell him to write a book. I later told him about this when I saw him again at a book signing.

message 424: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I'm about to begin the new book by Anna Quindlen, Lots of Candles, Plenty of Cake. I am also listening to a book I read 20 years ago, The Gold Coast by Nelson DeMille. And finally I'm about to read a book on my I PAD, The Good Father by Diane Chamberlain which was just published. I have read this author for the past 20 years and I have never read a book of hers I didn't love.

Wow, very interesting Nancy!

message 426: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm reading:

A Clash of Kings (A Song of Ice and Fire, #2) by George R. R. Martin : Or, well, was reading it, then stopped. I'll have to pick it up again.

Catching Fire (The Hunger Games, #2) by Suzanne Collins : I read the first book at the urging of my cousin, then found I couldn't put it down. The romance didn't really interest me, but the survival aspect did. I don't even think I could put this in the same catergory as the Twilight series; while it is a bit over-boasted to a point and fan-ridden to heck, it was still a rather enjoyable read.

[bookcover:No Return: A Contemporary Phantom Tale]: This is the one I'm currently on, and I have some mixed feelings for it. While it doesn't exactly given off that fanfiction feel, with an enjoyable consistency, I still find myself irritated with this modern "Phantom", and rooting for him at the same time. Still, it is pretty good.

That's great! So far, I am loving this book. Every now and then you come across a book that you've seen a million times and thought "hmm, maybe I should read that" but never get to it. This is one of them. Why? I don't know, but I am glad I picked it up. :)

I hope you continue to enjoy Angela's Ashes and then read both Tis and Teacher Man. It's a pity that McCourt died recently but he had more than achieved his dream of becoming well known as a writer. In addition to teaching thousands of students about the beauty of reading and writing as a high school English teacher.

lol I wanna slap someone's face each time they ask me "what is it about?" when a book like Game of thrones is in question but nevermind :D... I would say in a lighter tone - nobility, its families and their power struggles, how it all affects the common ppl, then some underlying threats... power games, evil things, conspiracies... well it is very gritty I would say

I am reading Memories of Ice (Malazan Book of the Fallen, #3) by Steven Erikson and it is really awesome :P

But yesterdsay I came across Joan Didion's new book about her daughter who died not long ago and became immersed in this book yesterday and today.
