Fran | 12278 comments I finished Simple Gifts yesterday, 2/3. This story was good, but could have been great. Caught my attention right away but in the end I felt that it could have used more backstory on the two guys, especially Robb. I did enjoy it but I wanted more explanation of their history together. 3.5*

Yvonne (selana) I have started to read the 'Stuff my Stocking' anthology and have a question... as it is a collection of short stories, is it okay to skim some that are really cringe worthy? Some of them are really good, but I just can't bring myself to read others. They feel like badly written fanfiction - but without the bonus of me already knowing and liking the characters

message 503: by Joann (new)

Joann | 973 comments I finished Explosive Eighteen on 02.03.12 and rated it 4 stars.

Unfortunately, in order for a book to count in this challenge, you have to read the entire book.

message 505: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne (selana) never mind, I'll read it anyway, just won't add it here

message 506: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne (selana) I have read Club Shadowlands and quite liked it. Finished Feb 7, gave it 3 stars

message 507: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments I read Dudleytown (as first in the series with Simple Gifts). 5 stars.

I loved it for such a short story. It conveyed great atmosphere, had a decent mystery, a well executed attraction and kept me engaged through to the end. :) I'll be reading more by this author!

message 508: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments Jane,

I have Simple Gifts if you ever want to borrow it. It's loanable from Amazon. It wasn't great but it was good.

I actually bought it at the same time as Dudleytown and have since read it, but thanks Fran. It wasn't anywhere near as good as Dudleytown - more 3.5 stars.

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Valerie ~Varuca~ wrote: "Finished Life Lessons today, and absolutely loved it! 4.5* (rounded to 5 for GR)....now I'm off to pick up Breaking Cover-can't wait to read more of Tony and Mac"

Isn't it fantastic?! I loved both books :)

message 512: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments Jane, if you want to post here that you finished Simple Gifts then it will count towards the next list. Maybe we will get some more m/m choices if that one has the highest number :)

message 513: by Nicola (last edited Feb 16, 2012 05:09AM) (new)

Nicola | 649 comments I finished One for the Money (Stephanie Plum, #1) by Janet Evanovich with 3 1/2 stars.
I enjoyed it, but was hoping for a little bit more from the main character. I am not sure how Plum will bumble her way through 17 more stories, but will attempt a few

Remind me to stop using a touch screen, and stop posting when I am half asleep! Sorry for the errors!

I thought Dudleytown did that? ...Can I be counted twice in the one listing?

Well = if so, I finished Simple Gifts too on 13 February :) 3.5 stars

It didn't have the same atmosphere as the first Cornwall novella. Different characters and completely different plot in this second book - which is good. I enjoyed the book. But some of the MC's motivations were a bit hazy and tied together with bits of string.

message 515: by Fran, Moderator (last edited Feb 15, 2012 06:55PM) (new)

Fran | 12278 comments Dudleytown counts for you towards completing the challenge but only reading the exact book counts towards the next list. Now there are 2 for Simple Gifts:)

I thought the premise was great, I really liked how it began. He not knowing the other one was going to be there when he walked up the steps to the front door...but I agree, hazy backstory, motives.

message 516: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Huh! I thought if I read a book in the same series, it actually counted toward the next book calculations... oh well.

message 517: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments @ Jane

Fran is right. Only the exact book counts toward the next list. Books in the same series only counts for having participated in the challenge but usually does not have voting power unless a tie is involved.

message 518: by Valorie (new)

Valorie | 2218 comments I finished listening to Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter yesterday. It was pretty interesting, I gave it 3.5 stars.

Well there you go! ...It wouldn't have changed my reading choices I don't think, but it's good to know :)

message 520: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments I finished An Irresistible Bachelor for An Unforgettable Lady yesterday. At first, I was extremely annoyed with the hero, and was ready to rate the book low. However, by the middle of the story, I felt that it had improved. When it was over, it left me feeling contented, so I decided to give this book 4 stars.

message 521: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 649 comments Quick question - if I read a different book in the series ( i.e. One fo the Money instead of Two For The Dough) does it not count for the challenge?

Thanks - that is what I thought. However when I wasn't listed as competing the challenge I wasn't sure. I will try to read the correct one by Sunday - but the library did not have it in as of Sunday...

message 524: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments Nicola,
Yz must have missed your earlier post where you posted that you finished One For The Money. I'm sure she will add it to the list and you will get credit for completing the list even though it won't count towards the next list.

message 525: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 649 comments No problem -- I just wanted to make sure I was doing the challenges right. I am nt worried about being missed - sorry!

message 526: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments Don't be sorry! You're doing it all correctly :)

message 527: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne (selana) so, if Club Shadowlands doesn't count for selecting the next one, can I add another book? I thought as well that any book of the series counted...

And in general, can I be counted for more than one book if I read them while the challenge goes on?

message 528: by Yz the Whyz, Moderator (new)

Yz the Whyz (whyz) | 9327 comments @ Nicola

Sorry. I must have overlook your post when I was reading the thread. I got too focused with the conversation between Jane and Fran. I've updated the list to reflect your progress.

@ Yvonne

Yes, you can read more than one book for any list, as long as you read the book/s within the challenge period.

Sheila (schmoozy) | 83 comments Just finished Two for the Dough (Stephanie Plum, #2) by Janet Evanovich . I give it 5 stars!

I am really enjoying this series so far. Book #2 was full of laughs and the cast of characters are fabulous. I can't wait to pick up Three to Get Deadly as soon as it becomes available from my local library!

No worries - sometimes these conversations do get pretty interesting!
I just wanted to make sure I didn't have to read another book that quick. I don't want to be up all night trying to finish my monthly challenge book again this month!

Suzanne (esmerelda1) | 2244 comments Random Book List #66

I read Two for the Dough for this challenge. I don't know why I waited so long to read the next book out of this series but it was awesome! Lots better than the first. Debbie Reynolds plays Stephanie Plums grandma in the movie and she did a really good job. The grandma plays a big role in this novel so it would be awesome if they made another movie off of this one! *****

message 533: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne (selana) I just finished Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter today and gave it 4 stars. A fun, enjoyable read

Dee (austhokie) | 7316 comments since I have twelve days in the pile, i'll probably read it

message 536: by Dragana (new)

Dragana (diaryofthebookdragon) I have been delaying reading this series for a long time and ignoring people who urged me to read it. But now I don't see nothing more interesting, so I will go for: The Color of Magic. :)

message 537: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments I've read a few of the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon and enjoyed them. So I will read either Night Play or maybe Somebody Killed His Editor.

message 538: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne (selana) I think I will read A Nanny for Nate as it is free and money is tight. Somebody Killed His Editor sounds interesting too and if I run out of books to read I might even read The Color of Magic again - as if I'd ever run out of books I haven't read yet LOL

Money is tight here too - where are you getting the freebie?

message 540: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments A Nanny For Nate is free? Where?

message 541: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24334 comments Gee - I don't know which book to read... I'll post when I decide :)

just go to the book page, then you can get the ebook there

Ah - the read online option... I just can't quite commit to reading on the computer (online) when I could be slouching with my ereader or surfing goodreads!

Yvonne,
I checked it out and it's only a small sample of the book that is free to read online. At the bottom of the sample is an offer to buy the rest of the book for 5.99.

message 545: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne (selana) Fran wrote: "I checked it out and it's only a small sample of the book that is free to read online"

Darn it, that's not really clear when you look at the page... They could at least say that it's just a sample

message 546: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments I know! That's happened to me before- I thought it was the whole book and it turned out to be a sample :(

It really shouldn't say 'read ebook'

message 547: by Erin (new)

Erin H Going to read Night Play (Dark-Hunter, #5; Were-Hunter, #2) by Sherrilyn Kenyon .

message 548: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne (selana) Fran wrote: "I know! That's happened to me before- I thought it was the whole book and it turned out to be a sample :(

Well, I guess I'll have to see what my library holds then - or I'll re-read Terry Pratchett, that's always good

message 549: by Fran, Moderator (new)

Fran | 12278 comments I finished A Nanny for Nate today 3/15. I really enjoyed it. I wish it had been a little longer and the relationship and its complications given a little more time to explore. But I really liked it, 4*

message 550: by Erin (new)

Erin H Finished Night Play (Dark-Hunter, #5; Were-Hunter, #2) by Sherrilyn Kenyon on 3/15 and gave it 4 stars. Since I started in the middle of the series, I felt the recaps helped me to understand the book. I really liked Bride. I thought she was a great heroine because of the issues that she has with herself and her relationships with men made her really relatable!!
