Patricia, yes to all for option A and C. With B, I'm not sure that the general is a main character in
[book:The General's Daughter. Is he? Has anyone else read it and can say? If so, that would work. If not, one of the other two would work fine.

A4 - Night by Elie Wiesel
B5 - The Wild Orchid: A Retelling of "The Ballad of Mulan" by Cameron Dokey
C6 - Honor's Pledge by Kristen Heitzmann

Unless The Wild Orchid: A Retelling of "The Ballad of Mulan" works for non-US. I have this book and have read it just in the last challenge but maybe I ca squeeze it in at the end.

And, actually, I can't help you because it's Emily's decision. But I will see you tonight ;o).

I would agree that Mulan was a woman in the military, so that works for me!

If you like Stephen King, there's
[book:Silver Bullet. There's also Bullet Park
Mulan would work for non-US as well.

Yep, subtitles are totally okay!

B. If your second die is:
2: Read a book with a Sailor as a main character
I typed in "subject: sailor" at my local library computerized catalog, and came up with suggestions:
Mad Kestrel which they called "women sailors"; they are also pirates; would that count?
Nostromo by Joseph Conrad which they linked subjects "revolutions" and "sailors" -- I haven't read this book so I don't know why my local library links it to sailors
The Sea-Wolf by Jack London which is about an art critic who a reluctant crewman on a long and perilous sea voyage
Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad which I hadn't realized was "sailor"
Not sure I can handle Herman Melville -- I have bad memories of his prose from High School.
Would any of these above suggestions work for "sailor"? Anyone have any other suggestions for sailor? Thanks!

I'd say no on the pirates, and yes on The Sea Wolf and Lord Jim.

I rolled a 1 - 5 - 3
1-Amer. Revolution
My Brother Sam Is Dead
2- Women in Military-
The Good Soldier: The Story of a Southwest Pacific Signal Corps Wac
3-Veteran in title
I Remember Korea: Veterans Tell Their Stories of the Korean War
Hope these all fit okay!
Let me know for sure.

Thank you!
All three of those books would work well!

I can't seem to find much in my Google searches about the General character in descriptions of The General's Daughter. I can nix that one. Thanks for the feedback Emily.

I wish I was more help on that one! I started it, but couldn't finish, so I've no idea if he's a main character or not!

I didn't really expect that pirates would count as sailors which is why it surprised me that my local library's search engine did count pirates as sailors --- Anyways -----
I found a couple of F/SF books that might fit:
Throne of Jade by Naomi Novik
Part 2 of a series. In part 1, a sailor during the Napoleon 1810 timeframe bonds with a newly hatched dragon; and becomes part of the Britain’s Aerial Corps. In part 2, he and his dragon travel to China; according to one of the reviews, "The second book has dragons (excellent), but the first half of the second book traps us on a nineteenth century British ship...... " Which, I haven't read it yet, but sounds like this second book of the series will have more sea adventure and sailors than did the first book of the series.
Weapons of Choice by John Birmingham
from goodreads review: "The impossible has spawned the unthinkable. A military experiment in the year 2021 has thrust an American-led multinational armada back to 1942, right into the middle of the U.S. naval task force speeding toward Midway Atoll—and what was to be the most spectacular U.S. triumph of the entire war. " Sounds like all or almost all of the characters are sailors.
Weapons of Choice definately fits; Throne of Jade is more of a judgement call, but if the reviewer is right, and the first half takes place on a British military ship (albeit in an alternate universe which has dragons), it sounds like to me that it would fit also.
Thanks!

Beth, can you tell me more about the series? I read the descriptions and can't find anything about Special Forces, but I'd like to know what it's about so I can make a better decision!

If you feel that it meets the definition outlined in the body of the task, you can count it.
*War: a phenomenon of organized violent conflict, typified by extreme aggression, societal disruption and adaptation, and high mortality. If your book meets this definition, then it can count.

From Wikipidea -Ghostwalker Series is the name for a collection of paranormal/romance novels by the American author Christine Feehan which feature the a group of men in the Special Forces and young women who have had their psychic abilities enhanced in a secret experiment.
Ghost Walkers are soldiers that signed up for a super solider "black op" program but got more than they expected. They were programmed with different psychic/telekenetic abilities and some type of supoer strength. The women of the books did not get to sign up for anything and most were tested on as children. They all have some sort of psychic ability and maybe a psychic connection to each other

With that, then definitely it would count. The Goodreads description was woefully short!

Talking to my son, the first book seems to be the beginning of a war between the vampires. The war actually starts in the second book, but it is declared at the end of the first book. So I guess I will keep looking. I was really hoping to use this book. I have wanted to read it since my son told me about it. Oh well, Winter Challenge is just around the corner.

Is there another task you can fit it I to for the challenge? Then you could read both books...

With that, then definitely it would count. ..."
Yay! Thanks for asking about that, Beth! I'm in the middle of that series, but I didn't even think about them for this task (I think that's a sign of having too many series going at one time ;o)). Off to shuffle books... again...

If it does deal with the war in some way, it would be okay for this task.

I'm not up to that one yet (still working on #3), but yeah. Awesome series and definitely works!

That one definitely works.

Have you done the "shelf" challenge? Because if you don't normally read Horror, you could definitely use "The Strain" there!!

Unfortunately, I read a lot of horror.....I will just save The Strain for the winter challenge, but thanks for the suggestion

ETA: Just saw that you clarified that this is ok. But I'll leave the book here as a suggestion for anyone else looking for a book with "honor" in the title. Thanks!

That works for the task. The book just has to have a major element of the war listed, so this one totally fits the bill.
