Net Galley
You can use an e-reader if you have one, but you also can either read the PDF format on you computer, or read the book on your computer using a free program from Adobe. I often read NetGalley books on my computer rather than transferring them to my Kindle.
How exactly does one go about downloading these books? Do you have to buy them or do they have free downloads?
Sarah, NetGalley is free in the sense that you get free ebooks in return for posting your review of them on your blog. To sign up, you need to have a blog or website where you regularly review books, and then you request the books you want to read and wait to see if publishers approve your requests. I've only ever been rejected for a couple from picky publishers, and some of them auto-approve you if you review their genre (Christian, romance etc). Then you download the book onto your computer or ereader, read it, write a review, post it to your website, then let the publisher know via the Review section on NetGalley!

Got it!
I got an email a few days ago saying that I've been auto-approved to review any Thomas Nelson fiction titles, which is rather nice!
OMG, I just got approved for An Amish Wedding from Thomas Nelson on NetGalley!!! Cool, I love those books with short stories!
I got approved for An Amish Wedding too! I'm so excited! It went in my junk mail and if I did not see Diane's post I probabl would not have looked in there. I like the short stories too!
Also I got approved for a Children's Book and the are e-mailing me stuff like media and pictures to use with the review. I've never reviewed a book and they gave me all that neat stuff!

Can someone please explain the whole netgallery thing...I dont have a blog but I have heard about this
Mary,You sign up with NetGalley and they offer electronic copies of books in exchange for a review. You need to have a blog that you post your reviews too. I also post all my reviews to GoodReads and Amazon. The more books you review the more likely you are to get approved to review a book. Some publishers are pickier than others about who they allow to review. The program is completely free. Hope that helps!
If you want an idea of what a review blog looks like I have mine here: http://books-camilleelise4.blogspot.com
Camille
haha thanks...I am still confused...your blog is great and mine is boring..here is http://nickswifey09.blogspot.com/
I havent done any reviews yet...but am I set up right? ALso what do I put in my profile for NetGalley?
In my profile for NetGalley I described my interests in books (the genres I like) as well as where I post all my reviews (Amazon, GoodReads, my blog). I let them know how many blog followers I have, and how many new visitors per month I get to my blog. I would recommend stats like that and then anything else that may make you interesting to the person who approves your access to a review book. I personally talk about how I am in law school so I have a good understanding of a broad variety of topics. Talk about what makes you a unique book reviewer and what new perspective you can add.Once you have signed up you are set up. Then you start looking through the titles they have available, and you can click a button to request a review copy. You'll then get an email sometime later (sometimes quickly, sometimes days or weeks later) letting you know if you are approved.
Does that help?
Oh also, you are more likely to get approved if you have a lot of book reviews so you may get rejected by publishers, don't be surprised. I've been blogging and reviewing for NetGalley for more than a year and I still don't have enough for some publishers...
Mary wrote: "haha thanks...I am still confused...your blog is great and mine is boring..here is http://nickswifey09.blogspot.com/"I'm following your blog Mary! I cannot wait to read your book reviews!
So I have my first review to do for netgalley! I'm a little nervous! It doesn't say when it has to be done. What are they looking for in a review? Am I honest even if I don't like it?
Unless they give a date, it's generally up to you when you want to post it! I try to post my reviews around the time the book is published. Yes, be honest even if you don't like - they want real reader feedback. If I don't like a book I try to focus on the good points and then go on to say what I didn't like about the book and explain why, trying to keep the review positive yet honest by looking at both sides of the picture. I don't like writing negative reviews, but sometimes you need to do it.What's your first book?
It's called A Winter Discovery. I just picked it to see if I would get accepted. Its a short story=]

I did too! I'm so excited! And Amy Clipston has been so sweet and popped in to visit my blog and comment on my posts about her books. :)

I just read on Facebook that her husband has had to go into hospital because of a blood clot, though, which is really sad. Just wanted to let people know so they can pray for her family!
Oh no! I will definitely keep them in my prayers! She seem so very wonderful, I hope that her husband is going to be fine!

I see Barbour books has taken the auto approve away from there books. I hope they don't get all picky now with who they allow. I have reviewed tons of there books.

I'm sure if you've reviewed tons of their books they'll still want you. I hadn't noticed that with Barbour but it's been a month or so since I requested a book from them.
Has anyone used Edelweiss? I think I did a review awhile ago and started getting emails from them. They have a reviewers area. I did request one...he Dressmaker: A Novel by Kate Alcott. Have to wait and see if I get approved. It is another book about the Titanic...100 years coming up!Maureen
On the topic of the Titanic and its 100 year anniversary. Did anyone else hear about the controversy over the 100 year "memorial" cruises that some companies are offering?http://travel.usatoday.com/cruises/po...
I read a different article before that had criticism about turning a tragic event's anniversary into a "party cruise."
Do you think this is just capitalizing on a tragedy?
Sounds kind of sick! Last place I would want to be to celebrate where all those people died. I love going a cruise...but I would surely pass on this one!
It is for electronic copies of books only but you can read them either on your Kindle, or on your computer
Thank you for the info about Netgalley. I love it. Barbour Publishing is awesome. I have 5 books downloaded for review. My husband is liking this reviewing idea. Less $. LOL No for winter to get here so I have a reason to stay inside and read, read, read.
Camille wrote: "I agree! I love cruises, but one to celebrate a tragedy just doesn't do it for me..."My in-laws went on a MYSTERY tour that ended up going to memorials in the northeast. Sounded TERRIBLY depressing, but they loved it. They described it as celebrating the lives of people who had died rescuing others, etc. I admit ... sounds heavy for me, but they are real history buffs.
Diane, I didn't realize A Perfect Square was up for review. I'm still editing the ARCs. lol.

I'm intrigued too!
Good question, Jodie!I assume there's something on what you're reviewing that states it's an Advanced Reader Copy. : ) I'm not allowed to change much at this point ... mainly looking for typos, etc. Trust me. That plot isn't changing. Hee hee. I love it!
Camille and Lorie, thanks for ordering!
