Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Claire, No worries. If you're ever stuck with a mind-numbing task and want to distract yourself, you can try a podcast then. :)

Jax, I saw that last week and laughed so hard! I had horrible flashbacks with all that Inner Goddess stuff. Ugh!

message 2352: by Jax (new)

Jax | 831 comments I honestly only managed to read the first three... and moved on...
but I almost fell off my chair laughing about his comment of her inner goddess having furniture which took up space!

Arushi | 3652 comments @Claire - Thanks :) I am much better now. Thankfully. I think Aveeno is available here... i remember seeing it. I've just been taking anti-allergics and getting through it.

@Zeenat - I dunno why he was so gung ho abt mustard oil. We almost never used it. Maybe coz he likes all the flavors to be really out there? I really dunno. But he's totally off it now. Thank god!

But i am still taking meds so am sleepy as all get out. Talk to you guys later :)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Sweet dreams, Arushi! :)

message 2355: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Once I heard there were passages where the female lead talks about her Inner Goddess I knew I could never read it. Way too ridiculous to be fun. Ick!

I went back to the allergist today. A ton of things came back negative. So I went for another bloodtest to test for an avocado allergy. And now I need an epi pen, since the doctor is worried I might accidentally eat the mystery allergen again. Personally, I'm praying I never have to stab myself in the leg!

message 2356: by Arushi (new)

Arushi | 3652 comments Happy Holi guys!!! Hope you have a great day.. and your life be filled with lots and lots of color, always!

@Claire - I also hope you never have to stab yourself anywhere, not just the leg. I know last year you were playing Holi, so it kinda sucks that you're sick this year. Still I am sure this will be all be figured out soon.

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments Dorina is an extra powerful 1st level master. Remember her mentally rebuffing Ming-de? Vamp rank is based on power & *perception* of power. Slights must not go unchallenged, or vamp can lose face, and maybe life.

message 2358: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Thanks, Arushi!

I don't think people here are celebrating Holi on the proper day, anyway. We've had a blizzard! Not exactly great weather to be running around outside in.

I'm beyond sick of the cold. Come on, spring!!

message 2359: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments Sorry. I think I must have misplaced a comment about Dory/Dorina on the wrong thread?

But while I'm here: What is 'Holi'?

I too am ignorant about Holi, gimme info gogogo.

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments I finally have time to read today! and visit goodreads!?!?

I went on vacation last week to Los Angeles to visit family and could barely read. Didn't get to post at all. And so far have been playing catch up... :::Sigh:::

message 2362: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments I wondered where you'd been. Hope you had fun. :)

Zeenat (zeekwon) | 6376 comments Lannister wrote: "I wondered where you'd been. Hope you had fun. :)"

It was both fun and stressful, as most family stuff are ;) It was really hard to eat on a low carb diet though, stupid Gestational diabetes. My vacation weight gain was like 7 lbs, but I already went down to a reasonable number.

message 2364: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Well, so long as you survived in the end!! My family, for the most part, live nearby. I think I'd go crazy if we all went on holiday together.

Hope your diabetes isn't causing too much grief. At least you can hopefully get back into a regular routine now, which will probably help.

Thanks for posting Jax! Reading that made up for all the time i spent wading through 50 Shades. Hilarious.

D.C. (dcmallory) | 152 comments So, I figured that the big case of the US Federal Government against the big 5 publishers for their price fixing caper was just going to fade away into the night (for those who have forgotten, Apple colluded with the big 5 publishers to fix prices of ebooks because Amazon was sewing up the market). So imagine the look of surprise on my face (probably resembled a deer in the headlights look) today when I received a check in the mail in the amount of $135.00 US in relation to the class action suit! Yes! Woo-hoo! Shazam!

Of course, the fact that I bought over 500 e-books in the time period covered in the suit might have had something to do with the amount. But still, I was totally surprised anything came of it at all.

So if any of you purchased ebooks a few years ago and filled out the form to join the class action suit, you might be getting a surprise in the mail as well.

message 2367: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Hahah I only got like 4 something dollars. but that is enough to purchase a book with the amount I have remaining on a B&N giftcard. It was a nice surprise!

What I'm hoping is that this lawsuit was big enough and expensive enough for those companies that they think twice before trying something similar again.

message 2376: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments I am definitely feeling better, but received some sad news. I'm part of the Honors Program at my university, and compared to the general student body it's quite a small community. Two of our students committed suicide in the past two weeks, bringing the total up to 3 suicides this academic year.

I didn't know any of these students personally and so I can't say that I'm grieving, but I do feel very badly for friends of mine who had been more personally affected. The whole program is kind of in shock right now. This whole ordeal was preceded by moving Freshman Honors Housing to a satellite campus about 30 minutes away, and requiring students to live there. It's pretty isolated from the rest of the university, and I don't think University counseling services maintains an office there. So basically the University forced all of our incoming students into an isolated corner on campus and gave them no one to speak with. The whole Honors Program protested the move vigorously and the University didn't listen. It's really upsetting.

Sad, such a waste.
Is the uni reviewing the decision/investigating support? 3 per year seems very high.

message 2380: by D.C. (new)

D.C. (dcmallory) | 152 comments Anytime someone takes their own life it's a sad day. While it seems strange that where the student's are housed would make a difference, it seems to have something to do with the tragedy.

Another group of people with high suicides rates are members of the US Military. I heard a figure that was either 22 suicides an hour, or 22 a day; I need to look it up again. Either way, it's unacceptable. I don't see why we can't get these people some help with their psychological issues. We can waste money on getting them in this state to begin with.

Do you mean my avatar? He's wearing a necklace with keys and has them between his teeth.

message 2382: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments Sarah, thanks. It just occurred to me to tap the photo to enlarge it. Now I can see the keys! I'd been wondering about that ever since I joined the group. Nice photo.

message 2383: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments It is odd that they all live in the same building. In the official report said "there is no indication that these deaths were caused by a criminal act". I feel horrible for their families.

@Duane I'm pretty sure the statistic is 22 a day. Either way it's still unacceptable.

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments So I was supposed to take two midterms today. I was so stressed I didn't fall asleep until after 2:30am and then I woke up at 6:30 to study. The second midterm was supposed to be supervised by a grad student because the professor couldn't be there. And then...HE DIDN'T SHOW UP. And so I stayed up all night freaking out for nothing. And to make matters worse, the exam got moved to the same day I have another exam that's more difficult. AHHHH.

message 2393: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments Ah, Claire, that's awful. But you have studied for today's exam. Hopefully you will retain that knowledge well enough till the exam.
Best wishes for relaxing and studying efficiently for the harder one.
Good luck with all your exams.

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Thank you!! Sometimes I wish I was a regular old liberal arts major. Then I remember how awesome math is and I change my mind. But I really wish I could avoid the theoretical classes.

@Claire - I am sure it will work out. Like Kathleen said, you did study for this exam beforehand, so I am sure you will do fine :) And yeah.. sometimes it can be annoying but since you love math... I am sure its worth it :)

Was that your last mid term?

Hopefully you'll be around her more for awhile?

I just finished the second Aliens book by Gini Loch, am starting the third, and have ordered the next two. Love them! Thanks again.

I have 2 take come midterms, and finals are less than a month away. So I'm not looking forward to the coming weeks, but hopefully if I begin preparing in advance it won't be so bad.

I'm really glad you like the Alien novels! It's one of my favorite series now.
