Arushi | 3652 comments Hey... so I am around for now... hopefully I will stick around for a while :) but there is a bunch of shopping still left.. so the minute that starts.. I shall be gone again.

Anyways. I know!!! Even I can't get over how cool the venues look!!

I don't mind sharing info on the wedding outfits...
The wedding dress is going to be a red silk lehenga.. completely covered in golden "zero patti gota work"
Its still being made.. so I don't have any pics yet.
But that is the dress for the baraat reception and the var-maala (basically my fiance and I put a garland of flowers around each others neck after he comes in a huge wedding procession)

The dress I'll wear for the actual wedding ceremony is an orange lehenga with kundan work.. and a tri colored dupatta (red, pink and orange). Its way lighter than the red one.. so I will be comfortable during the ceremony.

And I am wearing a baby pink and golden brocade lehenga with a dark pink "rai bandhej" dupatta for my engagement.

Haven't gotten a dress for the sangeet yet.

or the casual dresses to wear during the days either.

I know my friends will put pics up on facebook before I ever get around to it. I also know that once I get around to it, I will make an album and share it with you guys as well :)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Wow, so many outfits! You guys don't do things by halves in India. :D

I had to google some of the terms you mentioned, as they weren't familiar to me, but boy the dresses look amazing. You'll be so beautiful! I can't wait to see the pics. :D Also, what's the sangeet? I googled it and it seemed to mean music?

I'm so happy for you, Arushi, you're going to have an amazing wedding!

message 2553: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments I am so jealous that I can't see that stuff! I always remember Indian anything being awesome to look at. Especially some of the art. Congrats bunches on that, just the idea of the shopping gives me hives.

Oh, I think I forgot to mention that my sister finally got pregnant ... with twins. She is due in Febuary. She declined my sister Angie's and my suggestions for names though. :( The twins are a boy and a girl, Angie's suggestion was Bonnie and Clyde (how boring). Mine, mainly because I like the name Diego, my brother in law liked the name James and that is spanish equivalent, the other reason? That I thought of as I was sending the text was that she could name the girl Dora, then she could randomly yell "vamanos!" and tell them to find their own shit.

I thought it was funny....

message 2554: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Wow, congrats to your sister! Will these be her first children or does she have kids already? Two at once must be a bit daunting. Bet Aunty Llaph's going to get roped into babysitting LOL!

message 2555: by Missdevora (new)

Missdevora | 2142 comments Wow Arushi...l had no idea that you get to wear so many pretty dresses...l also googled :) Can`t wait for the photos and l know you will look beautiful.

Congrats to your sis, Llaph! Diego and Dora are beautiful names...and Dora can turn to Dory :)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Congrats on the good news, everyone!!

I've been MIA because of midterms, which have been awful. This weekend was a lot of fun but goodness was it crazy. I got my cartilage pierced on my left ear, then it was my friend's 21st birthday. We ended up going on a bar crawl that started around 1, so I didn't get home until after 4am. And then we were up early to go to brunch. So right now I feel like I've died, but this is the craziest weekend I've had at college.

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Haha, that sounds like a fun time! It's good to blow off some steam now and then. Hope you've recovered by now. :)

message 2561: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments That's cool but also terrifying. No way would I get in that pool. Looking down into the giant pit at the bottom would freak me out!

message 2562: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments LOL, who knows what's lurking at the bottom!! (I'm thinking of that movie The Abyss now)

message 2563: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments Wouldn't bug me :P

Short story, when I went swimming for the first time after losing my sight I acted like I noramlly do in water. One thing is egg beaters with one leg to spin myself around. and didn't think about it screwing up my internal positioning and had to find the edge of the pool. Good thing I wasn't in a lake or river, yanno?

message 2564: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments That's actually a bit frightening! I feel for ya. :(

message 2565: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments Okay, a guy friended me on goodreads and I accepted because he had lots of books and friends and people following his reviews. Only it turns out he's one of those guys that's just friending random girls to talk to them. I'm totally justified in ignoring his message, right? It's got horrible grammar!!

message 2566: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments One is always justified in ignoring all unsolicited messages, IMO.

I do think, though, that you should anonymously report him to the grammar police.

message 2567: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments Claire, yeah, ignore him or unfriend him if it gets really awkward. I had a guy like that once too. I replied to his first message, since it was quite friendly, but his subsequent messages started to make me uncomfortable. If he gets seriously creepy, report him, but otherwise ignoring and *do not* reply is the best course. He'll get tired and move on to something else.

We need to have standards, though. If I'm going to be stalked, he'd better know how to use an apostrophe or I'm going to laugh in his face!! :D

message 2568: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments He was like "ure really pretty n i like ur books" and I was like.....are you even a real person? Do real people actually write like this??

message 2569: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments Stupid people do. There seems to be a segment of the population that thinks writing in text-speak will impress on you how Kewl they are.

Or maybe he's really about twelve, socially tone deaf, and using someone else's photo. In any case, best ignored.

message 2571: by Lannister (new)

Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments I see the Goodreads Awards nominations have begun. There's no 'Paranormal Fantasy' category this year, just regular ole fantasy. Is that a sign that people are sick to the teeth of sexy vampires and shifters?

Hm, might be. I wonder what the sales figures for these books are.

I personally enjoy vampire and shifter stories but I'm sick of the supposedly sexy alpha males (who are really just rude, jealous stalkers) and prefer unusual (multi-faceted? evil?) characters.

Yup, agreed.

I've been a bit fed up with UF for a while. There are still a few series that I'll follow to their conclusion, but I don't feel all that inclined to seek out new ones, unless they are *very* highly recommended. Everything started to feel a bit, well, samey, with the smart-mouthed women involved in some or other world-threatening supernatural crisis.

Mostly, though, I blame Guy Gavriel Kay. After I started reading his books, I literally didn't want to read anything else. :P

message 2575: by Llaph (new)

Llaph (llaph) | 3285 comments I agree for the most part. It stinks that the series that I have grown to love are ending and if I search out similar stuff I find a mixed bag … some totally crap, blatently copying a good series, or stuff that tries too damn hard but has a good foundation. I don’t really want to grow with a favorite series again sometimes.

I did recently read a book (The Lycan Hunter) with shifters where the alpha wasn’t an alpha-hole and the story didn’t revolve around sex. Though to me it seemed like more of a fantasy than a pnr book. I won’t go into it because I am pretty sure I will gush about it.

message 2576: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Gresham (kathleengresham) | 2637 comments For me the standard for urban fantasy is Charles de Lint---even when some of his stories are rural. It is *our* world, but strange things happen.

By that standard most of what passes for UF is pure fantasy in that the fey are acknowledged by the govt. and live on reservations, as in the Mercy Thompson and Merry Gentry series, or vampires have gone public as in the Sookie Stackhouse books, or werewolves as in the Kittyverse.

So by that standard, the Walker Papers would be UF, but most stories told from the viewpoint of a paranormal insider like Cassie would not...
I think some fall on the borderline, but mainly I would call them alternative universe (AU) stories.

There is also a lot of SO- SciFi that is really fantasy, IMO.

To me, real Urban fantasy has a sense of wonder, of amazing worlds impinging on our mundane one.

That's also one of the reasons why I love the fact that KC keeps writing awesome books with awesome characters. A large portion of the market just wants to see poorly written, flat storylines they can swoon over.

Though now that you mentioned disliking Alphas, Billionaires and Cowboys in the same sentence... did anybody else get a sudden image of Mircea from the rodeo scene in CtD? ... Damn... Ah well. xD

Exactly! Not to mention the romance you unfortunately have in UF series as well. Some gorgeous (often rich) shifter/vampire/etc. shows up and you have to endure the usual "we can't be together/he's hot/he's a jerk/I hate him/I love him" for 10 books. And then they end up together. Oh, what a surprise!

Angel (darkfae_angel) | 207 comments Stupid cold is now a full blown sinus infection. I hate being sick. I'm going to cook up something warm and sweet. Maybe brownies. I love the smell of brownies baking (not that I can smell right now). At least they are warm :)

message 2581: by Claire (new)

Claire (claire1) | 4451 comments No problem, Jax! I'm glad you like them!

@Angel I'm sorry you're sick! Sinus infections are the worst, but at least antibiotics will have you feeling better in a day or two.

I haven't baked anything in a week or two but I did just buy Chocolate Candy Cane cookies from Whole Foods. They're sandwich cookies that taste a little bit like Thin Mints...I'm struggling not to eat too many!

I don't know when she'll be back online, given how they like their weddings in India, but lets all wish her a great day and she can see the messages next time she checks in? Lannister (lannisteruk) | 10911 comments OMG, Llaph, that review is hilarious!!

if I were writing a book about a dude being forcibly sodomized by his dinosaur boss, I’d give that dinosaur boss a fucking dinosaur name like Mr. RazorClaws McSharpTeeth.

I died laughing! :D

I don't think however that I can quite bring myself to read this book. Even though it's free. What is it with dino porn? I remember reading something about this a while back, and apparently there's a whole sub-culture dedicated to 'monster' porn. Oh well, whatever floats your boat I suppose!

MissDevora,
Happy Birthday!! Hope you have/had a great day! :D

Thank you for the well wishes! It didn't go as smoothly as I'd hoped, but no one seems to have done well so there should be a substantial curve.

Just happy to be home! How is everyone's holiday season going?
