Yes, and there are usually 1 or 2 unexpected ones.

Dale Harcombe | 6915 comments Glad to see Port got the win tonight.

Yep, pretty pleased about that.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) I had a stitch by the final siren, what a hectic last quarter. Great to see Paddy being dominant in the ruck, but yeah we need Lobbes back so Paddy can go forward and give us more options.

Cats have their first points on the board now too!! Yay!

message 1058: by Dale (new)

Dale Harcombe | 6915 comments Thought that would make you happy Brenda. Meant I tipped all 9 this week but then no upsets, so lots of people would have picked the card.

Well done Dale :) We missed one!

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) I picked the Saints, what was I thinking

message 1061: by Sarah (new)

Sarah What sport are you guys discussing?

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Hey it was close at half time....

Not soccer, not rugby or union - it's Aussie Rules Sarah - not sure if you would have heard of it in the US?

message 1064: by Liam || Books 'n Beards (last edited Apr 20, 2015 06:40PM) (new)

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) I've managed to get an American friend of mine into AFL. I told him he can support any team as long as it isn't a) Victorian or b) the Crows, and he picked bloody Sydney.

message 1065: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I haven't heard of it, I'll have to look it up. I'll make sure to fall in love with it and become a fan of Victorian or the Crows. Or maybe bloody Sydney ;)

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Here's some footage from the weekend :P

message 1067: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Good God, HOW BIG IS THAT FIELD?!?!?!

message 1068: by Liam || Books 'n Beards (last edited Apr 20, 2015 07:12PM) (new)

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) 160 metres by 130~ I think Etihad is, but the weird thing about the AFL is that every field ("oval") is different. The SCG (Sydney Cricket Ground) is basically a circle, much shorter than everywhere else, Simonds Stadium is much narrower.

I love educating foreigners :P

message 1069: by Sarah (new)

Sarah That's absolutely huge. Those guys must be in incredible shape. That's interesting about the shapes of the circles. It seems like it would enhance the home field advantage.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Most players will cover at least 10km in a game, more likely 15 kilometres plus, 20km is elite midfielder territory.

And yeah there is definitely a home field advantage for some teams.

Smart friend , Liam.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Another thing about AFL is that pretty much every photo ever taken of the game looks absolutely ridiculous.

message 1073: by Sarah (new)

Sarah That photo is hysterical! I'll check the link tomorrow, Michael. It won't work on my phone.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) I was sitting off to your right, Michael, since I had a non-member friend with me and had to sit in general admission seating >:\

message 1075: by Dale (new)

Dale Harcombe | 6915 comments Amazing first half score line in that and Freo/ Sydney game. Well done to Port and Freo to hang on when the charge came.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Love all the people "Ooh gave up a 41 point lead nice fade out Port"

Not every day you can afford t o give up 35 points against Hawthorn :P What a game. Got there late with my non-member friend so had to stand on the hill, ended up being great, absolutely fantastic atmosphere in the standing room.

message 1077: by [deleted user] (new)

Not Australian - But I love Ice Hockey and my team blew themselves out of playoffs :((((

That's OK Melissa...ice hockey is a good sport too:) We don't get much of it here but I have seen it on TV on occasion:)

Hehe, It is a bit of a stereotype - but we really do love it here in Canada. Especially a hockey game against our neighbours to the south.

Appropriate sport for your weather over there I think:)

Indeed, although Soccer (football) and rugby are gaining their popularity over here.

Ahh that's good to hear (about Soccer) I really enjoy soccer:) Dislike rugby intensely though:)

message 1083: by Mez (new)

Mez Haha Melissa I briefly got into Ice Hockey when I first saw the mighty ducks ;)

As for AFL, I hope my mighty kangas can knock off the hawks this week!

There's a couple of interesting matches for tipsters this week Merryn. You'll find out as you go along there are a few of us AFL fans here. I'm a Sydney supporter.

message 1085: by Mez (new)

Mez Oh Michael, Port are one of my most hated teams :P haha

I'm pretty sure in Canada, if you don't at least watch playoff or olympic hockey, they revoke your citizenship lol :p

message 1087: by [deleted user] (new)

... almost a week later and I am still sad my Vancouver Canucks got blown out of the playoffs. But, on the bright side, no one rioted over hockey this year (this actually happened in 2011, it was a nightmare)

No accounting for taste, some people. I was a big fan of the Kangaroos when you guys let us beat you a couple weeks back :P

Showdown on sundee, get pumped. Neither team being allowed to hold its training sessions on the Adelaide Oval because they're playing bloody soccer there this week. What even. Also Crows' performance last Sunday has only given me hope.

A friend of mine went to Canada for six months, he said ice hockey was the most boring sport he'd ever seen :P

Hahahaha! Oh no worries, I am happy to run with the excuse that we LET you win :P
I have despised port ever since you guys smashed us in the prelim all those years ago.... and Tredrea bowed to the crowd!

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) What a legend Tredders was :P

message 1091: by Mez (new)

Mez Liam wrote: "What a legend Tredders was :P"

No No No. I feel like I am way outnumbered here haha.

Man, would hate to be a Carlton supporter right now...

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) I tipped them cos Collingwood are sort of eh and I thought they'd stand up for Mick's big night. Apparently not :(

I like Carlton and I'm not sure why.

message 1093: by Mez (new)

Mez Haha Carlton are my "second team" as my fathers side of the family follow them. I was hoping they would at least put up a fight for Mick!

message 1094: by Dale (new)

Dale Harcombe | 6915 comments Have to say I picked Collingwood but nothing like this score.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) As if he wasn't already.

message 1096: by Dale (new)

Dale Harcombe | 6915 comments Michael wrote: "Me too Dale. I was expecting the Blues to show some sought of fight in Mick's milestone game. I think he will be under pressure to keep his job on that performance."

Yes, Carlton were pretty pathetic.

I hope for your friends safety he didn't go say that to a Canadian. We may be known as a polite, friendly country ... until there is hockey involved (more specifically when there is hockey against the USA, but that is a story for another day haha)

But it's funny, I think the big attraction to Hockey here is that it is so culturally ingrained. Many Canadian kids have gone out in like -40 weather to play a good old game of pond hockey (In warmer weather it is road hockey).
I'm fairly certain even Canadian Parliament shuts down for the big Hockey Games lol :P

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Yeah I can understand if you've grown up with it but I can't see the appeal at all unfortunately.

Also back to AFL for a second, holy Bulldogs batman! Footscray playing with a purpose for the first time in years.
