Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Considering their form this year versus the Crows', I wouldn't have thought it would be a difficult decision!

Also Jess, Michael, either of you going to the game on Saturday? If you get me a copy I'll do your washing up for a month!

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Man, on the one hand I really don't feel good about that - Brisbane are where we were a few years ago, I feel for them.

But on the other hand, YEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Damnit :P

Great show in from Sammy Gray! Never heard of him before today!

★ Jess | 3071 comments Didn't go but had someone buy a copy for me :) Its nice to be on the right end of one of those scores for once.

The next four weeks are very important and should determine just how good we are.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Bugger about the crows winning, but.

Agreed, Jess, especially West Coast and Freo. They'll really test our mettle.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) I've got plenty of faith and I am 90% sure we'll make the finals. I'm just not sure the boys are gonna land that top 4 spot everyone's talking about.

message 857: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments I think top 4 is a bit premature. We could be anywhere from 5th-9th though. I'd be disappointed if we finished anywhere lower. Premiership window opens next year.

If we win 3 of the next 4 though, who knows?

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Man I wish I could go.

Great game, although I was on the edge of my seat screaming at the TV for the entire time. Pretty happy with how the boys stood up to a tough side in a pressure situation, although just like last year the Eagles' goalkicking was atrocious.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) I know, I know.

If Rugby 7s, golf, tae know do and synchronised swimming are in, then why not our great game?

Because very few other countries play the game. Rugby is played world wide as is golf and tae whatever. You've got me beat with synchronised swimming though. I though I heard it was being taken out.

There is very strict criteria for a sport to be included - and a majority of participating countries has to play it before an application can even be made. Also the hosting nation gets to pick which sports it wants included to a maximum of 28. There are 25 core sports that it must have and then a list that the other 3 can be picked from.

Because its not played outside Australia

According to the AFL website, Aussie Rules is played in 19 countries outside Australia, with more than 100,000 participants overseas. So there is a way to go, but the quest to seize the five glittering rings has already begun. We just don't know it yet!

What is AFL?

Well, now that's interesting. For those of us who are not Aussies, here is the Wikipedia site about the game.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) The Portress? I think so.

message 869: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments I really hope "The Portress" catches on, to rebut that stupid "crowval" nonsense. Amazing win tonight, was there with my brother and just felt so proud. We've got a great bunch of players and coaches. Beating Geelong was unreal.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Beat them convincingly, too. I wasn't sure of their ability to contest the top teams but they've definitely proven themselves. Next few weeks will be great to watch I reckon.

Dale Harcombe | 6915 comments I came home from a music meeting and watch the taped Port/Geelong game. Great game to watch so long as you didn't support Geelong. Poor Brenda will not be happy. I was, as I tipped Port.

But philosophical Dale! It's early in the season too, and Port played the better game by far!

message 874: by Dale (new)

Dale Harcombe | 6915 comments True Brenda and it is only April. I'm sure Geelong will still be there at the end of the season.

message 875: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (nicehotcupoftea) | 835 comments Michael, that was one tip I got wrong. And a massive Hawthorn win has set up my weekend nicely too!

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) It figures that the one time I tip the goddamn Crows they lose.

Scrappy game for Port, hopefully they get their asses in gear for Freo.

Also I cannot stand games at non-venues. Wellington or Darwin or Hobart or Canberra. They're lucky if they get a thousand people in, including TV and crew. They can get their own bloody footy teams if they want games.

message 877: by Liam || Books 'n Beards (last edited May 05, 2014 06:36PM) (new)

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) When Victorian footy press is praising Port more than South Aussie footy press you know there's some bias at work.

I hate this state sometimes.

I also liked that the Crows crowd was booing Bernie Vince - the Crows kicked him out, what did they expect, he was just going to retire?

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Fantastic work from the boys. Great to see their fitness being so obvious!

message 879: by Ross (new)

Ross McDonald | 4 comments Any rugby league fans out there?
I'm a Parramatta fan wondering if our success early in the season is for real,or is it just another cruel tease from my favourite team.
No matter,Eels for life!

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Christ, Sydney fans have gotta be stoked with their club spending so much money on their forward line.

One player who's been absent for 60% of games and one player who sprays a dozen goals.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Nah I was working until midday today so I wouldn't have been able to make it :(

DEFINITELY going to Hawthorn - 7pm start, no excuse not to get there :P I have not been to the footy in an absolute age though so I'll probably drag someone along so I'm not terrified.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Tickets bought! I'm committed now.

message 883: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments Was at the Freo game with my brother, had a bad feeling leading up to the match and was v worried for most of the first 3/4. Such a good win :) Bring on Hawthorn!

Adelaide Oval is the best thing to happen to South Australian sport and possibly the city.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Nobody liked AAMI except the Crows.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) I will be standing cold and alone on the Hill because all my friends suddenly have plans this weekend :(

message 886: by Liam || Books 'n Beards (last edited May 19, 2014 08:30PM) (new)

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) I should bring a seat...

This'll teach me for not getting a membership.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Is that the Silver membership? They're sold out >:/

Might have to treat myself to a Gold or Platinum one then...

message 888: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (nicehotcupoftea) | 835 comments ...and I'm a little worried about my injury ravaged Hawks' trip to the Portress!

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Well I actually gave my two general admission standing tickets away to the Alberton Crowd to give to some Port people who couldn't afford tickets :P

This will be my view from my new Gold Membership seat in the Eastern stand :D

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Nah went whole-hog and got a season membership. I've missed 4 games, but I actually want to go to the rest of Port's home games this season.

My wallet is a little sore but it's payday, so I can safely ignore it for now :P

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) AAMI being such a hassle to get to was one of my main excuses for not going. Can't say that anymore.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Oh god my throat, ears and legs are dying slowly and it was beautiful.

message 893: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments My throat was so sore after this. Such a great night, the atmosphere was unreal. Loving Port at the moment :)
Followed by that crows loss, it was a good weekend of sports results aha

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) I caught the last quarter of the Crows/Blues game, it was pretty goddamn intense. Never cheered so hard for Carlton in my life.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Half-time in the Melbourne game, what the hell are Port doing!! They're playing like they don't give a shit.

message 896: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments Melbourne deserved to win, but Port turned it on when needed. That game reminded me so much of that north melbourne game

message 897: by ★ Jess (last edited May 31, 2014 02:27AM) (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments Hopefully Butcher gets a game against St Kilda. Westhoff and Shultz haven't looked as dangerous with him out of the side, and he seems to be doing ok in the sanfl

Monfries, Hartlett and Jonas to come back too :)

message 898: by Liam || Books 'n Beards (last edited May 31, 2014 05:41AM) (new)

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) God I was so cross at 3/4 time. So glad Port are able to win the close ones, and a good performance from Robbie in this 100th.

Wingard should be fine, he was up and about late in the game and afterwards was pretty chipper apparently, more cross with himself than anything else. There's a bit of a shadow over Hartlett, I don't think Kenny is very happy with him giving away an easy ban like that. Concerned about a lot of players today, Matty White and Robbie both pulled up short with their legs a couple of times. Bit of a worry :(

Odds that Schulzy gets a one-match ban for when he slapped that Dees player in the chest? Looking forward to Gus and Jonas being back, though.

So many people on social media calling for Jasper to get the boot - I love the guy :(

message 899: by ★ Jess (new)

★ Jess | 3071 comments Jasper gives me a heart attack every time he has the ball for more than a few seconds. He does some really good things, but also some really, really stupid things. His spot is safe though. If he was to be dropped, he already would have been.

Concerned about Boak too, will probably miss the next game from that no risk policy thing. Lots of small injuries, hopefully everyone is fit for the sydney game.

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Schulzy got reported for that chest-slap! Absolute bullshit. He's challenging it, and good on him too - that he gets pinged for that but Adam Goodes gets off from elbowing Selwood in the face.

I guess the chances of the MRP suspending an aboriginal player in the Indigenous Round are next to nil.
