B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) I'm another one who doesn't watch the news but I caught a glimpse of it on the early ABC news last night; shocking. I have no idea how you even start to get your home back in order after flooding and mud damage. I'm a clean freak - I'd have to just walk away!

My girlfriend still has no power and can't wash her clothes - which is ok because a tree came down and squashed her hills hoist!!!

Trusty daughter-in-law and friends are taking her washing in - and more importantly alloing my friend access to a hot shower and a hair dryer :)

Liam || Books 'n Beards (madbird) Had to get up early to go open one of the libraries. It's the quietest branch at the best of times and since it's pissing down there's even less people coming in.

Got the place to myself other than the council customer service folks. Time to read.

They're talking next week for some poor people!

My daughter texted me with the exciting news "My power is on!!!" It was 7pm - she raced to the Woolies supermarket to shop; just started when the fire alarm went off. They were evacuated to the car park; a friend who works in the store told her they had just sent a heap of people over to the nearby Coles who were running low on stocks!!! She went to Maccas!! :/

I am very grateful we didn't lose power and grateful we had no damage.

So many people doing it tough. I especially really for the people in Hinton and Gillieston Heights who have been completely cut off by flood waters.

The local Maccas and KFC are doing a roaring trade from it all.

(One of my sons is enjoying the extra week of 'holidays')

Well that took longer than I thought! The garage is cleaned out; lots of things in the bin; lots of mess tidied! Am now onto my second load of washing wet, smelly, yukky towels!

Nappisan will do the trick. Or a bottle of coke a cola - kid you not. My husband's dad worked down the cole mines and mother-in-law reckons that coke was the only thing that got his overalls clean!

Thanks Sally...they're only old raggy things so I'm not too worried. But the thing about coke is scary! What does it do to a person's insides! Thank goodness I haven't had it in a lot of years!

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Just watched the ANZAC Day commemorations on ABC, 25th April, the day which makes me so proud to be an Australian. Today's centenary made me cry.

When the last post is played I become a blubbering mass! I watched it too. I am SO proud of the Aussies and the New Zealanders who 100 years ago today formalised Australian mateship! Men (and the ladies who were over there as nurses) who came from all parts of the country, all walks of life and all sorts of beliefs - put aside their differences and fought as one. They went to hell and back but still showed compassion for the enemy and told jokes and played pranks. Something that our modern soldiers do today.

May we never forget.

message 19123: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments I went to a dawn service this morning in my local area - just a suburban one - and there must have been over a thousand people there!! I couldn't even see the speakers etc, just hear them. I've never been to a dawn service there before, but wonder whether the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli stirred more people than just me to get out of bed early this morning, or maybe the dawn service is always well-attended here...

I'm now enjoying an ANZAC biscuit as I think about this morning's service, which was nicely done. I think I'll go again next year, but might get there a bit earlier than this time (although I was 15 min early anyway - I thought that was plenty of time!).

One of our locals sang a song she'd composed, and it was very seriously the best song I've heard for this occasion. Just beautiful - both words, tune, and singer.

We get a couple every year - Vancouver is right smack on top of the san andreas fault (they have been predicting "the big one" for years").
No damage generally, just a bit shocking when the ground starts moving haha
