So distressing to try to save an injured animal, only to get problems with those you turn to. I think that in general, the vets are the best option. They can contact wildlife carers, if necessary.

Neko Oh what a frustrating day for you Faye! We rescued baby ring tails this year, they are always twins, their mum died....so tiny and very, very cute! I so wanted to keep them haha...but didn't take me 20 calls just two. Sounded like they didn't care that much :(

So would I be, Faye. But then again I would want to know, but that's just me of course. Remember whatever the outcome, Faye the little possum was given a second chance which is thanks to you. Keep us posted if you find out either way.

Oh Faye, sometimes WIRES simply does not have enough people to deal with all the jobs needed. But now, you do have the number in case there's a next time. I had a similar experience recently and like you, found no-one seemed to have the correct phone number. The Vet wouldn't help, the Ranger wouldn't help, the RSPCA wouldn't help; it's sooo frustrating, isn't it?

But you did the possum a good turn by not leaving it to be on the ground to be mauled by dogs! I wouldn't ring the vets, why make yourself feel any worse? You can't change the outcome. You are a good person for helping in the beginning!

Wonderful of you to post this, Brenda. Signed, supported and sent on to people I know.

message 15212: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn | 9869 comments Thanks for posting that Brenda. The number of horses that are bred for the racing industry and then discarded is horrendous, especially when a few people are making a fortune out of it and hordes of gamblers are losing huge amounts of money.

message 15213: by Sally906 (new)

Sally906 | 89 comments I had a horrendous day yesterday - just need to vent. I HATE cancer!!!!

Late yesterday afternoon I found out my 3rd friend in 3 months had died - each of my friends had been fighting the disease valiently - each lost.

I have one more friend who is terminally ill right now - although she assures me she'll beat it. I hope she does.

Dissapeared into my books last night for comfort - feel better this morning - more resigned. Gee I wish they'd find a cure!

My boss is back at work today - so the good thing is she'll keep me so busy I won't be able to put my head above water for most of the day!!! :)

Vent over - you can resume normal transmission

Oh gosh Sally, I feel your pain and sadness, I lost one of my closest friends two years ago and my other bestie has just been told she has cancer...so here we go again! I am trying to keep positive for her but boy it is hard, I don't have a huge array of friends just 2 or 3 close ones and they are dwindling.Keep your chin up.

message 15216: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments Thoughts and prayers with you and your friends' families, Sally. I agree - cancer is just awful. Hope your day goes as well as can be expected today... And hope you have things planned for the weekend that can help to distract you a little :-/

And I think some of the research into cancer sounds promising - let's hope that cure comes sooner rather than later!

My thoughts are with you Sally. I don't think there is anyone that hasn't been touched by cancer in some way. My best friend died 12 years ago leaving behind a husband and 2 teenage daughters. Not a day goes by when I don't think of her.

That is awful Sally. Cancer is a terrible disease, especially when it affects younger people with young families. So sad to hear you've had so many friends affected recently.

The problem with cancer is that pretty much every person's cancer is different. There are new treatments and drugs coming out all the time but cancer cells are very good at finding new ways to beat them so most of the new drugs don't work for long. There's a lot of hope in immune therapies these days - training the body's own immune system to fight the cancer.

Hi Faye: In Victoria, a vet has to provide first aid (at a minimum) to injured wildlife free of charge. Remember that WIRES is a volunteer-only, unfunded organisation -- the job they do is amazing given their limited resources.

I haven't read all the posts yet, but I'm hoping the possum survived.

Hi Vicki, I get they are volunteers, but seriously to make 20 phone calls and get nowhere everyone I spoke to said ring so and so, then that person would say of no you will have to ring so and so. The vet took the possum - the vet was great - but they did not open for two hours when I first found the possum. Don't know what happened to the little guy but think the outcome would not of been good, but at least the vet could do it humanely.

That is so true. I lost my mom through cancer . . . she was such a kind hearted person. Then I lost my dad from an ailment that came about as a result of being initially weakened by cancer . . . He too was a fine man. It's always difficult, but I can only be thankful for having in my life for as long as I did. The pain abates to some extent, but their selves in my memory lives on.
I hope this helps to some extent and cheers Paul. :)

Maybe they are going to rely on Amazon reviews.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) Just been outside chasing off (aagin) the very young magpie who seems to have claimed my yard as his. Thinking someone is feeding him because he is so tame and shows no fear of me. Often I find him in the garden shed eating Tosca the Terrible's cat bikkies. He is unperturbed by Tosca and she by him. Scary; this cat has a bad track record with birds.
