I know! I'm terrible, no time for GR as I'm in Toowoomba for five days of softball. Too much organising to get here!

Leaving for Toowoomba for 5 nights 6 days for the national championships for PSSA softball (which is primary school level). It's hot here but great to get away to watch out daughter play. Left the other three kids at home with grandparents ;)

I love Toowoomba! Are you getting to do any sight-seeing while you're there, Suzanne? Or is it all softball? There are lovely gardens and nice walks around town and an excellent visitor information centre if you need any ideas. And then there's Highfields, which has the Chocolate Cottage, amongst other things...

That will be a nice mother/daughter trip for you Suzanne. Probably not very often she gets you to herself for so long! Enjoy Toowoomba and the softball :)

Vicki Tyley (vickityley) | 1732 comments Faye wrote: "Hi Vicki, I get they are volunteers, but seriously to make 20 phone calls and get nowhere everyone I spoke to said ring so and so, then that person would say of no you will have to ring so and so. The vet took the possum - the vet was great - but they did not open for two hours when I first found the possum. Don't know what happened to the little guy but think the outcome would not of been good, but at least the vet could do it humanely. "

I agree, you shouldn't have to make 20 phone calls. I just wanted to make you (and anyone else) aware that your first port of call for badly injured (versus say an abandoned chick) wildlife should be a vet or an RSPCA clinic with vet facilities. The WIRES volunteers don't have veterinary training. They receive almost no funding (it used to be $13/month) and are usually left out of pocket with feed costs etc. And as you say, if the animal is too badly injured, a vet is the only person who can do it humanely. (I only know this because my man was an RSPCA manager for ten years -- I heard all the stories, except the worst ones, and can almost recite the various animal acts.)

We had an incident with a possum here a few years ago. Early one morning, we found a young possum at the bottom of a tree that had obviously been in a fight. He didn't put up much resistance when we carefully collected him in a towel and put him a box. Fortunately, it happened just as Alan was going to work, so he was able to take him with him. Unfortunately, the possum's injuries were just too serious and it had to be euthanised.

Thanks, I hope you all have a lovely day too. Here it is cool and drizzling, even though the weather radar shows no rain. My mum's wash, hanging on my line, tells a different story! May have to give it another spin and hang it in the garage...

I like watching peoples shoes...lol Then looking at their face to see if their shoes match them or if it doesn't what they should wear....Yes, I'm strange like that but it kinda makes the time go quicker..

BLEGH...Over 20min wait when trying to talk to someone in the goverment dep...YAY!
