Comprehensive How To Use Goodreads + Tips Of The Day

Sorry, Michael - didn't see your post until I just posted! I googled "clearing cookies on iPad" and found a helpful site - isn't the internet wonderful!!
Thanks guys:) Great you have it back Kathryn, and thanks Michael for putting it in the basic thread:)

Thanks, Michael - might be helpful for anyone else silly enough to click the [Hide] link - you'd think they'd make it easier to restore since it's so easy to remove!!

I think it's great - although it probably wouldn't have done my TBR any harm to have been without it for a while…!

Sent you a PM Steve:)
Sent you a PM Steve:)

I have somehow started receiving notifications for every single discussion from every group I'm in. Any suggestions on how I can go back to receiving just notifications from discussions I've commented on and a digest of all others?
Thanks!

I'm conducting a short survey for a university study on social cataloguing for books (aka Goodreads!) and was hoping you'd all help me out by completing it.
I can't offer you anything if you do, except my most heartfelt thanks and deepest appreciations for helping a girl out.
It should only take 5-10 minutes, so if you can click through the link below:

And feel free to share this across social media and with all your book loving friends.
P.S. If its not appropriate to post this here please delete/let me know.

Sorry I found this too late :(

Does anyone use it to catalogue their books, or have you made shelves to have a catalogue of your owned books.
My main issue I am having is that I might own a book - but I don't want it on my 'to read' , 'read' , or 'currently reading' list. It might be a book I have that I personally have no desire to read (eg. a gifted book that I'm not interested in).
Thank you in advance of any advice.

Make a new shelf called "owned" or whatever you want to call it then go to your my books page and click on edit bookshelves. Tick "exclusive" for your new shelf. It will then show at the top and you can place books exclusively on it.

I guess what I'm wanting to do is be able to add all the books I own into a shelf, or mark books that I own in some way, but still be able to have them under other shelves, or none at all, depending on the book.

Oh! I see Jennifer. That sounds a little more complicated.

Jennifer, what about if you made an exclusive shelf for don't want to read and a non-exclusive shelf for owned? That way you can shelve an owned book as read, currently reading, want to read or don't want to read. Would that solve the problem?

Thank you so much. That might work! I'll give it a go.
Jen."
Glad to have helped!

Jennifer, I use a seperate program for that very purpose called CLZ Books, you can google it for more info, but it is a very good and searchable program for cataloguing all of your books.

Or an I imagining it?
The only way around that Sally, as they DON'T have a re-read option, is to read another (mark as) edition. That works; I have done it myself:)

I understand this is an area they are working on for future updates.
I so very rarly re-read books, only my childhood classics. Normally i don't bother tracking them when I re-read, but I am using this for a few challenges so want to track it.

Hover your mouse over the rating and see if it says "remove" or similar...I think you can do that.

I think you can just mark it as 'to be read' once again as opposed 'read', when you put a star on there it auto marks it as 'read'.

Same as with italics or bold Mish: < spoiler> your words < /spoiler>
I added spaces after the < above, so just remove those.
Does that make sense?

Thank you very much Julie. yes it makes sense :)

Hi Deb, the best thing for you to do in this situation is to check the people you chat with in your groups (this one for example) and if there's a particular person you feel you "click" with, check out their reading profile - see how you compare to each other with books and if you are "like minded readers". Then submit a friend request to them. I think that's pretty much how we all started out to get friends :) Good luck..

This evening I have laboured for over an hour to create a long post with lots of formatting and links. I opened a new tab in my browser, to check on a formatting question in the Goodreads Help (but not really very helpful at all) section. Went back to my original post and it's gone, disappeared without a trace. WTF!!!!! Seriously furious that Goodreads does not have an autosave function when you are typing a long post. What a monumental waste of my valuable time this evening, just because I want to participate in the goddam GR forum of my choice. NOT HAPPY! It's like using 1970s programming methods. Ye gods and little fishes...time to go to bed. Goodnight and Good luck with BadReads.

I had the same problem Mary. I spent ages writing many reviews only to have them totally disappear when i clicked on the submit button.
I contacted GR about this & they were aware that there is no 'save draft' option. They told me there is a time out that occurs when you wait too long to submit, so reviews in progress will disappear.
To avoid this, they recommended using a separate word program (or notes) on your device .......where you can save....... and when complete, then copy & paste into GR.
Doesn't solve all the formatting or linkage probs but it's better than losing all of your hard work.
Hopefully one day they will fix this........but the tech support person i spoke to didn't seem overly concerned about this problem......so i won't hold my breath.

I noticed yesterday that when I click on people's reviews the page comes up on the app format and not the online one. If I click on the book in the same posted review it stays in the online version.?? I really hate the app format as it shows one thing at a time! How this has gotten messed up I've no idea.

FOR ANYONE ELSE WHO ACCIDENTALLY, OR DELIBERATELY, CLICKS [HIDE] ON THEIR LITTLE HOME PAGE RECOMMENDATIONS WIDGET, HERE'S WHAT TO DO.
You need to clear your cookies and/or cache for whichever browser you are using. (I was on my iPad --> Settings --> Safari --> Clear Cookies and Data - this will close all tabs you currently have open and seems to mean you need to log back into websites you are currently logged into, but once you log back into Goodreads, your recommendations are back on the home page!)
