Comprehensive How To Use Goodreads + Tips Of The Day

The problem with the particular post I attempted last night was that it related to the year-long challenge, which meant 26 links to title, 26 links to author, 26 links to book cover, plus additional formatting etc. You can't do that in Word or other modes of communication.
When I'm doing something like that Mary, I continually do a "copy" with my mouse so if anything happens most of it is still there and I can just "paste" it back :) Bad luck...
Another thing you can do is hit post, then go back and edit - keep doing that and you won't lose what you've already posted :)
Brenda wrote: "Another thing you can do is hit post, then go back and edit - keep doing that and you won't lose what you've already posted :)"Good points Brenda
I do both of those things, too, Brenda. I also post my year long or large challenges on my safe mode as I go along, Mary, then when you're ready to put it on GR you can just copy and paste when It's complete it. (Like I did for my yearly series challenge that I just posted. ت saves a whole lot of time I can tell you that!
Have you had GR send you to the app link when clicking on people's reviews rather than the online page? It stays on the web link when clicking on the book in the same post. It's doing it on everyone's posts. I'm frustrated with it! it's never done it before and I haven't changed anything I usually do. I hate the app format!

I don't like the app either. I deleted it & now just use the on-line link.
I've no idea why it suddenly wasn't working like before, perhaps when the app was updated?? . I didn't realize that I could uninstall the app but I was thinking that I needed it for GR to work?? Whatever. Silly me!
Now it's back to working only online now!! Yea!!
Thanks Anne! ت

I could never get used to the app after using the on-line for years. So glad everything is hunky dory for you now :D

I do everything here on GR on my phone and have never used it. Do you think many people use it?
Li'l Owl wrote: "Icewineanne wrote: "Li'l Owl wrote: "I've no idea why it suddenly wasn't working like before, perhaps when the app was updated?? . But for me it needs a major overhaul before i'll use it again LOL
I have just tried, three times, to add a 2019 challenge. each time GR deletes my post and tells me I need to very my email. BUT I AM LOGGED IN ALREADY! AND IT GIVES ME NO SPOT TO DO SO!really?
Help??
Are you talking about Goodreads own challenge that's on every year Deborah? If so, we can't do it until the 1st January.
Can someone tell me how you reply to comments on your reviews?? I’ve seen things that say there’s a reply button but i don’t have that? Thanks so much!
Underneath your review there's a comment box, just like these in the threads. You would use the comment box, and hit the "reply" on the right hand side, if you want to reply to a particular comment :)
Not sure where to post this, but did Goodreads remove the 'Most Read Authors' stat page? I can't find the link on my shelf page?
Mell wrote: "Not sure where to post this, but did Goodreads remove the 'Most Read Authors' stat page? I can't find the link on my shelf page?"Yes they did. Here is the thread in the Feedback Group where they announced it. A lot of people complaining about it so maybe they might bring it back

Zoey wrote: "Yes they did. Here is the thread in the Feedback Group where they announced it. It wasn't something I checked every day, but sometimes!
Question for the GR Brains Trust - I want to add some badges to my profile, but for a few months now when I try to do this I get the message below. Is it just me? Have I done something wrong and been blacklisted??I used to have badges on there, but went to update them and got the error and haven't been able to do anything since. ☹
"Error

I wonder how they define "temporarily". It's been like that for months
Yes you're right - it's been unable to be used for months :( Kylie, might I suggest you email support@goodreads.com and ask the question of them, then perhaps come back here and let us know their reply? Without the feedback group there's no way to find out details except to email them..
Brenda wrote: "Yes you're right - it's been unable to be used for months :( Kylie, might I suggest you email support@goodreads.com and ask the question of them, then perhaps come back here and let us know their r..."Thanks for the reassurance that it is not just me. I have emailed support as you suggest and will let you know what their response is.
Here is the response from Support regarding the badges. It makes sense now that I know why they are doing this. Thanks for writing in. Unfortunately, we've been dealing with increased spam activity on the site recently, so we disabled certain targeted fields, like the URL field, on the profile page as part of our efforts to deter the spammers and protect our members.
Our first priority is maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for our members, and I really apologize for the inconvenience. This is why you've been experiencing trouble adding badges to your profile page, though we hope to have this feature restored soon.
We appreciate your patience in the meantime. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to let me know! For answers to commonly asked questions, I can also recommend visiting Goodreads Help.
Have a lovely rest of your week.
A prompt response again Kylie. And yes, very understandable. I don't know that a big concern like GR will ever get rid of spam! Thanks for letting us know :)
Question about the genres that appear on the right side of a book's page:do these happen when members add the book to one of their shelves?
If I wanted to mark a book as paranormal, would I have to have a paranormal shelf to which to add it?
Yes they are. And yes you need to create your own shelf to add a book to a particular genre. I have many shelves - Aussie authors is a main, then the varying genres, plus the year of publication. If you want, check my shelves out :)
Brenda wrote: "Yes they are. And yes you need to create your own shelf to add a book to a particular genre. I have many shelves - Aussie authors is a main, then the varying genres, plus the year of publication. I..."Thanks, Brenda, don't think I'll bother with it, but good info.
A quick question here. For some reason, every time I try to add a picture, Goodreads tells me it doesn't go to external sites anymore. Is there any magic way of adding pictures that's new? I used to upload them to imgur, and then put in the link in the 'some html is OK' style.
They've had that 'rule' for awhile now. When you want to add a picture, right click on it, then click on "copy image address", then go to your designated post and do
< img src="PASTE IMAGE ADDRESS" >
leaving out the two spaces each end (between < and > )
Good luck!

This may have been covered off elsewhere, but I just discovered how to search a book by the country in which it is set! :0oFor those who don't know (I think you need to do this on a desktop rather than the app - but don't hold me to it!) - you go to the Browse tab and select 'all genres' under 'favourite genres' then in the 'search' bar type the country, state or city/place you are after and voila!!!
https://www.goodreads.com/genres
I may be preaching to the converted but this is a game changer for me who manually tries to research the country in a slow and cumbersome way!
This will also help me enormously with a 'Beanstack' challenge I am doing through my local library called 'Everyone Belongs' where you have to read your way around the world but cannot duplicate countries.
Brenda wrote: "And it worked! Thanks again Kylie :)"Yes, I found it on an obscure help thread and couldn't believe my eyes. I am even more amazed that I have discovered something that you didn't know about Brenda- but glad that it helps you too.
Oh and I have been experimenting, you can also type in things like 'red cover' or 'weapon on cover' - I just need to now figure out how to filter that down somehow.

Haha! I certainly don't know everything and it's great to learn something new - thanks!

Brilliant! You've saved me (and others) a massive amount of time. Drinks on me if/when we catch up.
Hi all. On my laptop, if I click on any review of post in the newsfeed it will not automatically revert back to the previous page, meaning it goes back to top of news feed and I have to scroll down to get where I was. I've tried the arrow left etc. but nothing seems to work. This doens't happen on the mobile (cell phone), but I do prefer the laptop as it gives more information.
Any tips out there, good friends?
CB

I hope that makes sense.

Indeed Icewineanne, I have often written my reviews in Word, then cut and pasted into the GR comment box. Then go through the document and add the formatting, change plain text titles to links etc. Only way to go.
