Aloha | 71 comments I finished Ghost Story. I need to make my way to the discussion for that. I have so many discussion to go to this month. I also finished a thin little book, The Whalestoe Letters, that goes with House of Leaves, my favorite novel of all time. I'm finishing up Frankenstein for my SciFi Aficionados group read before I finish up The Recognitions for my Brain Pain group read.

Tracy (notrace) | 105 comments I am reading The Night Circus The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern . If I had to rate it right now I would give it a 2 or 3, I'm hoping it picks up. I've had a good run of excellent books so I was probably due for a challenge.

Aloha | 71 comments Hi, Dustin! *waves* Good to see you here instead of witnessing me stalking and torturing poor Maciek in his reviews. If you're looking for something substantially different from what was in House of Leaves, you'll be disappointed. It's a great addendum if you're a huge fan of HoL, as I am. It forced me to focus on the letters, which confirmed (to me) my suspicion as to what the book was really about. A few additional letters added more cred to my theory.

I think GR was experiencing some technical issues when you were posting. I had issues posting a reading update at the same time.

I replied to you in the TWTTK thread, but I'll post it here for you too.

You would be fine understanding the plot without having read the rest of the series, but it does contain spoilers for the earlier books. If you plan on reading the entire series, you may want to hold off until you've read books 1-4.

message 2623: by Gwen (new)

Gwen In King's intro, he states that this is a standalone. I think it would give a reader more pleasure to have the context of the rest of the DT when reading, but it could be read in a vacuum.

Hi again, Aloha!

It's good to see you again....and NOT torturing Maciek.:) Anyway, thank you very much for your input, it is much appreciated. I actually have yet to read House of Leaves, but a good friend and I definitely plan on reading it together relatively soon. Right, Kathryn?
The entire premise of HoL intrigues me very much..

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 612 comments Not currently reading anything, mostly trying to catch up on getting my reviews typed up for the books I've read in the last couple months and posts I've missed. I am going today to (hopefully) B.A.M. to get The Wind Through the Keyhole (The Dark Tower, #4.5) by Stephen King and The Master of Heathcrest Hall. If I can't make it to B.A.M then I'll at least definitely be going to Walmart and getting WTtK. Woo, the excitement is too much I almost couldn't fall asleep last night. :)

That is exactly right! Aloha read the companion book The Whalestoe Letters, so once we get around to reading HOL, we will have to definitely read TWL right after because I have never read it actually. :) So excited about introducing you to the five and a half minute hallway......and that is all I will say. ;)

I don't think so because the book is basically back story of Roland life in the past.

Aloha | 71 comments Speaking of House of Leaves, I'm nibbling on Only Revolutions. This is harder for me because it's basically poetry, which I only have a passing knowledge of. I'm going to have to find undisturbed time to sit down and read this book. It's basically about star-crossed lovers, with the girl one one side, and the boy at the other side of the book when you flip it upside down and over. The other lover's passage is written in the sidebars and upside down of the opposite lover. This is a beautiful and unique book that also would be fun to figure out. It'd be good if you appreciate poetry, too.

I finished The Recognitions. If you enjoy about a thousand pages of satire, that is for you. It's not my cup of tea, though. It was hard for me not to tune out, as well-written, observant and witty the author was.

I'm currently reading The Devil All the Time, which is a well-written hillbilly on a killing spree book.

Holly | 434 comments I just started Relentless by Dean Koontz. Very good so far. :)

message 2650: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 71 comments I finished The Devil All the Time, an enjoyable disturbing horror in the hillbilly gone serial killer vein.

I figured out how to read Only Revolutions, which is like a poetry book. On one side, I read 8 pages of the girl's, flip it upside down to read 8 pages of the guy's to go back to the beginning. Then I read the sidebar's list of historical happenings for that date. I flip the book over and do the same for the guy's story. It's a gas. What a gorgeous and unique book.

I'm also reading The Sound and the Fury. Love, love Faulkner. I'd forgotten how with only a few words of banter among the characters, he can create vivid imagery and detail. I can see how influential he is to modern literature. I need to read more of him.
