Brooklyn Darkchild (brooklyndarkchild) | 7 comments Tell us a little bit about yourself, the name of your book(s) and who you published through.

I'm Brooklyn Darkchild, originally from Brooklyn but now proud to call Cincinnati my home. I've got nine children and fifteen grandkids. My publishing house is called Brooklyn Dreams and I self published my debut novel This Ain't No Hearts and Flowers Love Story through Lulu. The first four chapters of my book are posted on my Goodreads author's page.

Welcome, Brooklyn!

Have you uploaded your book onto Good Reads? Do you have a link for it?

Now, about me. LOL

I founded this group because not only am I the owner of two publishing houses, but I truly believe that some of the best reading you are going to find today is available only through independent presses?

Now, I realize that's a bold statement, but I say this because I know indie presses take chances on books that conglomerate publishers won't touch. Many of these books are fabulous, but edgy. Being small, we can take advantage of this. :)

My two houses are: Wild Child Publishing.com, a mainstream fiction/non-fiction publisher, and Freya's Bower.com, a romance and erotica publisher.

I am interested in reading more indie press books.

Please share your story, your favorites, and your observations.

Marci

Shaun (shaunjeffrey) I'm Shaun Jeffrey, a struggling UK horror author - having grown up in a house in a cemetery, I guess I wouldn't write anything else really:)

D.N. (writerwizard) | 1 comments Thanks for inviting me, Marci!

I'm D.N. Lyons, first-time author-to-be of What Flavor Are You?, a short story about the hazards of ice pops and boyfriends. It used to be Popsicles, but my editor kindly pointed out that Popsicle probably wouldn't like it if I used their name in a gay sex story. Shame, shame. It really tied the story together.

Sharon (scpennington) | 13 comments
Hello, I'm Sharon Pennington, native Texan. My debut novel, Hoodoo Money, was released in May by Draumr Publishing, a small independent publishing house in Columbia, Maryland. And they're interested in a sequel.

I tried the agent route first with no luck. Draumr did a wonderful job with my novel - it's beautiful - and they are very author friendly.

However, a good portion of the marketing falls to me. Does anyone have advice to offer? I've done postcards, press releases, flyers are presently being printed for local mom-and-pop/swap-n-shop bookstores. I purposely used a number of locales in the novel, and I'm contacting proprietors, sending some of them a complimentary copy of Hoodoo Money.

I've created a website (that was interesting)http://www.sharonpenningtonwrites.web...

Other ideas? Thanks!

Sharon

message 9: by Marva (new)

Marva Hello to everyone!

I self-published a book of stories based on lies...I mean stories...by father told me about growing up on a farm in West Texas (hi, Sharon!) during the Depression. I put "Tales of a Texas Boy" on the group bookshelf.

I have a scifi titled "First Duty" just released by Sam's Dot Publishing. SDP is also publishing my Aladdinesque fantasy titled "The Seven Adventures of Cadida."

I'm working on the second book in a series titled "Bad Spelling". Another kids' fantasy. I'm querying the first book and hope somebody likes it enough. Tried agents first. To heck with 'em. I love small Indy publishers.

I write for middle-grade since I don't know how adults act.

I'm an Oregonian, born and raised. Wasted 35 years as a tech writer (hi, John!). I took up fiction instead a couple of years ago.

Marci's Wild Child published a couple of anthologies in which I have stories: Weirdly 1 and 2.

My website is at http://marvadasef.com/

Brooklyn Darkchild (brooklyndarkchild) | 7 comments I agree with Wildchild...independent presses do take more chances. The state of publishing today, like the music industry, has become too focused on formula novels designed to sell huge amounts. Good storytelling has gone out the window, and authors who don't play by the rules are out of luck. When I first joined Goodreads i was delighted to find my book was already listed here. I also uploaded it to the group. My website is http://www.freewebs.com/brooklyndarkc... You can buy the book at http://www.lulu.com/content/1099166
And Sharon???
Marketing has been my Number One Challenge. I think you should start a thread just on that.

Libby Cone | 2 comments I'm Libby Cone. I wrote my MA thesis as a novel on the German occupation of the Channel Islands during WWII and published it in slightly different form (i.e., I axed about half of it, following a friend's advice) with BookSurge as War on the Margins: A Novel. I have a Web site (www.waronthemargins.com) and an Amazon blog. I think I've been bitten by the historical fiction bug, because I am now working on a book about an obscure Dutch colony in what is now Delaware (I drove from Philly to Lewes DE and back yesterday to go to a tiny museum). If this next project ever gets done, I might explore a small indie publisher, as I'm frustrated by not being listed on Ingram.

Celia (sgtmom) | 4 comments Celia Hayes - originally from California, wound up in Texas after twenty years in the military, began writing for a mil-blog, then doing book reviews for a couple of other blogs... I did a family memoir, "Our Grandpa Was an Alien", because so many of the blog-fans liked my nostalgia pieces, then a novel based on the unknown story of the Stephens-Townsend Party, "To Truckee's Trail". This December I have a long historical saga coming out "The Adelsverein Trilogy" - all about the German settlements in the Texas Hill Country. (What - you never heard of about how there were so many Germans on the frontier that you could hardly find anyone in Gillespie County who spoke English? It's another unknown story of thefrontier...) I also had a go at doing my historical novels the traditional way, with an agent and a mainstream publisher, before realising that what Marci said at the beginning of this thread was true; the best and most original stuff is NOT being found at traditional publishers. Peggy (peggyullmanbell) | 11 comments Hi, Peggy Ullman Bell here. I have 2 hystorical novels on the market, one from iUniverse the other from CreateSpace [links below signature]

Visitors are welcome at my website http://peggyullmanbell.com and my blog http://peggyullmanbell.com/sappho_sin... where I am currently featuring an interview with Owen Fiddler, subject and star of Marvin Wilson's latest biographical novel.

I believe herstory to be an awkward word so I use hyststory = hyst (from the Greek for uterus) + story. Vocally, it is globally understood and visually, for me, it works as does Re-versing when used to mean Versing again the altered aspects of our hystory.

Now that y'all are totally confused I say --
Blessed Be,

Debbie (debbie_mumford) | 2 comments Maggie -

About getting your books to show up...
On your "My Books" page, look for the "You have ?? books - Add more" text at the top of the column on the right-hand side. From the new page, look to the right and choose "manually add books" under "other options"

I had to add my books and then go back and edit them to add the picture. Haven't figured out how to do it all in one step. Sigh.

Good luck!

Made DNA (madeindna) | 3 comments Hello, my non de plume is Made in DNA.

I write serial pulp microfiction with cyberpunk, sci-fi, bizarro and adult themes, and short stories (cyberpunk, sci-fi). Most of my short story fiction is here.

I have one ebook self published which you can access here.

By 'microfiction' I don't mean 'flash fiction', but it could certainly be categorized such. I mean fiction that is no more than 140 characters PER line. That's approximately 25 words per sentence. My first and second microfiction works are serialized at Twitter.com. You can sample my first piece here at GoodReads under my profile.

Thanks much.

Amanda (goodreadscomamanda_hamm) Hi all.

I've been lurking on this group for some time, but I don't think I've ever introduced myself. My name is Amanda Hamm. I am the author of two very different books. The first is a very light love story called Dear Jane Letters. You can read reviews on Amazon (and one or two here) for more information.

My second book is a sci-fi novella set in Antarctica. The title is Zero Station. I have the first chapter of this one on my author page.

Both books are in print and are also on Kindle and Mobipocket.

This is why I haven't introduced myself before. It always reads so much like an ad. Obviously, it would be great if anyone was interested in my books enough to buy one, but I just wanted to share my background. I am also a SAHM to two little ones and work on an occasional freelance article.

Chester | 3 comments Just found this group and thought I'd give it a shot. I see a few folks I know here. I've been published by two independent publishers. My first three Greg McKenzie mysteries are from Durban House, and the fourth is from Night Shadows Press. I also have the first of a new series from Night Shadows coming out in April.

The McKenzie series features a retired Air Force OSI agent and his wife who, in the last two books, have become private investigators in Nashville. You can check out reviews and opening chapters of all the books at my website: http://www.chesterdcampbell.com. I also have a Holiday Gift sale with 40% off.

Al | 20 comments Hello Chester, Elizabeth, and all!
I'd like to second Celia's recommendation to check out the Independent Authors Guild. Not only do the members have many wonderful books to their credit, the data files maintained at the site have tons of practical and helpful advice for indie authors.
My own series of three novels, Distant Cousin, has proven quite popular yet it doesn't fit the niches of traditional publishing. I'm so glad to have gone independent!

Robin (robinsullivan) | 9 comments Hello,
New to this group - I'm the editor of my husband's (Michael J. Sullivan) books. He has a six-book fantasy series: The Riyria Revelations. The books are all written but only 2 are "out there" at the moment: The Crown Conspiracy | Avempartha
The Crown Conspiracy by Michael J. Sullivan Avempartha by Michael J. Sullivan

He is published by Aspirations Media Inc. An independent press in Minnesota.

Genre: Fantasy
Published: Aspirations Media Inc (October 2008)

ABOUT THE BOOK

Sentenced to death, they have only one way out…and so begins this epic tale of treachery and adventure, sword fighting and magic, myth and legend. "The Crown Conspiracy is right up my alley, traditional fantasy, "good" bad guys, a large dose of humor, lots of character development and plenty of surprises."Fantasy Debut

"Michael J. Sullivan has written a book I will read over and over again and it most definitely will always reside on my favorite’s shelf."ReaderViews

"There is so many layers to this story that to explain it in a few words is nigh impossible."Front Street Reviews

"The Crown Conspiracy is great fun and a romp end to end...Highly recommended and another positive surprise for 2008.Fantasy Book Critic

"A fast paced and riveting fantasy, "The Crown Conspiracy" is well worth reading." Midwest Book Review

"From the first chapter to the last, the plot twisted and turned in unexpected directions. It takes a great writer to weave a tale that surprises me, that keeps me in suspense, that keeps me reading late into the night and Michael J. Sullivan is a great writer."Dee Marie, author: The Sons of Avalon

"The Crown Conspiracy was a page turning delight. Each character was intricately constructed so that an air of realism surrounded them. The twists and turns of the novel freed it from predictability and that in itself is refreshing these days. Sullivan is a master story teller"Violette L. Reid, author: The First Chronicle of Zayashariya: Out of Night

"It's hard to believe that the Crown Conspiracy is Michael J. Sullivan's first novel. He writes with the confidence, the skill, and the sophistication of a seasoned veteran. He has created a story that works on many levels: an epic adventure, a medieval mystery, a fantasy, and a coming -of-age tale."Susan McLeod, author: Soul and Shadow

ABOUT THE SERIES
Instead of a string of sequels, The Riyria Revelations is a six-book fantasy series conceived as a single epic tale divided into individual episodes. All were written before the first was released so that plot elements are intertwined, yet each is self-contained and can be read independently from each other. With this series you will not be held hostage to read the next one--you will simply want to. Coming in April 2009, the second book entitled Avempartha is available for pre-order now from Amazon.com.
