Cheryl Landmark (clandmark) | 861 comments I'm another one of those Harry Dresden fans. At least, so far. I've only read the first three books, but have thoroughly enjoyed them. Just finished Grave Peril. Now, I'm starting to read another of the House of Night series, Chosen.

message 3504: by Scott (new)

Scott | 165 comments I finished Dead Man's Song this morning. I really love this story so far.

I think I'm going to start The Long Walk this afternoon.

message 3505: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (rocktopusjones) | 338 comments Reading Nightlife right now. Also close to finishing up Academ's Fury, and still listening to The Broken Kingdoms. I am enjoying Nightlife so far!

message 3509: by Temi (new)

Temi (temisol) | 39 comments I am about a 1/4 into Deadhouse Gates but can only read that on the weekends when I have blocks of time available. For my evening reads I want to start either 1Q84 Book 1 and Book 2 or Prince of Thorns. Has anyone got anything good/bad to say about either??

Come on, catch up, Dustin! :)
Just kidding...where are you at now?

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Nightlife is one of all time favorites, Chelsea.

I am listening to The Graveyard Book, and I'm loving it. I have to say that I am becoming a huge fan of Neil Gaiman. He's a very good fantasist. I love that he narrated this and Odd and the Frost Giants. He has a great voice.

message 3512: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Michael | 572 comments Finished Mockingjay Overall, very readable series, though darker than I expected.

Just started Sasha: A Trial of Blood and Steel by Joel Shepherd

message 3513: by Dana (new)

Dana | 140 comments I just finished a really bad romance novel, a really good children's novel (Liesl & Po), and now I'm finally getting into Sailing to Sarantium. It's been sitting on my bookshelf for about 6 months now. Hoping that I enjoy it as much as Tigana.

I'm looking forward to reading that! I have promised myself to work through the stack of 20 something unread books next to my bed before getting any new ones though (not counting a few pre-orders that should release any time now :p ).

I was really impressed by Joel's Cassandra Kresnov series. The characterization and world building are really top notch.

Kara (sterlink) | 143 comments Valerie wrote: "Started The Lies of Locke Lamora and Wintersmith (Tiffany Aching, #3), and am enjoying both. :)"

Always liked the Tiffany Aching series. It seems to be very under-read, esp. by YA - which is weird. Haven't read the latest yet, but am curious too. Enjoy!

Temi wrote: "I am about a 1/4 into Deadhouse Gates but can only read that on the weekends when I have blocks of time available. For my evening reads I want to start either [book:1Q84 Book 1 and Boo..."

Temi,

Fantasy Book Club just did Prince of Thorns as a group read in Oct., so there's a plethora of reviews and initial impressions from their discussion, October -The Prince of Thorns

I'm still trying to finish it, but I haven't found anything yet (200 pages in) to make believe it's more than a three star book.

message 3521: by Kara (new)

Kara (sterlink) | 143 comments Oh, so I'm (obviously) finishing up Prince of Thorns, but yesterday found myself starting Of Blood and Honey, during my lunch break and I can say that 2 chapters and 20 minutes of reading already has me wanting to keep on reading. Greatly looking forward to the Beyond Reality group read of this one in December.

In other news, been finishing up my listen of the Fionivar Tapestry (and my first G.G. Kay novel) with The Darkest Road: Fionavar Tapestry Series, Book 3. It's Guy Gavriel Kay & Simon Vance magic to my ears.

=)

message 3522: by Temi (new)

Temi (temisol) | 39 comments Thanks Kara, I've trolled through and decided to shelve Prince of Thorns and go ahead with my Haruki Murakami read. I had a bad case of insomnia last night so sped through Shadow Hills during the still of the night. It was an ok read. The author Anastasia Hopcus is the daughter of the lovely Candace Camp who right some good historical romances. Shadowhills had a nice enough tech/magic blend but was more YA Romance than YA Paranormal in my opinion but not bad for a 3hr while-away.

message 3523: by Tom (new)

Tom Kepler | 55 comments I'm reading The Dragon Keeper's Handbook, by Shawn MacKenzie. The Dragon Keeper's Handbook: Including the Myth & Mystery, Care & Feeding, Life & Lore of these Fiercely Splendid Creatures

It is organized as a compendium and field guide to studying dragons. It includes true dragons, false dragons, cosmic dragons, the evolution of dragons, a year in a dragon's life, and dragon survival, among other information. My favorite word so far? Cryptoherpitologist.

I'm especially finding it interesting because I wrote a fantasy novel, The Stone Dragon, that has two dragons in it, so I'm researching my own book--an interesting pursuit!

message 3524: by Mark (new)

Mark Meyers (markmeyers) | 35 comments Neuromancer by William Gibson. I've been meaning to read this book for years.

message 3525: by Trace (new)

Trace Riles (traceriles) I just picked up Storm Front by Jim Butcher. I've only just started but so far...pretty good!

I haven't read the other Tiffany Aching books, but I'm going to get my hands on them soon because I LOVED this. :') The Witches are always great.

Finally started Santa Olivia. Not sure how much I'm liking it so far.

He cracks me up too.

The beginning of Cyberpunk.
If you like it, you should read Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. It's as good as Neuromancer.

message 3533: by Viv (new)

Viv JM Just read Feed and Deadline. Never would have even considered reading these if it hadn't been for reviews from friends on Goodreads. And love, love, loved them both!

Now it's time to get back to some fantasy though...Cursor's Furyfor me now, and trying to get a bit more into City of Boneswhich has been a bit of a slow burner for me, but seems to be hotting up a bit now, 170 pages in!

I love Bob. I didn't like that they made him a person in the show though.

message 3535: by Haydensdad (new)

Haydensdad | 73 comments Just picked up used copies of Furies of Calderon(doesn't look it has been cracked) by Jim Butcher, Elantris(a lttle worn) by Brandon Sanderson, and Ravenheart by Davide Gemmell(also never cracked).Has any one read any in the Gemmell series I know I bought book three but the description made sound as though it could be read as stand alone. I normally don't read a series out of sequence.

message 3536: by Jenny (new)

Each book is different and COULD be read stand alone. But read in order, there seems to be about a 2 year gap between each story, so she's younger in the first two.

Easy reads though, and Tiffany is a great strong female character. The books always made me laugh out loud at some point. They were actually my introduction to Terry Pratchett, and I'd recommend them to plenty of people age-wise, (I read them only a few years back), but esp. young females.

message 3540: by Traci (new)

Traci I think the Tiffany Aching books are Pratchett's best work. They might not be the funniest and they might be rather easy to read. But there's more emotion in them. Especially the first one, with a young girl dealing with the loss of a beloved family member and mentor, touched me. My favorite books from a favorite author.

message 3541: by Scott (new)

Scott | 165 comments I just finished The Long Walk.

Now I think I might try to finish out the Harry Potter series. I just started Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

message 3542: by Sandra (new)

Sandra (sleo) I just started The Lord of the Rings. I know, I know. Never read it before. Saw the first two movies. So far it's quite charming.

Also finished Wasteland of Flint which was great and am 3/4 through House of Reeds. Both are very good.

message 3543: by Temi (new)

Temi (temisol) | 39 comments I seem to have read a stunning number of books in the last few days. A stonker of a cold, combined with a 5day public holiday weekend here in Lagos, left me a prime target of snuggle-in-bed reading. My brother had given me David Weber's Honorverse sometime this summer so I blazed through On Basilisk Station,The Honor of the Queen, The Short Victorious War, Field of Dishonor and am now halfway through Flag in Exile. I was *supposed* to be reading the new Murakami but it's a hardcover and I wanted some nice paperbacks to snuggle up with (lazy I know!). I also snuck in A Beautiful Friendship which I had been given an e-copy of to pre-read for my 11yr old cousin (his mum makes me vet all his sci-fi/fantasy novels). I must say I had ZERO interest in Dave Weber's books. Seen them around for years and not had the slightest inclination to read them. Honor seemed (still seems to be frank) a little too perfect and twee for me but I actually really enjoyed the books! They moved fast and had some techie stuff but not too much and the science seemed ok on an off-hand basis. Will read the rest of the Honorverse for the rest of the week

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I started Incarceron on audio yesterday and Retribution Falls.

Traci Still on my Malazan read, next up is The Bonehunters. Five down, five to go.

message 3547: by Valerie (last edited Nov 09, 2011 10:13AM) (new)

Valerie (versusthesiren) | 357 comments Got 195 pages into Santa Olivia before giving up and skimming the rest. I so wanted to like it, but it didn't really work for me. :(

About a quarter through The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters and 60% through Oryx and Crake.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Retribution Falls is off to a good start, Chelsea. It's reminding me of the kinds of movies I love.

Valerie, I have The Glass Books in my pile. It looks interesting.

message 3549: by Chelsea (new)

Chelsea (rocktopusjones) | 338 comments I just finished The Broken Kingdoms last night. This book is stunning. I listen to my audiobooks in the car, and I would have started crying at the end, except that I commute with a carpool and that would be embarrassing.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I was crying this morning in my car as I drove to work. I'm listening to The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and a really sad part happened. Not easy to drive when you're weeping.
