Aloha | 940 comments LOL, Tracy! I feel your book addiction pain!!!! I have the exact same problem. I then tell myself that Aloha Jr. doesn't have to eat. Children in the U.S. are having weight problems.

message 3252: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Hey, exactly what I was thinking!! I have 2 children and they could diet for a while. Besides I'm tired of cooking. I could kill 2 birds with one stone, you know. If I didn't buy food I could save money and if I didn't cook the food I didn't buy I would have more time to read!! Genius!

I like Epic fantasy but i have not read any Urban fantasy yet, well i tried Neverwhere but since i have not yet finished, it does not count.

message 3256: by Susinok (new)

Susinok I am almost halfway through listening to The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie. I love the narration and the story. I have the entire trilogy on audio so this will take me a while.

Then I have Brent Week's The Way of Shadows to listen to after that is finished.

I haven't read much epic fantasy in a long time, but this book is very enjoyable. Mostly I have been reading urban fantasy and paranormal romance lately.

Cheryl Landmark (clandmark) | 861 comments It took me only a day to read Fool Moon. Awesome, as usual! Now, I've started reading The Magician's Apprentice by Trudi Caravan, who is a new author for me.

You should read her first trilogy, starting with the Magican's Guild, which was a great book for me.

Cheryl Landmark (clandmark) | 861 comments Kevin wrote: "You should read her first trilogy, starting with the Magican's Guild, which was a great book for me."

Actually, I was planning on reading the trilogy, and I picked up this book by mistake, thinking it was the first book in the series. I didn't have my wish-list with me when I went into the bookstore. :(

I assume it's stand-alone enough that I can read it without reading the trilogy first, even though it's set in the same world?

message 3260: by Traci (new)

Traci It's set in the past of her other books so I assume you should be fine. But I haven't read them.

carol. | 2616 comments Finished Nights of Villjamur--uh huh, I did it. Now starting The Wise Man's Fear. Which puts me at an ethical dilemma. I borrowed it from the library and it's overdue as of today, and someone else wants it...

Trudi Canavan is a really cool author. I hope you like The Magician's Apprentice. But it even gets better with The Magicians' Guild and then the best is Priestess of the White! (only in my opinion of course!)

Do they need to be in order because I got The Magician's Guild and it is the second book?

message 3273: by Roshio (new)

Roshio | 106 comments No I don't think so. Magician's Apprentice is a prequel with totally different characters so no spoilers either way. I started with Magician's Guild and I much preferred it that way. Magician's Apprentice just kinda explains the world/magic system.

message 3274: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) I'm reading Starlight and Shadows trilogy, while waiting next week for the new Drizzt book coming out.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Occultation and Other Stories, which is a mix of weird fiction and horror, sort of fantastic, as well.

Listening to A World Without Heroes.

I agree about Chosen. But I loved the scene when Joselin and Phedre get back together again. *so sweet!*

Word of caution about Avatar. It's pretty dark in a large section. I actually avoid this part during re-reads.

Temi (temisol) | 39 comments Oh I have read the scene of Joselin & Phaedra's reunion about 27 times. No kidding. I heart them so much.

I was wondering if there anyone else out here who can't stand Trudi Canavan?? I'm beginning to think I am a freak and just didn't give her enough of a chance cos loads of people with similar tastes to mine LOVE her but somehow all her books leave me cold! I have the Age of Five series sitting there on my shelf and couldn't get past Priestess of the White. I just find her style quite blah to be honest. Should I just push on through ?

message 3283: by Traci (new)

It's very different. The author has a blog post up about how she incorporated more post-colonial themes in the book. If you're interested, I highly recommend reading it! It might give you more insight.

Good - in a slightly unnerving and bewildering way lol! The gods/godlings make me think of Lord of Lightwith their foibles and weaknesses and larger than life characters.

Thanks for the heads up Chelsea, will check out the author's blog .

Good to know! I knew the Crystal Shard was written, and then re-written to be more Drizzt centered, but I was expecting it to be more mature, I guess.

Still going through Hidden Warrior and Nights of Villjamur... slowly. Firestorm's up next. Think I'm gonna need that light read.

It weighs about a thousand pounds. I briefly considered taking it on an airplane, but had to switch to something *literally* lighter!

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) There is that, Chelsea. Hardcover books are extremely unwieldly. I prefer paperback across the board, preferably mass market. For the uncumbersome reason and for the lower price.

Me too. I like how the mass market editions are all basically the same size, and line up in a most aesthetically pleasing way.

Might be a little OCD regarding book organization. :D

I think I just find Canavan dull... and the writing is so simplistic.

message 3300: by Susinok (new)

Susinok Still listening to The Blade Itself. I'm finally on the final third.

I am surprised at how much I really like the character Glokta. He's such a disgusting and repulive creature with a repulsive job, but he is fascinating and likeable. All of his mutterings are just funny.
