message 3051: by Traci (new)

Traci @Dawn I was a mess while reading Fool's Fate of the The Tawny Man series. I'm not usually a crier but...well it was ugly.

message 3052: by Maggie (new)

Maggie K | 730 comments Farseer did not make me cry either

I am reading On Basilisk Station for sci-fi and A Shadow in Summer for fantasy.

Shannon (_shannon) | 289 comments Colleen of the Crawling Chaos wrote: "Shannon wrote: "Just finished The Native Star and started The Greyfriar."

How did you like 'Native Star'?

***
I thought The Native Star was good overall. I wouldn't say that I loved it but it held my interest throughout and it was definitely an easy read.

message 3054: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments It's difficult to make me cry these days. The one that came closest was the end of Horns by Joe Hill. A truly powerful and strange book!

message 3055: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon (last edited Aug 24, 2011 03:36PM) (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) Come to think of it, I did almost want to cry when reading Royal Assassin, but for totally the wrong reasons. ;)

@Shannon - Thanks for the reply. Good to know.

message 3056: by Eileen (new)

Eileen Horns made me cry, Jason.

message 3057: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments Horns had a very sad ending! There was also a great emotional release that I don't think I've ever experienced in a novel before. It effected me deeply.

message 3058: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) I am right now just started reading Embasssytown, then Un Lun Dun, both by China Mieville, then on to Green Mars and Blue Mars.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I will cry unpredictably about things on tv or in books or movies. I don't cry about my own life stuff, except for when I lost my dad and my cat. I cried for days when my dad passed, and I got some really weird looks because I am not a very emotionally demonstrative person in general.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Regarding, The Left Hand of God. Definitely wait until you're in the mood for something dark, Colleen.

message 3061: by Scott (new)

Scott | 165 comments I finished Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban last night and I started The Summer I Died this morning.

message 3062: by Kit★ (new)

Kit★ (xkittyxlzt) | 1018 comments I agree with you guys on Horns. I went in expecting a sort of scary story, and it was something different, and I thought it was rather wonderful, and I did get emotional more than once reading it. I really liked the end though, it was a good one.

message 3063: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (_shannon) | 289 comments All this discussion about Horns has piqued my interest...another for the TBR pile.

message 3064: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) I want to read Horns, but I own Heart-Shaped Box, so that's up first.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I'm reading Skinwalker and I'm enjoying it. I love the nice infusion of Cherokee folklore and culture. And Jane is quite a heroine!

message 3066: by carol. , Senor Crabbypants (new)

carol. | 2616 comments @Lady D--I really like the series and the respect given to the Cherokee. Still there's something I can't quite put my finger on; I just don't get the emotional response that I do with Kate Daniels.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Oh, I don't love it as much as Kate Daniels, to be sure, but I think I will end up a fan of the series.

message 3068: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments I think you might like Horns, Dawn. HSB is a different beast, though. It's still great, but different than Horns. So keep that in mind! :)

message 3069: by Traci (new)

Traci Horns again... I keep wanting to read it and my interest just got even more demanding.

message 3070: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (_shannon) | 289 comments Just started The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner.

I don't think I'm going to finish The Greyfriar. My tolerance is quite low these days... I remember a time when I finished a book no matter how much I was disliking it but I really seem to be finding it harder to do that lately.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I really liked The Thief, Shannon. I bought the rest in the series.

message 3072: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (_shannon) | 289 comments Lady Danielle "The Book Huntress" wrote: "I really liked The Thief, Shannon. I bought the rest in the series."

I'm only 10 pages in but I like the narritive so much already that I'm planning to grab the rest of the series today.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I felt the same way.

message 3074: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl Landmark (clandmark) | 861 comments Just finished up the Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull with Keys to the Demon Prison. It was an enjoyable children's adventure. Now, I'm about to finish the Green Rider series by starting to read The High King's Tomb.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I've been wanting to start both of those series, Cheryl!

message 3076: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (versusthesiren) | 357 comments I never read The Thief, but I DID read The Queen of Attolia when I was 12 or so and liked it a lot. I should really read the whole series one of these days.

Finally got through October Light and put Royal Assassin on the backburner. Now reading Fire by Kristin Cashore.

message 3077: by Danielle (new)

Danielle | 8 comments I am reading Between a Roc and a Hard Place by Danny Birt, just started, but I'm really looking forward to it!

message 3078: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I'm "reading" (actually listening as it's an audio) The Twelfth Imam from the library...have 2 Vince Flynn books waiting, from the library, along with The Unremembered (from the library). I just got the newest Preston/Child book Cold Vengeance (from the library). And today sent for 4 more books. from the library.

My own books have gone on a hunger strike.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) Valerie wrote: "Finally got through October Light and put Royal Assassin on the backburner. Now reading Fire by Kristin Cashore. "

Not enjoying RA?

message 3080: by Valerie (new)

Valerie (versusthesiren) | 357 comments Colleen of the Crawling Chaos wrote: "Not enjoying RA?"

It's just not what I'm in the mood for right now. I'll get back to it.

Just curious. I thought it was very slow, and there were multiple times I thought of putting it down and picking up something else.

message 3082: by Traci (new)

Traci Did you feel that way about Assassin's Apprentice? I was so bored at first I almost gave up. Now I'm glad I stuck with it but Robin Hobb is definitely slower than I'm used to.

message 3083: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon (last edited Aug 26, 2011 02:54PM) (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) I thought AA was a bit slow, but I thought it was much faster than RA. At least AA was introducing the characters and the world and everything. I felt like a lot of the stuff in RA was sort of rehashes, so it was slow AND there wasn't a lot of new stuff happening. It's also a couple hundred pages longer.

ETA: I also thought Ship of Magic was overlong and boring.

message 3084: by Traci (new)

Traci You haven't gotten to Assassin's Quest yet have you? Lol. Very slow start. But from the middle to end one of my favorite books.
I actually liked Liveship better than Farseer.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) No, no I haven't. I have it, I just haven't started it yet. Next month, though. I needed a break first.

message 3086: by Shelley (new)

Shelley (shelleylea) | 11 comments Slightly short of funds (again) I am re-reading my books. Just started "The Dark River" by john Twelve Hawks. Luckily can't remember the ending......

message 3087: by Michael (new)

Michael McClung (michaelmcclung) | 12 comments Well. I've given up on The Weight of Blood. But I ran across a book sale at Carrefour and picked up Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters and Retribution Falls for five bucks each :)

message 3088: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I was about to make a cryptic remark Shelly, but I shall refrain. Sorry. Hope you like it. I loved the first book and found the next two sliding down hill for my taste. Maybe you'll think differently.

message 3089: by Shelley (new)

Shelley (shelleylea) | 11 comments Yes, it's my age - memory has gone. Handy when re-reading books, but no good for anything else. What was I going to say.......?????

message 3090: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I'd answer, but having just come into the room, I'm trying to recall, why I'm here?????

Ah! Sense & Sensibility & Sea Monsters! It's a fun read and I enjoyed it but it's definitely weird. Have you read any other mash-ups? It's more "out there" than some of the others.

message 3094: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) Mike (the Paladin) wrote: "Computer?????? What's a "computer"?"

Mike, I have to ask if this is a Ghost Writer referance.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I'm assuming he was referring to my writing box which tells me things..... I make a human sacrifice to it fortnightly.

message 3097: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Finished The Pilo Family Circus. It's really very good for it's type of horror and writing style. I can appreciate when something is good even if I'm not into it at the moment. I think if you enjoy the writing style of Bentley Little, you will enjoy this book enormously. I'm currently into the writing style of the more fantastic Sci-Fi genre. Whether it's fantasy, sci-fi, or horror, they're related in that they all depict situations which are somewhat unreal. I don't think it's not that I'm not into horror, but some of the horror has a writing style that is not that appealing to me or has that much thought behind it but slash, gore, and weirdness. Or maybe I'm into books that uses words with a lot of syllables in them.

Maciek told me that Peter Straub is a terrific writer, in particular his book Shadowland. I'm going to read SciFi Aficionados' two September reads, The Day of the Triffids and Revelation Space, then it's a toss up between Shadowland and Neuromancer.

I'm currently reading Day of the Triffids.

I'm debating whether to write a review of The Blind Assassin. I like Oryx and Crake better.
