Aloha | 940 comments Okay, a big batch of hot chocolate is waiting for you! Maybe you'll bring the sunshine when you come here to shovel.

Got to love James Marsters, aka Spike from Buffy, ain't he the best, even though I have never heard any of the Butcher audio, only seen him on buffy, but loved his acting and character on there. There is a character that is more than meets the eye. I love characters that when we think we know them, they turn in another direction.

Can I have his?

Aloha | 940 comments Since I'm shoveling a lot of snow, I started converting eBooks into audios. I am loving this method since I'm now used to hearing my computer's Alex voice talking. I love making my own audiobooks!

ooooh! I also picked up the most recent release of Marion Zimmer Bradley's Sword And Sorceress XXV. I didn't even know it was due for a new release.

Dawn (breakofdawn) A chocolate bath? I'm in.

As long as it's dark chocolate.

message 560: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments I'll make it dark chocolate for you, Dawn. It's better for you, anyway.

Aren't you in the bath too? You're learning quite well, grasshopper.

Hmmm. Would that be chocolate covered grasshopper?

message 566: by [deleted user] (new)

*Shrugs* and I'm your opposite. I don't care for any kind of candy but I dig hot chocolate. Go figure.

message 567: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) Now I want some hot chocolate really bad. Thanks guys! :P

message 568: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments I don't like candy, except for chocolate. I am a chocolate junky. I swear that it's my biggest weakness.

Laura (booksbytheflame) I can't eat candy, like candy canes or mints. I've got braces on :(

However, melted and hot chocolate I can have. I love compromising :D

message 571: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Hey, Grant, ain't Glen Cook just the best. I also like him because he is from St. Louis, Missouri, where I grow up.

message 572: by [deleted user] (new)

Im a big fan of his Black Company series as well as his Garrett Files series. Most of the world prefers the Black Company (which I love) but I actually enjoy the Garrett Files more. I just picked up Surrender to the Will of the Night the 3rd book in Instrumentalities of the the Night and I've really been enjoying it and the series overall thus far

message 573: by Kevin (last edited Jan 28, 2011 06:42PM) (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Someone recommended me to read his books, especially the Chronicles of the Black Company, while I was looking around in the Sci Fic/Fantasy section of Barnes and Nobles on New Years last year, was bored one day, order the book from the library, got it in a in three days, finished it in three days, loved it. Only have read the Chronicles of the Black Company, really want to read Book of the South and Garrett Files, but can't find a copy. Not as many people read his work, maybe his is just not as well known as other.

message 574: by [deleted user] (new)

if you use an ereader I have all the Garrett Files in epub format. I'd be glad to share em with ya. I didn't know he was from St. Louis. I fly up there every other month to train new employees. Fun city.

message 575: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) I don't use a ereader sorry, nothing like holding a book. I did not know you could share books on ereaders. Plus I like his review on the cover of the older Storm Front. He knows what he is talking about, being one of the first. If I am bored again, I may go and get book one of the Garrett Files.

message 576: by [deleted user] (new)

If you like the Dresden Files then you should like the Garrett Files. I think Jim Butcher was definitely influenced by the Garrett Files. I agree there's nothing like holding a book but there's nothing more convenient than an ereader. And yes, you can share epub files across most formats of ereader.

message 577: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Glen Cook of the firsts in that genre.

message 578: by Kevin (last edited Jan 28, 2011 06:56PM) (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Glen Cook of the firsts in that genre. I also like that Robert Jordan's wife also edited the Chronicles of the Black Company as Brandon Sanderson mentioned in his last tour.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I can't really read anything scarier than the Wizard and Glass series. I tried a little King in HS, can't do it. :) I'm so nosey though! Everybody seems to read King but me. :(

message 580: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I wish I could give you some recommendations but I scare very easily. :)

message 581: by Becky (last edited Jan 29, 2011 07:22AM) (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) MrsJ, you could always do what Joey Tribbiani does and stick the book in the freezer when it gets too scary for you. ;)

I don't scare easily when I read. It's usually due to audio or visual stimuli rather than what I picture when I read. Creepy music and sound effects and scary images or movies affect me much more than what I read. The Exorcist movie still scares the bejeezus out of me (doesn't really stop me though. I'm a glutton for punishment), but when I read the book, it didn't frighten me at all.

I think that most of King's more recent books are more creepy and/or gory than horror. They have some good moments in them, but I don't feel like that's really the focus anymore.

You might try The Eyes of the Dragon if you've never read it. It was written for his young daughter when she complained that he never wrote anything that she could read, LOL. It's a fantasy quest type story. You might like that one. It also ties into the Dark Tower series as well.

Ooh, and The Talisman is another good one. :)

I'll stop now. Promise! ;)

message 582: by Felina (new)

Felina I'm like Becky and I think the only horror book that ever got under my skin was Heart-Shaped Box, World War Z and The Taking.

In my opinion:

King - Scary
Duma Key
The Shining
Misery (I guess, if psychos scare you. I only scare really with ghosts and demons)

King - Not Scary
Under the Dome
Rose Madder
The Gunslinger
The Drawing of the Three
Waste Lands
Wizard & Glass

Those are the only King's I've read...I think.

Becky, I'm glad you didn't think The Exorcist was scary to read. I'm going to try to read it for Horror Aficionados and I'm really scared cause the movie gave me a fright. I picked it up from the library yesterday and I'm uncomfortable even having it in my house.

message 583: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Oh yes, The Taking had a really good spot in it too. That's the only book I've ever had to set down because it creeped me out too much! LOL Unfortunately I thought that, in normal Koontz style, he bunked and the ending. Too bad.

message 584: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Felina, I'm not saying that The Exorcist book is more tame than the movie - it's not - but only that it didn't affect me the same way. The visuals of the movie just affect me more.

message 585: by Felina (new)

Felina Well I'm going to go with you saying The Exorcist is tamer than the movie so I can be mad at you if it isn't.

I liked the ending of The Taking. That book just straight up freaked me out from start to finish. I liked it more than Intensity which is the Koontz book everybody freaks out over. I think The Taking was just really good timing for me.

message 586: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) LOL Ok... you do that. It's not like you know where I li... oh crap. :P

message 590: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I think I've read the Eyes of the Dragon...was it about someone who had eye - holes in a dragon picture? If so, I remember reading that one, it was pretty good.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) MrsJoseph wrote: "I think I've read the Eyes of the Dragon...was it about someone who had eye - holes in a dragon picture? If so, I remember reading that one, it was pretty good."

Yep that's the one. :)

message 592: by Felina (new)

Felina I didn't find the movie that scary in general. It might be because I was with friends and there was wine involved and more than a prudent amount of giggling. However, in the night when I'm trying to sleep and I hear a weird sound I ALWAYS picture that stupid little girl at the side of my bed and I start silently freaking out cause I'm a baby. *sigh* I need to get a big burly man to sleep with me to alleviate some of the fear.

message 593: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay this is incredibly lame but I totally laughed out loud at the Friends reference. Totally miss that show

message 594: by Felina (new)

Felina Its not lame. Friends was hilarious.

message 595: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments I'm not sure whether I'll get to The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty . Almost done with The Store by Bentley Little . I'm really enjoying it. Instead of The Exorcist, I might read Hostage to the Devil The Possession and Exorcism of Five Contemporary Americans by Malachi Martin , which looks really interesting. Since I read The Exorcist years ago and saw the movie several times, I want to move onto new territory.

Still continuing with The City & The City by China Miéville audio.

message 596: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments I enjoyed Joe Hill's Horns by Joe Hill but thought Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill wasn't that original. It was eerily written, though. I still think his dad, Stephen King, was a better writer. Stephen King's earlier work, such as Carrie, has more power and originality.

Nicki wrote: "Ooh, I need to read Joe Hill's works at some point. I bought them (some of them, anyway? not sure if it was all of them) but they kinda got lost in the shuffle last year.

I never read The Exorcist..."

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I just finished The Riddler's Gift (Lifesong, #1) by Greg Hamerton . I really enjoyed the book. Highly recommend it.

message 598: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments Last night I started The Lies of Locke Lamora for our group read. So far, it's pretty good!

For those interested, the suggestion threads are now up for our March read.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Jason, I have some books for review to get through, but I hope I can start The Lies of Locke Lamora soon.

message 600: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I'm still reading The Lies of Locke Lamora, but now I've also picked up Winds of Fate. Damn you, Mercedes Lackey!!! LOL I'm a huge fan and I've been itching to buy this series in ebook. What kills me is Lackey's backlist is being priced as high as buying the pb copy. :( That sucks.
