Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Jason wrote: "I must have missed this, or I have a bad memory, but what is the pre-flight check?"

Jason, it didn't look like anyone answered your question. I think the ladies were referring to the check you do before you leave home to make sure you have everything. I got everything but my purse one day, and I found out when I got to the gas station, but had no money to buy gas. So back home I went. :)

Lady D is 100% right.

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments That would suck, Lady Danielle. I know, because I've gone grocery shopping before and forgotten my wallet. My wife is notorious for that for that as well. Always when we're grocery shopping for some reason...lol

Thanks, Lady Danielle!

Aww! It's kind of embarrassing when that happens, huh?

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments Very much so...lol

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 380 comments about to start Lies of Locke Lamora.

just finished World War Z. awesome.

message 707: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Mark, the audio for WWZ is awesome too. I generally hate abridgments, but the abridged-but-dramatized audio for WWZ is one of the best I've ever heard. If you haven't listened to it, you should. It's only 5 discs, but well worth the time. :)

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 380 comments its funny, i just simultaneously got another big thumbs up for the audio version in another group!

message 709: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) That's because it's great! Would I steer you wrong? ;) LOL

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments WWZ sounds very interesting...but I can't get past the zombies. Ok, I'm a wuss. ;0)

message 711: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments You wouldn't survive in the horror forum, Mrs. Joseph.

message 712: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Not a single second, lol. I read bits and peices of Christine and Carrie. Not my cup of tea. In fact, I read The Girl in the Box while in elem/middle school and I've never forgotten it. *shudder* I stopped watching Fringe after Oliva was locked in that pitch black room on the other side (and I really hate the current direction of the show so I never picked it up again).

message 713: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments The Horror genre has gotten more strange and blood-thirsty.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) MrsJoseph wrote: "WWZ sounds very interesting...but I can't get past the zombies. Ok, I'm a wuss. ;0)"

The zombies are... vicious and brutal and awesome, but the great thing about WWZ is the background stuff, the political and social and economic and militaristic atmosphere of the world after the zombie apocalypse. It's told in interview style, and the shifting perspectives had me hooked immediately. It's great. I loved it. :D

message 715: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) But I actually came in here to mention what I'm reading. I just started the audio for Stardust by Neil Gaiman and read by himself, and I'm only one disc in, but I really enjoy it so far.

I'm also still working on The Well of Ascension on my nook.

Now I just need a deadtree book to round off the format trifecta. LOL Probably The Tapestry Shop by Joyce Elson Moore which is my HF group read starting today. :)

message 716: by Christine (new)

Christine I'm reading The Iron Duke. I know a lot of you have read it already and loved it but I am having a hard time getting into it. I hope it gets better. I have a free day today so maybe I can love it too.

I bought that a few weeks ago but haven't started it yet! Tell me what you think!

message 718: by Christine (new)

Christine So far its ok. I'm only into it about 100 pages. So there is hope that it will get better. I'm having trouble getting settled in the author's steampunk world. Its cool but there are a lot of details to remember.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I'm still reading my current crop of public library books and audios... I tend to end up with 10 books at a time and 2 to 3 weeks to read them so my own books go on the back burner...

message 720: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Mike, arrange to have somebody take your owned books away from you if you don't read them by a certain time. That will make you read them. LOL

message 721: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Mainly reading The Fall of Hyperion (Hyperion, #2) by Dan Simmons . I'm also reading the gross and disturbing but well-written Cows by Matthew Stokoe . It's a quick read and easy to get into. Each chapter is only a few pages, so it's a good palate cleanser to The Fall of Hyperion. Another palate cleanser I'm reading for when I want fun romance is Dreams of a Dark Warrior (Immortals After Dark, #11) by Kresley Cole .

Christine Aloha wrote: "Mike, arrange to have somebody take your owned books away from you if you don't read them by a certain time. That will make you read them. LOL"

That sounds like cruel and unusual punishment. LOL

message 723: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments lol, I agree with Christine. I'd be a sad, sad girl if someone took my to be read owned books.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I'd lose my head and they'd get hurt... I sort of like a miser but with books. A "bookmiser".

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) I love the IAD series, Aloha!

message 726: by Aloha (new)

message 727: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments That's my favorite PNR series, Lady Di. What book are you up to in the series?

message 728: by MrsJoseph *grouchy*, *good karma* (new)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Aloha wrote: "I never realized how deathly serious people are about books until I joined Goodreads. LOL"

LOL! My friends used to get mad at me because I won't let them borrow books. I have some friends that can and others that are on the "NO!" list.

I also get really PO'd about spine cracking, dog ears, etc. I've gotten in a few arguements about book care - in college (after a while) they knew just not to ask.

message 729: by TinaNoir (new)

TinaNoir | 177 comments Well I have committed myself to reading straight through all five of Karen Marie Moning's Fever series. I am currently on book 2 Bloodfever. Wasn't crazy about the first book, but I am liking book 2 a lot more.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) Aloha, this is my fave too (although BDB is a close second, sometimes a tie). I still need to read PoaDP and DftD.

That is good to hear Tina-I read book 1 and did not care for it. I found Mac to be a little too 'Mary-Sueish' for my taste. Maybe i should give it a nother shot...

message 732: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Lady Di, BDB is another fav of mine, too.

Tina, I prefer Moning's Highlander series over the Fever series.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) That's cool, Aloha!

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments Wait, does this mean we all fail pre-K?

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments Luckily when I was in school, pre-K didn't exist. As a matter of fact, I didn't go to Kindergarten either, back in the dark ages we went right into first grade.

Oh, just starting The Lies of Locke Lamora.

TinaNoir | 177 comments Maggie wrote: "That is good to hear Tina-I read book 1 and did not care for it. I found Mac to be a little too 'Mary-Sueish' for my taste. Maybe i should give it a nother shot..."

It took me two whole months to read the first one. It is a 384 page book. By contrast it took me 4 days to read The Name of the Wind a 662 page book. People told me to just grit my teeth through the first one and that Mac gets better as the series goes on. I am already seeing improvement in her. I had to keep reminding myself that I'd have given up on quite a few good series if I had stopped at less than stellar first books. Some series don't hit their stride til book 3.

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I'm finishing up Mercedes Lackey's Mage Winds trilogy with Winds of Fury. I can't say its my favorite series, even by her. What I can say is it is the first Fantasy series that I ever read - so I have a soft spot for it and ML. :-)

After this one, I'm going to try to buckle down and finish up LoLL and see if I can squeeze in Monster Hunter International

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments Really like Monster Hunter International, really nice brain-candy.

Dawn (breakofdawn) I found a Dove peanut butter square thingy in my desk drawer... Mmmm, year-old-candy :)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I had a doctor's appointment today and my enjoyment of all good tasting food is ruined at least for a while. I must drink nothing but water and unsweetened tea and I might, possibly have a small chance of survival.... Shall I go on? He seems rather gloomy..... He also asked about my moods. What does he expect after I get his take on life? Sheesh! Unsweetened tea and vegetable broth soup...without bread or crackers. Something to look forward to.

Oh, he did say if I lost 40 pounds I might have a small chance of survival. Happily I
have already started more exercise, so who knows, there may be a slight chance for me...just you know, a flicker.

message 746: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments I've been on a cannibal's diet and I have a clean bill of health from my doctor. The next time I make people stew, I'll send it your way, Mike.

Gosh, your doc really knows how to shine a light at the end of the tunnel, doesn't he? Did you ask about his moods?

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments You know that light, the one that turns out to an approaching train....

message 749: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments The doctor must be from the old school, where they scare you in order to make you work on your health, instead of giving you positive reinforcement.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments Actually i like the man, he's been my doctor for years but that's his modus operandi. He pretty much twisted my arm into cholesterol medicine even though I'm borderline (228)... he used the "it's better to start before the heart attack or stroke." and "a heart attack that kills you isn't so bad, but to live through a stroke, that's not good." Guy's a real ray of sunshine at times, but I know he's trying to do what's "best"...sigh. Oh well, as I said, started an exercise program already. maybe I'll...survive. :)
