Aloha | 940 comments I spent my high school years in Florida. Is that considered the south?

message 505: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Hey, stop making this into talking about weather, get back on topic, what book are people reading out there.

message 506: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Why don't you put in what you're reading, Kevin.

message 507: by [deleted user] (new)

I live right on the Arkansas/Louisiana border, MrsJoseph. Where did you live in the South?

People skills, Kevin. Develop people skills. Just to make you happy, Kev, I'm reading The Spy Who Haunted Me, Surrender to the Will of the Night, Monster Hunter International, A Fortress of Grey Ice and The Journey: Living by Faith in an Uncertain World.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Chris wrote: "Yeah? Very cool.....I like subtle..."

Yep. That's Kevin... Instantly making friends everywhere he goes.

message 513: by [deleted user] (new)

Yall know him?

message 514: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Well, Kevin's kind of infamous. We first encountered him making the rounds in about three different Fantasy groups demanding people explain just what was so great about The Name of the Wind and then getting all offended and belligerent when they did, or when they had the audacity to ask him why, despite his 4-star rating, he claims to dislike it so much, among other things.

He's quite the character. :)

message 515: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) Oh god, are you serious? Why does Kevin show up in every group I run away to? Can't a girl get some peace?

message 516: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) What is wrong with you all, getting mad at me at even turn. Becky, you got mad at me for being off topic about another series for a post or 2, but when it is about the weather, which not even books, and it goes on for more than 5 or 6 posts, then it would be okay then? The double standard comes out.

message 517: by Chris (new)

Chris Haught (haughtc) I'm not mad. Who's mad?

message 518: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Becky, I am not trying to call you out, but I guess we are can be hypocritical one time or another. It is after all human nature.

message 519: by Dawn (last edited Jan 28, 2011 05:17PM) (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) First of all.. Becky is a moderator in the group in question, and she didn't get mad at you, she mentioned to everyone that a new thread should be created to continue the conversation. Very politely mentioned. To everyone.

Second of all... You are not a moderator in this group. If they have a problem with it being off topic, they would say so and then we'd all move it along to somewhere more appropriate. Without arguing about it.

Third of all. Gah!

message 520: by [deleted user] (last edited Jan 28, 2011 05:26PM) (new)

*shrugs* I'm not a moderator but I'll flat out tell you I love this group cause everyone is good folks. I've no desire to have any douchebags in the mix. Get a moderator to kick his ass out if he acts like an ass. Lady Danielle is from Texas. I've no doubt she's got the backbone to remove a disruptive influence.

message 521: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments I'm a moderator for a PNR group. Based on group dynamics, it's best to let the moderator do the moderating. When people start bossing other people around, you have huge problems. The best thing to do when the conversation is not flowing the way you want it to or you have no interest is to stay polite and quiet. The conversation will eventually turn back another way. But disrupting a flow of conversation is the worst thing you can do. All it does is create a lot of animosity.

message 522: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) I just love how he joined the group today, didn't even bother to introduce himself, and then immediately came in here to bring up a personal beef. Very tasteful!

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Kevin wrote: "Becky, you got mad at me for being off topic about another series for a post or 2, but when it is about the weather, which not even books..."

I got annoyed when you started arguing with me, Kevin, not because you posted an off-topic comment or two. But, Dawn explained it perfectly, so I'll leave it at that.

So what are you reading, then?

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Dawn wrote: "I just love how he joined the group today, didn't even bother to introduce himself, and then immediately came in here to bring up a personal beef. Very tasteful!"

I really don't introduce myself, just in the Stephen King group. On another note, did you not reply because of me?

I am reading Downbelow Station, I'm just not liking the double standard going that it around. I guess different mods are different.

Dawn (breakofdawn) Kevin wrote: "I really don't introduce myself, just in the Stephen King group. On another note, did you not reply because of me?"

I have no idea what your second sentence was supposed to mean, but that's nothing new. My point was that your first post, within minutes of joining, was to reprimand for being off topic. If you don't see why that's a little silly, then you're the only one...

message 527: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Dawn wrote: "First of all.. Becky is a moderator in the group in question, and she didn't get mad at you, she mentioned to everyone that a new thread should be created to continue the conversation. Very politel..."

Hey then how come I am not mad at Chris anymore or at all, just you, and a little bit annoyed at Becky?

message 528: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) Because Chris is a ninja :)

message 529: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Kevin, it has nothing to do with double standards, but how you come in attacking people. You'll make more friends if you stop coming in and attack people.

message 530: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) Aloha wrote: "Kevin, it has nothing to do with double standards, but how you come in attacking people. You'll make more friends if you stop coming in and attack people."

Sorry to do it here, long story that I should have not started here at all. Its not that I am trying to attack people, its something that I have going with Dawn not really seeing eye to eye on the same topics and then dismissing the others point totally.

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments Aloha's idea on moderating a group when you are not a moderator are pretty much the way I go about it when I'm not the moderator of a group. Well said, Aloha!

As moderator of this group, I don't mind if the subject within a thread goes a little off topic. They usually do, and likewise, they always come back to the main focus of the thread.

As for the rules, they are simple. Respect one another, even in your arguments. That means no mean spirited insults. Even if you are right. That's what PMs are for.

Aloha | 940 comments Okay, Kevin. So...how's the weather in MO?

message 536: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) For the record everyone, it has nothing to do with me. I tend to ignore all comments he makes in all groups, lest I let him get under my skin, as I have today. Sorry for this side track!

Thinking I'm too demanding?

message 538: by Laura (new)

Laura (booksbytheflame) It doesn't give a very good first impression when you start to attack people. Also, it gets you nowhere. All you had to do was put up what book you were reading and the conversation would have picked up.

Besides, I find the weather quite fascinating. Us Australians are in the middle of a heat wave :)

message 539: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Aloha wrote: "Okay, Kevin. So...how's the weather in MO?"

Calm, nice and average for this time of year.

Sorry, did not realize that weather is big of a thing, maybe because I from the mid-west where we can handle any type of weather. Also sorry on trying to break up the nice weather talk.

message 542: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments We probably have your snow. Darn it!

And for you, Kevin, I'm in the middle of reading The Store by Bentley Little . I'm really enjoying it. Great commentary on corporations controlling the masses with their products and political/economic control.

I might take you up on that. :)

message 544: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) Speaking of the weather, I just got State of Fear by Michael Crichton, thinking of reading it next in part of this discussion, in part I one on one with Michael on global warming.

message 545: by Aloha (new)

Aloha | 940 comments Kevin, if you were like me and constantly shoveling snow, you would be thinking about the weather, too. Maybe you can fly over and shovel for me, and I promise not to think of the weather so much. I'd even make you a nice cup of homemade hot chocolate.

message 546: by Laura (new)

Laura (booksbytheflame) I'll shovel snow if hot chocolate is involved *thumbs up*

message 547: by Jason (new)

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments I know how Aloha feels. We got hit really hard about a month and a half ago. We were out there shovelling knee to waist-high snow every day for a week.

Not to be mean or anything, but I can't stand chocolate favored drinks. Second, I feel your pain, my parents lives in New Jersey, got just as much snow as you did. I was back for Christmas and felt the snow, and shoveling.

message 549: by Laura (new)

Laura (booksbytheflame) I used to live in England so I know all about the snow shoveling. Moved to Australia and I haven't seen a snow flake in 7 years!

Jason (darkfiction) | 3204 comments I'm still trucking through the H.P. Lovecraft biography. I am loving it. It is one of those books I don't want to end.

I'm also reading a lot of Lovecraft's fiction together with the biography. While at work, after I've recovered from my operation, I'll soon be listening to Fool Moon on my iPod.
